  • Measurement uncertainty assessment was performed for altitude performance test for a turboshaft engine. Mathematical models of measurement were suggested for major performance parameters such as shaft horse power, fuel flow, specific fuel consumption, and airflow. The procedure was compared with the test of turbojet or turbofan engines. Uncertainty involved with the test condition measurement was assessed. Influence of the test condition measurement uncertainty on the corrected performance data was discussed. Uncertainty assessment result was provided for a example test case using a real altitude test facility. For major performance parameters, measurement uncertainties were assessed as 0.65~1.09% including the test condition measurement uncertainty, 0.36~0.94% not including it.

  • Large eddy simulation was conducted for flow development in a chamber with wall injection which simulates the cold flow in an idealized hybrid rocket motor. It was found that a peculiar timescale, roughly corresponding to St~0.5, resides in the flowfield resulting from the interaction between the main oxidizer and wall injected flows. However, the fact that this time characteristics is absent in the temperature field in the vicinity of the wall indicates that even a small regression rate renders the passive scalar, such as temperature, dissimilar to the velocity field. This implies that a classical approach, which assumes that constant turbulent Prandtl number, should be replaced by a more sophisticated turbulence models to accurately predict the temperature field in the hybrid motor.

  • It becomes critical to understand an energy coupling mechanism between flow perturbations and combustion heat release rate fluctuations for the understanding of high-frequency combustion instabilities occurring in high-performance combustion/propulsion systems. A significant amount of experimental researches have been carried out to understand flame dynamic characteristics by use of flame transfer functions with artificial flow disturbances. Among them, there exist substantial studies on flame response by the excitation of inlet flow. Recently, experimental studies simulating transversal modes excited in actual combustion systems are under way.

  • Prior concrete strength distributions can be updated by using direct information from test results as well as by taking into account indirect information due to conformity control. Due to the filtering effect of conformity control, the distribution of the material property in the accepted inspected lots will have lower fraction defectives in comparison to the distribution of the entire production (before or without inspection). A methodology is presented to quantify this influence in a Bayesian framework based on prior knowledge with respect to the hyperparameters of concrete strength distributions. An algorithm is presented in order to update prior distributions through numerical integration, taking into account the operating characteristic of the applied conformity criteria, calculated based on Monte Carlo simulations. Different examples are given to derive suitable hyperparameters for incoming strength distributions of concrete offered for conformity assessment, using updated available prior information, maximum-likelihood estimators or a bootstrap procedure. Furthermore, the updating procedure based on direct as well as indirect information obtained by conformity assessment is illustrated and used to quantify the filtering effect of conformity criteria on concrete strength distributions in case of a specific set of conformity criteria.

  • The experiment was performed at the large wind tunnel of the Chungnam National University to measure the velocity distribution around the stern of a Liquefied Natural Gas Carrier model. The data, mean velocity vectors of turbulent shear flows at the stern and near-wake including the propeller plane, were obtained by a five-hole Pilot tube for the double body model fixed inside the wind tunnel test section. The present result of the double body model shows a close agreement with the result of the lowing tank experiment performed by the KRISO for the same ship model. The characteristics of the LNG stern flow are discussed based on the measured velocity distribution. The data can be very useful for the validation of some numerical methods in computational fluid dynamics.

  • Deflection estimation at engine room upper deck panel is performed for the actual ship structure. These deflection behaviours are basically investigated from not only the data based on the full series results of nonlinear analysis using Incremental Galerkin's Method but also actual deflection data measured from damaged ship under construction in dry dock. The effects of residual stress, initial deflection and static loading are also included. The computed estimation results of upper deck plate panel including theme effects are shown that upper deck platings of new ship expected less deflection magnitude than damaged ship.
