  • In wide-ranging information society, fast and easy access to information in language of one's choice is indispensable, which may be provided by using various multilingual Natural Language Processing (NLP) applications. Natural language text contains references among different language elements, called anaphoric links. Resolving anaphoric links is a key problem in NLP. Anaphora resolution is an essential part of NLP applications. Anaphoric links need to be properly interpreted for clear understanding of natural languages. For this purpose, a mechanism is desirable for the identification and resolution of these naturally occurring anaphoric links. In this paper, a framework based on Hobbs syntactic approach and a system developed by Lappin & Leass is proposed for resolution of reflexive anaphoric links, present in Urdu text documents. Generally, anaphora resolution process takes three main steps: identification of the anaphor, location of the candidate antecedent(s) and selection of the appropriate antecedent. The proposed framework is based on exploring the syntactic structure of reflexive anaphors to find out various features for constructing heuristic rules to develop an algorithm for resolving these anaphoric references. System takes Urdu text containing reflexive anaphors as input, and outputs Urdu text with resolved reflexive anaphoric links. Despite having scarcity of Urdu resources, our results are encouraging. The proposed framework can be utilized in multilingual NLP (m-NLP) applications.

  • In this paper, I show that anaphora across speakers shows both dynamic and static sides. To capture them all formally, I will adopt semantics based on the assumption that variables range over individual concepts that connect epistemic alternatives. As information increases, a variable can take a different range of possible individual concepts. This is captured by the notion of virtual individual (= vi), a set of individual concepts which are indistinguishable in an information state. The use of a pronoun involves two information states, one for the antecedent, which is always part of the common ground, and the other for the pronoun. Information increase changes vis for variables in the common ground. A pronoun can be used felicitously if there is a unique virtual individual in the information state for the antecedent which does not split in two or more distinctive virtual individuals in the information state for the pronoun. The felicity condition for cross-speaker anaphora can be satisfied in declaratives involving modality, interrogatives and imperatives in a rather less demanding way, because in these cases the utterance does not necessarily require non-trivial personal information for proper use of a pronoun.

  • This paper argues for a need to adopt a conceptually radical approach to zero anaphora resolution in Korean. It is shown that a number of apparently conflicting constraints, mostly motivated by lexical, syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic factors, are involved in determining the referential identity of zero pronouns in Korean. It is also argued that some of the major concepts of Optimality Theory can provide a good theoretical framework to predict the antecedents to zero pronouns in general. A partial formalization of 07-based constraints at the morpho-syntactic and lexico-semantical level is provided. It is argued that the lexico-semantic restrictions on adjacent expressions play the most important role in the anaphora resolution process along with a variant of the binding principle, formulated in semantic terms. Other pragmatically motivated constraints that incorporate some important intuitions of Centering Theory are proposed too.

  • Elliptical and anaphoric utterances occur frequently during spoken dialogue. Because discourse analysis rests on the basic premise that linguistic items cannot be understood without reference to the context, ellipsis and anaphora resolution plays an important role in discourse analysis. In this paper, we present a spoken dialogue system improving the robustness at dialogue level based on discourse analysis, such as anaphora and ellipsis resolution. The applicability and effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated in the TV domain.

  • The present paper studies the development of null anaphor, with special attention to whether Korean children's use of null anaphora exhibits the type of directionality preforence predicted by Lust & Mangione(1983)and Lust(1986).If these researchers are correct, anaphora in Korean children's language should be constrained backward since Korean is a left-branching language. That is,it is predicted that Korean chidren would perfer backward anaphora to the forward pattern. For the purpose of this study, ninety-six children were individually tested in an elicited imitation task, twenty-four children from four age groups(4:1-9:7).Three types of constructions, sentences involving a redundant NP,forward patterns of ananphora, and backsward patterns of anaphora were devised. It was discovered that like English speaking children, Korean children prefer forward patterns of anaphora to backward structures. It was thus speculated that the forward preference may well be indedpendent of grammatical factors, reflecting instead processing considerations which favour mention of the referent befor the use of anaphoric elements.

  • Two experiments were conducted to explore the effects of anaphora and demonstrative ellipsis on reference resolution. This study assumed that two type of ellipsis could be sensitive to antecedents' saliency: the reverse typicality and mention order of antecedents. The muti-task approach measured the antecedent's activation level and processing load for the conflict resolution of theories of anaphoric resolution. In Experiment 1, using ellipsis for anaphora, participants read a series of sentence pairs by self-paced and performed a probe recognition test. The results showed the main effects of antecedent's typicality and mention order in both tasks. In Experiment 2, using noun phrase without demonstrative for anaphora, participants read a series of sentence pairs by self-paced and performed a probe recognition test. The results showed main effects of mention order of antecedents for probe recognition task only. The first antecedent was recognized faster than the second one. The results of two experiments suggested that anaphora type and antecedent's saliency were dynamically interact in reference resolution for Korean.

  • This paper aims to account for the backward anaphora that seem to be against the c-command requirements in the anaphor-antecedent relations. It was claimed that the binding conditions should apply at LF fur the backward binding cases involving phych-verbs and causatives. Under the recent development of minimalism where the concept of levels disappears to adopt a cyclic derivation, the data that show the backward binding phenomena have not been discussed in the area of the binding theory. In this paper, I argue that the backward binding cases can be incorporated into the core binding phenomena with the general assumptions on the thematic prominence. It is discussed how the dependency between NPs involving backward anaphora is determined by the thematic prominency. The Agree operation takes place between the probe T and the goal with the uninterpretable u[a] and [prominent] feature, by which an anaphor is valued, producing a proper interpretation.

  • Zero anaphora occurs frequently in Korean complex sentences, and it makes the interpretation of sentences difficult. This paper proposes splitting algorithms and zero anaphora recovery rules for the purpose of handling zero anaphora, and also presents a resolution methodology. The paper covers quotations, conjunctive sentences and embedded sentences out of the complex sentences shown in the newspaper articles, with an exclusion of embedded sentences of auxiliary verb. We manage the quotations using the equivalent noun phrase deletion rule according to subject person constraint, the nominalized embedded sentences using the equivalent noun phrase deletion rule, the adnominal embedded sentences using the relative noun phrase deletion rule and the conjunctive sentences using the conjunction reduction rule in reverse. The classified table of the endings which relate to a formation of the complex sentences is used for splitting the complex sentences, and the syntactic rules, applied when being omitted, are used in reverse for recovering zero anaphora. The presented rule showed the result of 83.53% in perfect resolution and 11.52% in partial resolution.
