In delay tolerant networks (DTNs), delay is inevitable; thus, making better use of buffer space to maximize the packet delivery rate is more important than delay reduction. In DTNs, epidemic routing is a well-known routing protocol. However, epidemic routing is very sensitive to buffer size. Once the buffer size in nodes is insufficient, the performance of epidemic routing will be drastically reduced. In this paper, we propose a buffer scheme to optimize the performance of epidemic routing on the basis of the Lagrangian and dual problem models. By using the proposed optimal buffer scheme, the packet delivery rate in epidemic routing is considerably improved. Our simulation results show that epidemic routing with the proposed optimal buffer scheme outperforms the original epidemic routing in terms of packet delivery rate and average end-to-end delay. It is worth noting that the improved epidemic routing needs much less buffer size compared to that of the original epidemic routing for ensuring the same packet delivery rate. In particular, even though the buffer size is very small (e.g., 50), the packet delivery rate in epidemic routing with the proposed optimal buffer scheme is still 95.8%, which can satisfy general communication demand.

The application of efficient constraint handling technique is fundamental method to find better solutions in engineering optimization problems with constraints. In this research four of constraint handling techniques are used with a meta-heuristic optimization method, harmony search algorithm, and the efficiency of algorithm is evaluated. The sample problem for evaluation of effectiveness is one of the typical discrete problems, optimal pipe size design problem of water distribution system. The result shows the suggested constraint handling technique derives better solutions than classical constraint handling technique with penalty function. Especially, the case of ${\varepsilon}$-constrained method derives solutions with efficiency and stability. This technique is meaningful method for improvement of harmony search algorithm without the need for development of new algorithm. In addition, the applicability of suggested method for large scale engineering optimization problems is verified with application of constraint handling technique to big size problem has over 400 of decision variables.

The purpose of this study is to improve convergence speed of topology optimization procedure using the existing ESO method and to deal with topology decision of the truss structures according to a boundary condition, such as cantilever type. At the existing ESO topology optimization procedure for the truss structures, the adjustment of member sizes according to target stress has been executed by increasing or reducing a very small value from each member size. In this case, it takes too much iteration till convergence. Accordingly, it is practically hard to obtain optimum topology for a large scale structures. For that reason, it is necessary to improve convergence speed of ESO method more effectively. During the topology decision procedure, member sizes are adjusted by calculating approximate solution for member sizes corresponding to the target stress at every step, the new member sizes are adjusted by such method are applied in FEA procedure of next step.

In this study, the lightweight modular design of hybrid railway carbody structures made of sandwich composites and aluminum extrusions was investigated by using topology and size optimization techniques. The topology optimum design was used to select the best material for parts of the carbody structure at the initial design stage, and then, the size optimum design was used to find the optimal design parameters of hybrid carbody structures using first-order and sub-problem methods. Through the topology optimization analysis, it was found that aluminum extrusions were suitable for primary members such as the underframe and lower side panel module to improve the stiffness and manufacturability of the carbody structures, and sandwich composites were appropriate for secondary members such as the roof and middle side panel module to minimize its weight. Furthermore, the results obtained by size optimization analysis showed that the weight of hybrid carbody structures composed of aluminum extrusions and sandwich composites could be reduced by a maximum of approximately 17.7% in comparison with carbody structures made of only sandwich composites.

Binary manipulators have recently received much attention due to hyper-redundancy, light weight, good controllability and high reliability. The precise positioning of the manipulator end-effecter requires the use of many modules, which results in a high-dimensional workspace. When the workspace dimension is large, existing inverse kinematics methods such as the Ebert-Uphoff algorithm may require impractically large memory size in determining the binary positions of all actuators. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new inverse kinematics algorithm: the inverse kinematics problem is formulated as an optimization problem using real-valued design variables, The key procedure in this approach is to transform the integer-variable optimization problem to a real-variable optimization problem and to push the real-valued design variables as closely as possible to the permissible binary values. Since the actual optimization is performed in real-valued design variables, the design sensitivity becomes readily available, and the optimization method becomes extremely efficient. Because the proposed formulation is quite general, other design considerations such as operation power minimization can be easily considered.
An efficient and high-fidelity design approach for wing-body shape optimization is presented. Depending on the size of design space and the number of design of variable, aerodynamic shape optimization process is carried out via different optimization strategies at each design stage. In the first stage, global optimization techniques are applied to planform design with a few geometric design variables. In the second stage, local optimization techniques are used for wing surface design with a lot of design variables to maintain a sufficient design space with a high DOF (Degree of Freedom) geometric change. For global optimization, Kriging method in conjunction with Genetic Algorithm (GA) is used. Asearching algorithm of EI (Expected Improvement) points is introduced to enhance the quality of global optimization for the wing-planform design. For local optimization, a discrete adjoint method is adopted. By the successive combination of global and local optimization techniques, drag minimization is performed for a multi-body aircraft configuration while maintaining the baseline lift and the wing weight at the same time. Through the design process, performances of the test models are remarkably improved in comparison with the single stage design approach. The performance of the proposed design framework including wing planform design variables can be efficiently evaluated by the drag decomposition method, which can examine the improvement of various drag components, such as induced drag, wave drag, viscous drag and profile drag.

Due to the global environment problems and the consumer's need for higher vehicle performance, it becomes very important for the global car makers to reduce vehicle weight. To reduce vehicle weight, many car makers have tried to use lightweight materials, for example, aluminum, magnesium, and plastics, for the vehicle structures and components. Especially, the ASF(aluminum space frame) is known for the excellent concept of the vehicle to satisfy structural rigidity, safety performance and weight reduction. In this research, the design of experiments and the multi-disciplinary optimization technique were utilized to meet the weight and structural rigidity target of the ASF. For the structural performance of the ASF, the locations and the size of aluminum extruded frames, aluminum cast nodes, and the aluminum sheets were optimized. As a result, the optimization design procedure has been set up to meet both structural and weight target of the ASF, and the assembled ASF showed good structural performance and weight reduction.
The increasing size and complexity of deep neural networks (DNNs) necessitate the development of efficient high-performance accelerators. An efficient memory structure and operating scheme provide an intuitive solution for high-performance accelerators along with dataflow control. Furthermore, the processing of various neural networks (NNs) requires a flexible memory architecture, programmable control scheme, and automated optimizations. We first propose an efficient architecture with flexibility while operating at a high frequency despite the large memory and PE-array sizes. We then improve the efficiency and usability of our architecture by automating the optimization algorithm. The experimental results show that the architecture increases the data reuse; a diagonal write path improves the performance by 1.44× on average across a wide range of NNs. The automated optimizations significantly enhance the performance from 3.8× to 14.79× and further provide usability. Therefore, automating the optimization as well as designing an efficient architecture is critical to realizing high-performance DNN accelerators.

In this study, a fully active transfemoral prothesis with a knee joint is designed considering stair walking conditions. Since the torque at the knee joint required for stair walking condition is relative high compared with the one in normal walking condition, the proposed design has high torque generating mechanism. Moreover, the transfemoral prothesis is designed in compact size to reduce its weight, which is related to comfortable fit and fatigue of patients. Flat type BLDC motor is used for simple and compact structure and various components are used to generate required torque with target working angle and speed. The weight reduction of structure is carried out using optimization method after the initial design process is complete. The optimization is conducted under the load conditions of stair walking. The optimized design is validated via finite element analysis and experiments. As a result, the weight is reduced using topology and shape optimization but maintaining the safety of structure. Also the space efficiency is improved due to its compact size.
A genetic algorithm-based minimum weight design method is presented for steel frames containing composite beams, semi-rigid connections and column bases. Genetic Algorithms carry out optimum steel frames by selecting suitable profile sections from a specified list including 128 W sections taken from American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). The displacement and stress constraints obeying AISC Allowable Stress Design (ASD) specification and geometric (size) constraints are incorporated in the optimization process. Optimum designs of three different plane frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column and column-to-base plate connections are carried out first without considering concrete slab effects on floor beams in finite element analyses. The same optimization procedures are then repeated for the case of frames with composite beams. A program is coded in MATLAB for all optimization procedures. Results obtained from the examples show the applicability and robustness of the method. Moreover, it is proved that consideration of the contribution of concrete on the behavior of the floor beams enables a lighter and more economical design for steel frames with semi-rigid connections and column bases.
