The study was performed to recognize the most preferable spectral chennels for discriminating geological materials using the portable radiometer. The portable radiometer covers the visible and short infrared regions from approximately 0.4 to 2.5 microns which are coincided with Landsat TM, and the rock samples used for the study are pyrophylites, andesites, granite, granodiorite and silicified sedimentary rocks which are collected in Yangsan-Dongrae fault area. The analysis of the rock sample provides a preliminary basis for determining the wavelength regions showing diagnostic spectral features and for discriminating hydrothermal altered rocks from the unaltered rocks. The measurement of spectral of spectral reflectance for the rock samples was carried out in the laboratory which environment condition such as temperature, light sources, and humidity are constant. The analysis of the measured data was based on correlation between the reflectance value of the rock samples, and the follow discriptions are output of the study. 1) Pyrophyllite shows absorption at 0.83 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to the oxidation of pyrite, and absorption at 2.22 $\mu\textrm{m}$ due to OH. 2) The altered rocks have generally higher reflectance than the unaltered rocks. 3) The ratio mesurement of pyrophyllites shows strong absorption at band 5/6 and band 6/4(in Landsat TM 5/7, 7/4). The ratio 1/5(Landsat TM 1/5) may be useful to discriminate andesite from the granite.
Mining activities focus on the production of mineral resources for energy generation and raw material requirements worldwide and it is a known fact that shallow reserves become scarce. For this reason, exploration of new resources proceeds consistently to meet the increasing energy and raw material demand of industrial activities. Rock mechanics has a vital role in underground mining and surface mining. Devices and instruments used in laboratory testing to determine rock mechanics related parameters might have limited sensing capability of the failure behavior. However, methodologies such as, thermal cameras, digital speckle correlation method and acoustic emission might enable to investigate the initial crack formation in detail. Regarding this, in this study, thermographic analysis was performed to analyze the failure behaviors of different types of rock specimens during uniaxial compressive strength experiments. The energy dissipation profiles of different types of rocks were characterized by the temperature difference recorded with an infrared thermal camera during experiments. The temperature increase at the failure moment was detected as 4.45℃ and 9.58℃ for andesite and gneiss-schist specimens, respectively. Higher temperature increase was observed with respect to higher UCS value. Besides, a temperature decreases of about 0.5-0.6℃ was recorded during the experiments of the marble specimens. The temperature change on the specimen is related to release of radiation energy. As a result of the porosity tests, it was observed that increase in the porosity rate from 5.65% to 20.97% can be associated to higher radiation energy released, from 12.68 kJ to 297.18 kJ.

A number of alunite and pyrophyllite deposits occur around the Haenam area where Cretaceous volcanic and volcanogenic sediments are widely distributed. The K-Ar ages of alunite, sericite and whole rocks collected from alunite and pyrophyllite deposits and unaltered rocks representing various stratigraphic horizon of the area were determined and their formation stage was discussed. The ages of volcanic rocks range between $68.6{\pm}1.9$ and $94.1{\pm}2.0$ Ma corresponding to Cenomanian-Maastrichtian of upper Cretaceous. Andesitic rock gives $94.1{\pm}2.0$. Rhyolite and acidic tuffs give $79.47{\pm}1.7$ and $82.8{\pm}1.2$ Ma corresponding to Campanian. The later stage andesite gives $68.6{\pm}1.9$ Ma of Maastrichtian. The results suggest that volcanism of the area can be devided into three different stages. The ages of alunite and sericite range $71.8{\pm}2.8$ to $76.6{\pm}2.9$ Ma of late Campanian to early Maastrichtian which is rather earlier than the age of granite(67 Ma). It indicates that the alteration ages of these clay mineral deposits appeared to be related with its volcanism rather than the hydrothermal stage of granite of this area.
Diverse microtextures and secondary minerals formed by chemical weathering were observed in the glacial debris of King George Island. Weathering rind was observed in the block of basaltic andesite tuff due to dissolution of calcite producing voids. Eolian volcanic glass altered to mixtrure of allophane-like materials and iron oxyhydroxides at grain edges with relative concentration of Al. Fe, and Ti. Biotite in granodiorite area was transfarmed to vermiculite and interstratified biotite-vermiculite or very rarely to kaolinite and gibbsite. Pyrite in the hydrothermal alteration zone was repalced by iron oxides, resulting in sulfuric acid which locally accelerated alteration of chlorite to expandable clay minerals. Weathering of plagiociase and K-feldspar was negligible. Although glacial debris of the Barton Peninsula has undergone weak chemical weathering with formation of some secondary minerals, massive formation of smectite, abundant in nearby marine sediments, didn't occur.
This report deals with the sedimentological study of the littoral sand of beaches in the Busan area. The purpose of this report is to know the grain size, mineralogical composition, heavy mineral and clay mineral of the beach sands, and gravity measurements of the Nagdong River Deltas. 1) As a whole, the littoral sand of the beaches are composed of uniformly medium grained, moderately sorted and nearly symmetrical. The barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary is composed of fine grained, well sorted and nearly symmetrical. 2) The littoral sand of the beaches is transported by saltation and rolling. The barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary is transported by suspension and saltation. 3) In the littoral sand of the beaches, the ratio of feldspar to quartz is 1 :2.31 and in the barrier sand of the Nagdong Estuary 1:1.40. 4) The content of heavy mineral of samples ranges from 0.54 to 3.87 %. The principal heavy minerals are hornblende, pyroxene, epidote, garnet, leucoxene, zircon, apatite, magnetite, hematite and ilmenite with minor accessories of rutile and olivine. 5) The x-ray diffraction analysis of the clay mineral informs the existence of quartz, feldspar, kaolinite and montmorillonite. The montmorillonite is considered to have been derived from the alteration of acidic volcanic rocks. 6) To determine the depositional structure of the Nagdong Estuary, Gravity measurements were made. Free air anomaly ranges from 14.5 mgal to 33.5 mgal and Bouguer anomaly ranges from 14.3 to 23.5 mgal and both are closely related to the topography. According to the interpreted layer structure, the upper layer composing sand, silt and clay, the intermediate layer composing sand with gravel, the lower layer composing weathered and soft rock, and bed rock composing hornfels or andesite. 7) The depositional environments of the study, the littoral area is dominated by the marine environment and the Nagdong Estuary by the mixed environment.
PURPOSES : It is difficult to estimate tunnel stability because of lack of timely information during tunnel excavation. Tunnel deformability refers to the capacity of rock to strain under applied loads or unloads during tunnel excavation. This study was conducted to analyze a methods of pre-evaluation of stability during tunnel construction using the critical strain concept, which is applied to the results of tunnel settlement data and unconfined compression strength of intact rock or rock mass at the tunnel construction site. METHODS : Based on the critical strain concept, the pre-evaluation of stability of a tunnel was performed in the Daegu region, at a tunnel through andesite and granite rock. The critical strain concept is a method of predicting tunnel behavior from tunnel crown settlement data using the critical strain chart that is obtained from the relationship between strain and the unconfined compression strength of intact rock in a laboratory. RESULTS : In a pre-evaluation of stability of a tunnel, only actually measured crown settlement data is plotted on the lower position of the critical strain chart, to be compared with the total displacement of crown settlement, including precedent settlement and displacement data from before the settlement measurement. However, both cases show almost the same tunnel behavior. In an evaluation using rock mass instead of intact rock, the data for the rock mass strength is plotted on the lower portion of the critical strain chart, as a way to compare to the data for intact rock strength. CONCLUSIONS : From the results of the pre-evaluation of stability of the tunnel using the critical strain chart, we reaffirmed that it is possible to promptly evaluate the stability of a tunnel under construction. Moreover, this research shows that a safety evaluation using the actual instrumented crown settlement data with the unconfined compression strength of intact rock, rather than with the unconfined compression strength of a rock mass in the tunnel working face, is more conservative.
Petrological studies were performed on the Sanbangsan lava dome, located in the southwest of Jeju Island Volcanic Field. According to the lava ejection method, it is 'an internal primitive form' that is gradually pushed up and expanded by continuous magma injection from the bottom to the top of the vent and it corresponds to the 'low lava dome'. The rocks are partly plotted in the field of benmoreite, but mostly plotted in the field of trachyte of the Cox et al.(1979) classification diagram, and also mainly plotted in the field of trachyte of Le Maitre et al.(2002) and Zr/TiO2-Nb/Y classification diagram. Therefore, the expression that described the rock of Sanbangsan lava dome as 'trachy-andesite' should be corrected to 'trachyte'. The volcanic rocks that consists in the Sanbangsan lava dome are trachyte containing normative quartz and shows differentiation trend in the range of 59.75-63.46 wt.% SiO2.
We investigated the distribution and geomorphic development of alluvial fans at Cheongdo- and Hweyang-eup(town) in the Cheongdo Basin, Gyeongsangbuk-do(Province) of Korea. The alluvial fans of study area are formed confluently to the E-W direction at the northern slope of the Mt. Namsan(840 m). They are classified into Higher surface, Middle surface, and Lower surface according to a relative height to a river bed. And the older alluvial fan is, the deeper gravel in the stream deposits is weathered. The magnitude of each surface composing of confluent fans is related to that of the drainage basin. So called fan-basin system of magnitude on the study area is on the positive(+) relation in the study area. The large fans over 1km in radius are found on the basin of andesite rock which is resistant to the weathering and erosion. Moreover there is no tectonic movement in the basin. It means the most important element influenced on the fan formation is not tectonic movement, but the Quaternary climatic change, which is the periglacial climate alternating glacial and interglacial stages during the Quaternary. Therefore alluvial fans would distribute in Korea overall influenced by the Quaternary climatic change.
A new approach of estimating the coefficient of permeability (COP) from resistivity has been developed, which can provide another good application tool of geophysical methods to geo-technical field. Borehole electrical logging and Lugeon test results in Yangsan area showed that resistivity is inversely proportional to the COP. For granite and andesite in Yansan area, the relation between the resistivity ($\rho$) and the COP (k) revealed that, $log(k){\approx}-0.85621\;log({\rho})+0.0031$. Derived relation is applied to AMT data acquired from a survey line along the tunnel. Two-dimensional resistivity distribution from AMT data was converted to two-dimensional COP section. The final COP section can be used as good input data for groundwater modeling.
The study focused on the petrology and petrochemistry of the so called "Ganghwa syenitic rocks" which intruded into metasediment of basement in southeastern part of Ganghwa Island. The geologic sequence of the mapped area was shown in table 1, 10 model analyses and 7 chemical analyses on the rock samples taken from the Ganghwa syenitic rocks and Manisan granite have been used to discuss the nomenclature of the rocks and petrological relationship between rock types. The petrograpical and petrochemical features based on, the analyses are as follows: 1) Ganghwa syenitic rocks consist of Ganghwa alkali syenite and Ganghwa diorite porphyry which based on the classification of the subcommision on systematics of igneous of IGUS. Ganghwa diorite porphyry which occured as dike forms are intruded into Ganghwa alkali syenite. The rock forming minerals of Ganghwa alkali syenite are composed of perthite, plagioclase, quartz, hornblend and chlorite in major, and zircon, apatite, sericite and magnetite in minor. Ganghwa diorite porphyries consist of plagioclase, biotite, hornblend, orthoclase and chlorite, with, porphyritic texture. 2) In silica-oxides variation (Fig. 2) and AMF diagram (Fig_ 3), the Ganghwa alkali syenite is similar to the trend of Daly's average basalt-andesite-dacite-rhyolite than Skaergaard which shows the trend of the fractional crystallization of magma, and equivalent to the alkali rock series by Peacock. 3) The general trend of data points shift to plagioclase, and are superimposed on the alkali rich terminal part of the granodiorite province of SW Finland in normative Q-Kf-Pl(Fig. 4) and Or-Ab-An diagram respectively. The above-mentioned evidences suggested that the Ganghwa syenitic rocks are the differential products resulted by assimilation of intermediated magma and metasedment rock under relatively rapid cooling condition.
