  • One newly recorded species, Dryopteris namegatae, sect. Hirtipedes, was collected in forests in Jeju-do. Dryopteris namegatae (vernacular name: 'Tam-ra-top-ji-ne-go-sa-ri') was distinguished from other Korean congeners of sect. Hirtipedes of the genus Dryopteris by having stiff black scales on stipe and rachis, less narrowed base of lamina, and adaxial surface of pinna immersed along veins. Dryopteris hangchowensis ('Gak-si-top-ji-ne-go-sa-ri', new local name), recorded without any comments and description, was reexamined with similar taxa and was distinguished by smaller plants, brilliant leaves, many prominent fimbriate blackish scales on stipe and rachis, long-pointed apex of lamina and pinna, halfway-lobed pinna, and narrowest pinna. Descriptions and illustrations of the two species and their photographs in the habitat are provided along with a key to the species of sect. Hirtipedes of Dryopteris in Korea.

  • We have conducted faunistic study of sea lice collected from marine plankton samples of western and southern coasts of Korea. These specimens were identified as Caligus undulatus Shen and Li, 1959, belonging to family Caligidae and order Siphonostomatoida with worldwide distribution. The range extension of C. undulatus is reported in addition to the previously known distributional range from the Northwest Pacific (China, Japan, and Korea), India, Brazil, and Mexico. This species can be distinguished from all previous reports with characteristics such as overall body proportions of both sexes, structure details of mouth appendages, armature of legs, and some variation in body size. The distributional range of C. undulatus is now given with its northern and south hemisphere limit being 40 to $10^{\circ}N$ in the Indo-Pacific and $30^{\circ}S$ in the Southwest Atlantic. This is the first record of its female occurring in Korea.

  • In this study, we present new records to Korea for three ciliate species[Apogonostomum pantanalense Foissner, 2016; Keronopsis polychaeta (Borror, 1966) Jankowski, 1979; Frontonia canadensis Roque and Puytorac, 1972] collected from marine (F. canadensis) and moss-covered soil(A. pantanalense and K. polychaeta) habitats. We examined the morphology of these three ciliates based on live observations and protargol impregnation. The main characters of the three ciliates are as follows: A. pantanalense: cell size approximately $130{\times}45{\mu}m$, tail-like posterior end, and 6 or 7 ventral cirral pairs elongated to transverse cirri; K. polychaeta: size approximately $140{\times}90{\mu}m$ and approximately 18 frontal coronal cirri and 5 transverse cirri; F. canadensis: cell size approximately $100{\times}50{\mu}m$ and approximately 88 somatic kineties, 3 or 4 vestibular kineties, and 5 postoral kineties.

  • Two euplotid ciliates, Euplotes encysticus Yonezawa, 1985 and E. rariseta Curds et al., 1974, were isolated from a freshwater pond called Mulgol in Dokdo of the East Sea and from Masan Bay/Jeju Island, Korea, respectively. Both species are redescribed based on live observations and protargol impregnation. Cells of Euplotes encysticus are asymmetrically oval, $63-79{\times}41-61{\mu}m$ in vivo and capable of encystment. The cells have 31-36 adoral zone of membranelles(AZM), 9 fronto-ventral cirri (FVC), 5 transverse cirri (TC), 2-3 caudal cirri (CC), 2 marginal cirri (MC), 7 dorsal kineties (DK), and 19-22 dorsal cilia in middle DK. The cells of Euplotes rariseta has a small ovoid form and are $32-44{\times}23-35{\mu}m$ in vivo, 18-22 AZM, 10 FVC, 5 TC, 2 CC, 1 MC and 6 DK.

  • Algal genomics approaches provide a massive number of genome/transcriptome sequences and reveal the evolutionary history vis-à-vis primary and serial endosymbiosis events that contributed to the biodiversity of photosynthetic eukaryotes in the eukaryote tree of life. In particular, phylogenomic methods using several hundred or thousands of genes have provided new insights into algal taxonomy and systematics. Using this method, many novel insights into algal species diversity and systematics occurred, leading to taxonomic revisions. In addition, horizontal gene transfers (HGTs) of functional genes have been identified in algal genomes that played essential roles in environmental adaptation and genomic diversification. Finally, algal genomics data can be used to address the pangenome, including core genes shared among all isolates and partially shared strain-specific genes. However, some aspects of the pangenome concept (genome variability of intraspecies level) conflict with population genomics concepts, and the issue is closely related to defining species boundaries using genome variability. This review suggests a desirable future direction to merge algal pangenomics and population genomics beyond traditional molecular phylogeny and taxonomy.

  • During a field survey of indigenous Korean ciliates, we collected 21 unrecorded species from aquatic (freshwater and brackish water [salinity about 1.0‰] samples) and terrestrial(moss and soil samples) habitats. The morphology of these species was studied based on live observation, protargol, silver carbonate and silver nitrate impregnation, and scanning electron microscope. These species belong to seven classes as follows: 1) class Heterotrichea - Blepharisma seculum; 2) class Spirotrichea - Birojimia terricola, Bistichella variabilis, Deviata bacilliformis, Oxytricha paragranulifera, Parabistichella cf. variabilis, Steinia sphagnicola, Stichotricha aculeata, Stylonychia cf. notophora, and Tetmemena bifaria minima; 3) class Armophorea - Metopus es; 4) class Litostomatea - Acropisthium mutabile, Pseudomonilicaryon japonicum, and Rimaleptus alpinus; 5) class Phyllopharyngea - Podophrya bivacuolata; 6) class Nassophorea - Drepanomonas pauciciliata; and 7) class Oligohymenophorea - Dexiostoma campylum, Frontonia atra, Histiobalantium natans viridis, Opisthonecta minima, and Tetrahymena rostrata. Here, we provide a brief diagnosis and remark for each species.

  • Two strains of cyanobacteria were isolated from the soil of Seodaemun-gu, Seoul and from the gravel of the Ansung Stream, Gyeonggi Province, Korea, respectively. They were identified as Pantanalinema rosaneae and Alkalinema pantanalense under the Leptolyngbyaceae through the morphological, ecological, and molecular analyses and first reported in Korea. Belonging to the Leptolyngbya morphotypes, they are thin filamentous cyanobacteria and morphologically indistinguishable cryptic species. The strains of P. rosaneae and A. pantanalense isolated in Korea revealed the same cluster as their type species in the phylogenetic analysis using the 16S rRNA gene sequences, and similarities in the secondary structures of 16S-23S ITS sequences. Although both P. rosaneae and A. pantanalense were collected from water samples in the Pantanal wetland of Brazil, the P. rosaneae obtained in Korea, was soil-dwelling subaerophytic species whereas A. pantanalense was epilithic species living on gravel in the freshwater. Therefore, they are considered to have an extensive habitat.

  • Three localities of coastal sand-dunes along the western coastline of Korea: Sindu-ri, Sinhap-ri, and Jaeun-do, were surveyed for the lepidopteran fauna. This survey resulted in the records of five species new to Korea: a species of Cosmopterigidae, Cosmopterix flavidella Kuroko, 2011, based on eight specimens from Sinhap-ri and Jaeun-do; a species of Tortricidae, Noduliferola abstrusa Kuznetzov, 1973, based on five specimens from Sinhap-ri and Jaeun-do; a species of Pyralidae, Maliarpha borealis Sasaki, 2012, based on four specimens from Sindu-ri; and two species of Erebidae, Ectoblemma rosella Sugi, 1982 and Metachrostis miasma (Hampson, 1891), based on one specimen for each from Jaeun-do. Three genera, Noduliferola Kuznetzov, 1973, Maliarpha Ragonot, 1888 and Ectoblemma Sugi, 1982, are introduced for the first time to the Korean fauna. Two species, Noduliferola abstrusa and Maliarpha borealis, are suggested as the indicator species for coastal sand-dunes. The superficial and genital features of the five species found from this study are described and illustrated. A photograph of the female genitalia of Ectoblemma rosella is provided for the first time.

  • A total of 69 genera and 202 species of the family Syrphidae have been previously recognized in Korea. In the present study, we report the following 10 species new to Korea: Epistrophe aeka Kimura, 1989, Epistrophe aino (Matsumura, 1917), Epistrophe annulitarsis(Stackelberg, 1918), Epistrophe griseofasciata (Matsumura, 1918), Epistrophe sasayamana (Matsumura, 1918), Epistrophe shibakawae (Matsumura, 1917), Fagisyrphus cinctus (Fallén, 1817), Melangyna olsufjevi (Violovitsh, 1956), Melangyna pavlovskyi (Violovitsh, 1956), and Paragus clausseni Mutin, 1999. Among the four genera, the genus Fagisyrphus Dušek and Láska, 1967 is recognized for the first time in Korea. As a result, 70 genera and 212 species of the family Syrphidae are now officially recognized for the Korean fauna. For each newly recognized Korean species, we provide synonymy, diagnosis, and description with color photographs. In addition, we provide new Korean names for all newly recorded species as well as the genera Epistrophe, Fagisyrphus, and Melangyna, which previously did not have Korean names.
