볼 밀링에 의한 석영의 결정도 변화와 밀링 매체의 마모의 영향 (Ball-milling Induced Changes in the Crystallinity of Quartz and Wear of Milling Media)

  • 석영(SiO2)은 지각의 암석을 형성하는 주요 광물 중의 하나이다. SiO2의 원자 구조는 다양한 마찰 과정에서 변화할 수 있다. 비정질화, 수화 및 실리카겔 형성을 수반하는 석영 암석의 마찰 감소는 지진 및 관련 현상에 대한 광물학적 통찰력을 제공한다. 볼 밀링과 회전 전단 실험을 이용하여 상기 현상의 광물학적 기원이 밝혀지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 밀링 과정에서의 다양한 변수를 고려하여 SiO2의 비정질화를 위한 볼 밀링의 최적 실험 조건을 결정하였다. 높은 밀링 속도에서 볼 밀링 시간이 증가함에 따라 SiO2의 결정도는 점차 감소하여 비정질화되었다. 밀링 매체의 마모 정도와 SiO2의 비정질화에 미치는 영향은 서로 다른 밀링 재료(ZrO2, stainless steel)를 사용하여 분석하였다. 밀링 시간이 증가함에 따라 볼의 마모량이 증가하였다. 또한 볼에서 마모된 스테인리스스틸 입자는 비정질화되는 SiO2와 상호작용하여 Si-O-Cr을 형성하는 경향이 있다. 이러한 결과는 SiO2와 같이 비교적 경도가 높은 다양한 물질들의 볼 밀링에 의한 원자 구조의 변화 과정을 이해하고, 다양한 지질학적 마찰 과정을 이해하는 데 도움이 될 것이다.

Application of Mechanochemical Processing for Preparation of Si3N4-based Powder Mixtures

  • Mechanochemical processing (MCP) involves several high-energy collisions of powder particles with the milling media and results in the increased reactivity/sinterability of powder. The present paper shows results of mechanochemical processing (MCP) of silicon nitride powder mixture with the relevant sintering additives. The effects of MCP were studied by structural changes of powder particles themselves as well as by the resulting sintering/densification ability. It has been found that MCP significantly enhances reactivity and sinterability of the resultant material: silicon nitride ceramics could be pressureless sintered at $1500^{\circ}C$. Nevertheless, a degree of a silicon nitride crystal lattice and powder particle destruction (amorphization) as detected by XRD studies, is limited by the specific threshold. If that value is crossed then particle's surface damage effects are prevailing thus severe evaporation overdominates mass transport at elevated temperature. It is discussed that the cross-solid interaction between particles of various chemical composition, triggered by many different factors during mechanochemical processing, including a short-range diffusion in silicon nitride particles after collisions with other types of particles plays more important role in enhanced reactivity of tested compositions than amorphization of the crystal lattice itself. Controlled deagglomeration of $Si_3N_4$ particles during the course of high-energy milling was also considered.

Thermal Stability of Amorphous Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn Prepared by Mechanical Alloying

  • Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn quaternary amorphous alloys of $Ti_{50}Cu_{32}Ni_{15}Sn_3$, $Ti_{50}Cu_{25}Ni_{20}Sn_5$, and $Ti_{50}Cu_{23}Ni_{20}Sn_7$ composition were prepared by mechanical alloying in a planetary high-energy ball-mill (AGO-2). The amorphization of all three alloys was found to set in after milling at 300rpm speed for 2h. A complete amorphization was observed for $Ti_{50}Cu_{32}Ni_{15}Sn_3$ and $Ti_{50}Cu_{25}Ni_{20}Sn_5$ after 30h and 20h of milling, respectively. Differential scanning calorimetry analyses revealed that the thermal stability increased in the order of $Ti_{50}Cu_{32}Ni_{15}Sn_3$, $Ti_{50}Cu_{25}Ni_{20}Sn_5$, and $Ti_{50}Cu_{23}Ni_{20}Sn_7$.

게터용 Zr57V36Fe7 합금의 수소 흡수특성에 미치는 비정질화의 영향 (The Effects of Amorphization on Hydrogen Absorption Properties of Zr57V36Fe7 Getter alloy)

  • The hydrogen sorption speeds of $Zr_{57}V_{36}Fe_7$ amorphous alloy and its crystallized alloys were evaluated at room temperature $Zr_{57}V_{36}Fe_7$ amorphous alloy was prepared by ball milling. The amorphous alloy was crystallized through two stages. Initially, $\alpha-Zr$ solid solution was appeared from the amorphous phase. Two cubic Laves compounds were precipitated afterwards from the remained amorphous and from excessively saturated solid solution at higher temperature. The hydrogen sorption speed of the partially crystallized alloy was higher than that of amorphous. The enhanced sorption speed of partially crystallized alloy was explained in terms of surface oxygen stability which has been known to retard the activation of amorphous alloys. The retardation could be reduce by crystallization process resulting in the observed increase in sorption property.

  • A detailed investigation and structure of tested samples are clearly presented. As a reference, $Ge_1Se_1Te_2$/Sb only sample was also investigated. We used compound of Ge-Se-Te material for phase-change cell. Actually, the performance properties have been improved surprisingly then conventional Ge-Sb-Te. However, crystallization time was as long as ever for amorphization time. We conducted this esperiment in order to solve that problem by doping-Sb.

Amorphization of Silicon by 250 keV Electron Irradiation and Hydrogen Annealing

  • We observed that optical properties of silicon changed under high dose electron irradiation at 250 keV. Our experimental results revealed that the optical transmission through a silicon wafer is significantly increased by electron irradiation. Transmission increase by the change in the absorption coefficient is explained through an analogy with amorphous silicon. Moreover, solar cell open-circuit voltages indicated that defects were generated by electron irradiation, and that the defects responded to annealing. Our results demonstrated that the optical properties of silicon can be controlled by a combination of electron irradiation and hydrogen annealing.
