  • Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are distant, powerful sources of radiation over the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves to gamma-rays. There is much evidence that they are driven by gravitational accretion of stars, dust, and gas, onto central massive black holes (MBHs) imprisoning anywhere from $\~$1 to $\~$10,000 million solar masses; such objects may naturally form in the centers of galaxies during their normal dynamical evolution. A small fraction of AGNs, of the radio-loud type (RLAGNs), are somehow able to generate powerful synchrotron-emitting structures (cores, jets, lobes) with sizes ranging from pc to Mpc. A brief summary of AGN observations and theories is given, with an emphasis on RLAGNs. Preliminary results from the imaging of 10000 extragalactic radio sources observed in the MITVLA snapshot survey, and from a new analytic theory of the time-variable power output from Kerr black hole magnetospheres, are presented. To better understand the complex physical processes within the central engines of AGNs, it is important to confront the observations with theories, from the viewpoint of analyzing the time-variable behaviours of AGNs - which have been recorded over both 'short' human ($10^0-10^9\;s$) and 'long' cosmic ($10^{13} - 10^{17}\;s$) timescales. Some key ingredients of a basic mathematical formalism are outlined, which may help in building detailed Monte-Carlo models of evolving AGN populations; such numerical calculations should be potentially important tools for useful interpretation of the large amounts of statistical data now publicly available for both AGNs and RLAGNs.

  • It's been almost 20 years since the adoption of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) in Korea since 1994. There have been big progresses in the GMP regulations and its implementations. 'New GMP' in 2008 has adopted validation, pre-approval GMP evaluation, annual quality review, etc.. Upon the submission of PIC/S (Pharmaceutical Inspection Cooperation Scheme) application by Korea's Ministry of Food and Drug Safety in April, 2012, Korea is facing new opportunity to level up Korea GMP regulations. As such, this study suggested GMP revision points by comparing and analyzing the differences between PIC/S GMP and Korea GMP. Those areas which GMP is not required such as radiopharmaceuticals and medical gases should adopt GMP. And independent GMP regulation is needed for Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients and investigational medicinal products. Also, those regulations shall be implemented in the higher level of legal status. Finally, rather than pursuing GMP harmonization only for PIC/S membership, GMP improvement in the long term shall be taken into consideration by reflecting current quality issues such as ICH Q8 (Pharmaceutical development), Q9 (Quality Risk Management) and Q10 (Pharmaceutical Quality System).

  • Objectives : The aim of the research is to study the edible parts and cooking methods for the Korean medicinal plants using documents of Japanese occupation era. Through this study, we expect that it will be used as a basis data on further Korean traditional edible herb. Methods : The research analyze the usage of 74 species of medicinal plants that are listed in the 『Wild Food Plants of Chosen(Korea)』 along with analyzing 8 extra documents about famine relief plants and cooking method written during Japanese occupation. Results : The result shows that the sprouts and buds are the most popular for the edible purposes but they are never used for medical reason. Roots and fruits take the highest percentage when it comes to medical purposes. Types of medicinal plants that were used a lot of cooking methods were side dishes such as 'Namul, Saengchae, Jangajji'. Conclusions : Using medicinal plants for edible and medical purposes were traditionally familiar with Korean culture but the changes provoked by industrialization forbid the knowledge to pass through. However, recently, the trend of having a healthy life interests people to backtrack this traditional way of using medicinal plants with new purposes. To inherit traditional knowledge and for the future development of Korean traditional ingredients, further research should be conducted.

  • This study evaluated the general nutritional ingredients such as crude fats, crude ashes, crude proteins, total polyphenols, and total flavonoids in 18 kinds of edible tree sprouts. The tree sprouts of Philadelphus schrenckii, Lycium chinense, and Morus alba had the highest crude fat, crude ash, and crude protein content, respectively. The tree sprouts of Cedrela sinensis (CSS) with high ABTS+ radical scavenging activities had a high content of total polyphenols (175.65 mg/g ext.) and total flavonoids (75.18 mg/g ext.). The simultaneous determination of flavonoids such as rutin, isoquercitrin, quercitrin, afzelin, and quercetin in CSS was conducted using high-performance liquid chromatography with a wavelength of 270 nm. Among the flavonoids, the content of quercitrin in CSS was the highest at 59.28 mg/g ext. This study also aids the quality control of many edible tree sprouts by analyzing the general components, total polyphenols, and total flavonoids.

  • The quality control of coarse aggregate among aggregates, which are the main ingredients of concrete, is currently carried out by SPC(Statistical Process Control) method through sampling. We construct a smart factory for manufacturing innovation by changing the quality control of coarse aggregates to inspect the coarse aggregates based on this image by acquired images through the camera instead of the current sieve analysis. First, obtained images were preprocessed, and HED(Hollistically-nested Edge Detection) which is the filter learned by deep learning segment each object. After analyzing each aggregate by image processing the segmentation result, fineness modulus and the aggregate shape rate are determined by analyzing result. The quality of aggregate obtained through the video was examined by calculate fineness modulus and aggregate shape rate and the accuracy of the algorithm was more than 90% accurate compared to that of aggregates through the sieve analysis. Furthermore, the aggregate shape rate could not be examined by conventional methods, but the content of this paper also allowed the measurement of the aggregate shape rate. For the aggregate shape rate, it was verified with the length of models, which showed a difference of ±4.5%. In the case of measuring the length of the aggregate, the algorithm result and actual length of the aggregate showed a ±6% difference. Analyzing the actual three-dimensional data in a two-dimensional video made a difference from the actual data, which requires further research.

  • Jangan-eup, located in Busan, South Korea,is a famous pottery-producing area in the Joseon Dynasty period. The aim of this paper was to determine the correlation of the pottery from each kiln site of Jangan-eup by analyzing the ingredients of clay as well as its production technique and firing condition. The materials that were used for the study were fragments of inlaid celadon, white porcelain, and white porcelain painted with underglazed iron excavated from six kiln sites of Jangan-eup:Sil-li, Daeryong-li, Hajangan-li, Sangjangan-li, Yongso-li, and Dumyeong-li. In each of the samples from the six kilns, cristobalite, mullite, and quats were found. The firing temperature distinguished from the crystal structure was higher in the following order: Dumyeongli>Sangjangan-li>Daeryong-li>Hajangan-li>Yongso-li>Sil-li. The samples were divided into four groups based on the ingredients of the clayfound therein: the Sil-li andDaeryong-li group, the Hajangan-li and Sangjangan-li group, the Yongso-li group, and the Dumyeong-li group. It was also found that the sample of Dumyeong-li was made using the most homogeneous clay compared with the other samples. The pottery of Jangan-eup had $40-400{\mu}m$ glaze, had bubbles in their bodies, and had $10-150{\mu}m$ sizes.

  • Much research is conducted on the biological activities of medicinal herbs, traditional plants, and agricultural products, cultivated in Korea. This study focused on optimization of hot-water extraction methods for such products, by analyzing and monitoring extraction characteristics using a response surface methodology. We found that the total phenolics contents, electron-donating abilities, and nitrite-scavenging abilities of extracts were significantly affected both by the solvent used for extraction, and by the nature of the particular herb or plant under study. The extraction efficiencies of valuable ingredients such as alliin, allicin, and total thiosulfinate, were greatly affected by extraction temperature, but not by extraction time or the solvent used. We elicited a regression formula for each variable. We first entered the optimal values of all extraction conditions giving active ingredients into the model. Next, we entered the optimal values of all extraction conditions favoring the retention of valuable antioxidant characteristics. Finally, we entered processing factors into the model. Overall, the optimal extraction was at $80^{\circ}C$ for 3.5 hr with 8.5 ml of solvent/g of sample. The predicted values of each variable were similar to the actual values.
