  • Ground anchor expands the hollow wall of settled part and has the structure which resists the designed tensile load by the bearing pressure generated by the wedge of the anchor body pressing in the expanded part. Such ground anchor has been recognized for stability and economicality since 1960s in technologically advanced nations such as Japan and Europe, and in 1970s, the Japan Society of Soil Engineering has established and announced the anchor concept map. The ground anchor introduced in Korea, however, has the structural problem where the tensile strength is comes only from the ground frictional force due to expansion of the wedge body. In an interval where the ground strength is locally reduced due to fault, discontinuation or such, this is pointed out as a critical weakness where the anchor body of around 1.0m must resist the tensile load. Also, in the installation of concrete block, the concentrated stress of concrete block constructed on the uneven rock surface causes damage, and many such issues in the anchor head have been reported. Thus, in this study, by using the expanded bit for precise expansion of settled part, the ground anchor system was completed so that the bearing pressure of ground anchor can be expressed as much as possible, and the bearing plate was inserted into the ground to resolve the existing issues of concrete block. Through numerical analysis and pullout test executed for verification of site applicability, the pullout-behavior characteristics of anchor was analyzed.

  • Ground anchor method is widely used in the large scale deep excavation of urban area to support a retained wall. Excavation using the ground anchor as a supporting system near a building have many difficulties due to the limitation of construction space. This method can not be applied to the site with the insufficient space from the retained wall to the boundary line. In this case, soil improvement at the anchor bond zone can be used to secure the frictional resistance of ground anchor within the boundary. Through this method, the bond length of anchor can be shortened considerably. This paper deals with the case study on the ground excavation adjacent to a building. The object field is Yongsan Park Tower Construction Site. In this site, the enlarged anchor with soil improvement was applied to solve the problem due to the limitation of construction space. According to the results of field test and monitoring, the anchor with soil improvement is very effective to secure the frictional resistance at the anchor bond zone.

  • A hybrid system of soil-nailing and compression anchor is proposed in this paper; the system is composed of an anchor bar (installed at the tip) with two PC strands and a steel bar. After drilling a hole, installing proposed hybrid systems, and filling the hole with grouting material, prestress is applied to the anchor bar to restrict the deformation at the head and/or to prevent shallow slope failures. However, since the elongation rate of PC strand is much larger than that of steel bar, yield at the steel bar will occur much earlier than the PC strand. It means that the yield load of the hybrid system will be overestimated if we simply add yield loads of the two - anchor bar and PC strands. It might be needed to try to match the yielding time of the two materials by applying the prestress to the anchor bar. It means that the main purpose of applying prestress to the anchor bar should be two-fold: to restrict the deformation at the nail head; and more importantly, to maximize the design load of the hybrid system by utilizing load transfer mechanism that transfers the prestress applied at the tip to the head through anchor bar. In order to study the load transfer mechanism in a systematic way, in-situ pullout tests were performed with the following conditions: soil-nailing only; hybrid system with the variation of prestress stresses from 0kN to 196kN. It was found that the prestress applied to the anchor system will induce the compressive stress to the steel bar; it will result in decrease in the slope of load-displacement curve of the steel bar. Then, the elongation at which the steel bar will reach yield stress might become similar to that of PC strands. By taking advantage of prestress to match elongations at yield, the pullout design load of the hybrid system can be increased up to twice that of the soil-nailing system.

  • The importance of location-based services has been steadily rising, leading to the increased integration of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology in mobile devices and vehicles. Conventional UWB-based positioning systems typically determine the distance and direction between devices or track locations by pre-installing UWB anchors in environments like buildings or factories. This paper analyzes the characteristics of a distributed node-based Anchor-less UWB positioning system, measuring its actual ranging period and distance estimation error with varying node numbers and configured ranging periods. Experimental results show that even without anchors or node synchronization, the system achieves an average error of 0.32 meters.

  • Localization of nodes is a key technology for application of wireless sensor network. Having a GPS receiver on every sensor node is costly. In the past, several approaches, including range-based and range-free, have been proposed to calculate positions for randomly deployed sensor nodes. Most of them use some special nodes, called anchor nodes, which are assumed to know their own locations. Other sensors compute their locations based on the information provided by these anchor nodes. This paper uses a single mobile anchor node to move in the sensing field and broadcast its current position periodically. We provide a weighted centroid localization algorithm that uses coefficients, which are decided by the influence of mobile anchor node to unknown nodes, to prompt localization accuracy. We also suggest a criterion which is used to select mobile anchor node which involve in computing the position of nodes for improving localization accuracy. Weighted centroid localization algorithm is simple, and no communication is needed while locating. The localization accuracy of weighted centroid localization algorithm is better than maximum likelihood estimation which is used very often. It can be applied to many applications.

  • The ground anchor used in domestic area, which resists by adhesion between anchor body and the ground to the external force, seems not to be adequate for soft ground and urban area where the boundary between structures is close because the ground is disturbed and lost its strength during boring. In order to overcome such a shortcoming an expanded anchor system has been developed. The ground expansion is accomplished by means of Pulse Discharge Technology. In this technology, a high voltage of electricity is stored and discharged in milliseconds which induces high pressure acting on the ground. By making a couple of bulbs, a passive resistance as well as shaft resistance are mobilized, and therefore a higher pullout resistance comparing existing ground anchors is developed. In this study, a couple of full scale tests were conducted in order to figure out how much the resistance of an expanded anchor increases comparing to the straight. As a result, it was found that a remarkable increase in ultimate pullout capacity is observed for the soft ground and as the number of bulb increases. In addtion, as a result of applying to a cut slope reinforcement, it appeared that the length of fixed zone of anchor can be reduced effectively.

  • Fishery sea anchor is widely used for many fishing vessels. However, standardization of the dimension and terminology of the fishery sea anchor has not been achieved, reducing the reliability of the performance and safety of the fishery sea anchor. Therefore, this study researches the reality of usage of fishery sea anchor and then attempts to suggest the development direction of the standard draft as basic data. As a result of the survey on the reality of usage show that various terms were used for each part of the fishery sea anchor (including the incorrect form of non-standard words derived from Japanese) and that the production of this product in the fishery sea anchor market was concentrated on one specific manufacturer. In addition, the main specifications of the fishery sea anchor are set and manufactured based on conventional experience without standards. In the field, there was no standardized drawing for fishery sea anchor and users had low awareness of the main specifications of fishery sea anchor. Therefore, this study suggested the following regarding the fishery sea anchor: standard terms for each part including Korean and English names and standard drawing of sea anchor. It is hoped that this study will contribute to research for the standardization of fishery sea anchor, which will increase in reliability and lead to increased interest in standardization in the fishery field.

  • We investigated the biomechanical properties of a newly designed self-expansion type anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) anchor. The ACL anchor consists of the ring section giving the elastic force, the wedge for maintaining in contact with the femur tunnel wall and the link suspending hamstring graft or artificial ligament. The main design parameters that determine the performance of this device were the expansion angle (${\theta}$) and the thickness ($t_R$). The Ti6Al4V anchors were heated after inserting in a jig for 1 hour at $800^{\circ}C$ in a protective argon gas atmosphere and allowed to cool to room temperature in the furnace. In order to investigate the influence of the expansion angle and the thickness of the ring on the biomechanical properties of the anchor, the maximum pull-out load, stiffness and slippage of the ACL anchor were measured using the pull-out tester, and statistical analyses were also executed. The present results showed that the design parameters gave a significant effect on the performance of the self- expansion type of anchor. The pull-out load of the ACL anchors significantly increased as the thickness of the ring section was increased, having a similar trend for both expansion angles. The ACL anchor showed about 2.5 times higher values of the pull-out load than that of the minimum load (500N)required for the "accelerated rehabilitation". The optimum ${\theta}$ and $t_R$ values of this ACL anchor were suggested to have sufficient resistance against the pull-out force, high stiffness and relatively low slippage after ACL reconstruction.
