The uptake of germanium(Ge) by health foodstuffs was interesting because of a therapeutic effect of organic germanium. Germanium contents in different plant parts of the cultivated Korean Angelica keiskej Koidz in several growing districts were determined by square wave anodic stripping voltammetry. Experimental conditions in germanium determination from Angelica kejskej Koidz were as follows : deposition time; 20 sec, deposition potential; -0.9 volts vs Ag/AgCl, and frequency; 100 Hz in 0.1M\;HClO_4, supporting electrolyte solution at pH 2.43 containing $1.5\;{\times}\;10^5\;M$ pyrocatechol violet. Calibration curve showed a good lineality in the range of 0.4 ppb to 2.0 ppm and the detection limit was 0.08 ppb. There was a large difference in content according to growing districts ranging from 102 to 386ppm. Germanium content in leaf parts was much higher than that in stems.
This study investigated the effects of Angelica keiskei Koidzumi and turmeric extract supplementation(ATE) on blood lipids, antioxidant and inflammatory markers in 35 hypercholesterolemic Korean adults with high blood cholesterol levels (serum total cholesterol$\geq200mg/d{\ell}$ or LDL-cholesterol$\geq130mg/d{\ell}$). They received ATE(n=21, 14 females and 7 males) or placebo(control group, n=14, 11 females and 3 males) for 4 weeks. There was no significant change in serum total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol levels after ATE supplementation in the both groups. However, the LDLcholesterol: HDL-cholesterol ratio(LPH) was significantly decreased and both serum prostagrandin E2(PGE2) levels were significantly decreased in those receiving ATE. No significant changes were evident in interleukin(IL)-$1\beta$, IL-6, IL-8, 8-isoprostane, malondialehyde, total antioxidant capacity and oxidized-LDL. These results suggest that complex extract of Angelica keiske and turmeric has the potential to decrease cardiovascular risk by reducing LPH and inflammatory mediator $PGE_2$ in hypercholesterolemic adults.
The objectives of the present study were to investigate the protective effects of Angelica keiskei juice and Oenanthe javanica juice against oxidative damage in LLC-$PK_1$ renal epithelial cells and to evaluate their free radical-scavenging activities. Both A. keiskei juice and O. javanica juice showed a strong in vitro antioxidant activities such as ${\alpha}$, ${\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), nitric oxide (NO), $O_2{^-}$, and ${\cdot}OH$ radical-scavenging activities. The LLC-$PK_1$ cells showed significant lipid peroxidation and cell death due to oxidative stress when it was induced by 2, 2'-azobis (2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH), sodium nitroprusside (SNP), pyrogallol, and 3-morpholinosydnonimine (SIN-1). Treatment with both A. keiskei juice and O. javanica juice significantly increased cell viability and inhibited lipid peroxidation. These results suggest that A. keiskei juice and O. javanica juice are potential natural antioxidants.
Angelica keiskei has exhibited numerous pharmacological effects including antitumor, antimetastatic, and antidiabetic effects. However, the anti-inflammatory effects and mechanisms employed by xanthoangelol E isolated from Angelica keiskei are incompletely understood. In this study, we attempted to determine the effects of Xanthoangelol E on the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated mouse peritoneal macrophage. The findings of this study demonstrated that xanthoangelol E inhibited the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-${\alpha}$, interleukin (IL)-6, and prostaglandin $E_2$ ($PGE_2$). Xanthoangelol E inhibited the enhanced levels of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) caused by LPS. Additionally, we showed that the anti-inflammatory effect of xanthoangelol E is through the regulation of the activation of nuclear factor (NF)-${\kappa}B$ and caspase-1. These results provide novel insights into the pharmacological actions of xanthoangelol E as a potential candidate for the development of new drugs to treat inflammatory diseases.

It has been suggested that green juice supplementation may have some health promoting benefits. We evaluated the effects of green juice (Angelica keiskei) consumption on parameters of lipid profiles and plasma antioxidant status in healthy male smokers. Fifty-four smokers were supplemented with 300 ml of green juice for 6 weeks while maintaining their normal diet. Blood samples were collected on week 0 and week 6 in order to evaluate plasma lipid profiles (total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol) , plasma antioxidant vitamin levels (ascorbic acid, $\alpha$ -tocopherol, ${\gamma}$ -tocopherol, $\alpha$ -carotene, $\beta$ -carotene, cryptoxanthin and lycopene) , the degree of LDL oxidation and GOT, GPT levels for liver function. Plasma ascorbic acid level remained at the same level. However, $\alpha$ -tocopherol and ${\gamma}$ -tocopherol normalized by total cholesterol (p <0.05) and $\beta$ -carotene (p <0.001) level were all significantly increased after green juice supplementation. Plasma cholesterol was reduced for 12%, LDL-cholesterol was reduced for 9.3% after green juice consumption, while plasma triglyceride and HDL-cholesterol was not changed. Oxidized LDL assessed by conjugated diene (CD) , was decreased (p < 0.0001) after green juice consumption. These results further support a role for green juice supplementation in the improvement of lipid status, prevention of lipid peroxidation, and thereby reducing risk factors of numerous diseases associated with elevated oxidative stress in smokers.
This study was performed to examine the feeding effects of $Angelica$$keiskei$$Koidz$ (AK) and its processed products on serum, liver, and body fat content and the expression of antioxidant genes in rats fed a high fat diet. AK and its processed products were added at 3-5% to a high fat diet and fed to adult rats for 6 weeks. In experiment 1 (EXP 1), the rats were fed with one of six diets including a control diet (normal fat), high fat diet (HF), and HF + AK additives groups (four groups). In experiment 2 (EXP 2), the rats were separated into three groups of HF, HF + AK whole leaves, and HF + fermented juice (FS) + squeeze (SA). Body weight was not different among the groups in either experiment. The liver weight was lower in the FS and SA groups compared to that in the other groups (P<0.05). Serum luteolin was higher in the AK and processed products groups compared to that in the HF group (P<0.05). Gene expression of the antioxidative enzymes catalase and glutathione-s-reductase in the liver was higher in the AK processed products group than that in the other groups (P<0.05). The results suggest that the intake of AK and its processed products increased the expression of antioxidant enzymes in animals fed a high fat diet, reduced hepatic cholesterol content, and increased the effective absorption of luteolin.

This study was undertaken to analyze proximate compositions, minerals, vitamins, amino acids and fatty acids of Angelica keiskei Koidz. The contents of raw leaf and stem juice were compared with those of aerial whole plant. The aerial whole plant was relatively rich in crude fiber. The leaf juice was rich in lipid, protein, minerals, vitamins and amino acids whereas the stem juice was rich only in sugar and some kinds of fatty acids.
Effects of high hydrostatic pressure on microorganisms and browning enzymes in Angelica keiskei juice were investigated using response surface methodology. The optimum process condition for maximum reduction of total aerobes was $5700\;kg_f/cm^2$ (558.6 MPa) pressure and 7.16 min process time, and 3.44 log cycle reduction of total aerobes was predicted at the optimum condition. E. coli, initially $8.8{\times}10^3\;CFU/ml$, was completely inactivated by high hydrostatic pressure at all process conditions ($3800{\sim}6700\;kg_f/cm^2\;pressure;\;3{\sim}17\;min\;process\;time$). Polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase were partly inactivated by the high hydrostatic pressure. It was also indicated that inactivation of microorganisms and browning enzymes by hydrostatic pressure is dependent on pressure rather than process time.
