Water molecules on a Ru(0001) surface are anomalously acidic compared to bulk water. The observation was made by conducting reactive ion scattering, reflection absorption infrared spectroscopy, and temperature-programmed desorption measurements for the adsorption of ammonia onto a water layer formed on Ru(0001). The study shows that the water molecules in the first intact $H_2O$ bilayer spontaneously release a proton to NH3 adsorbates to produce $NH_4{^+}$. However, such proton transfer does not occur for $H_2O$, OH, and H in a mixed adsorption layer or for $H_2O$ in a thick ice film surface.

Purpose In the preparation process for N-13 Ammonia injections, there were radioactive medicines adsorbed on filters remarkably. Hereby, we have compared the adsorption rate and quality test on Millex GS filter and Satorious Minisart filter, both representatively hydrophilic sterilizing filters, also evaluated which filter is more accommodative for N-13 Ammonia injection. Materials and Methods The filters used for sterilization of N-13 Ammonia injections were Millex GS filter($0.22{\mu}m$) mand Satorious Minisart filter ($0.2{\mu}m$), which are generally used to strain aqueous solutions. After the N-13 Ammonia passes through each sterilization filter, the adsorption rate of the filter (n=10) is determined by measuring not only the radioactivity through the filter also the amount of radioactivity remaining in it using a Dose Calibrator. The N-13 Ammonia injections after each filter is tested by the quality control test to conform to the Samsung Medical Center standard. Results The ratio of radioactivity passed through Millex GS indicated $29.0{\pm}17.6%$. Satorious Minisart filters output was $80.9{\pm}3.2%$, respectively. Each ratio of radioactivity adsorbed on the sterile filter was $71.0{\pm}17.6%$ for Millex GS and $19.1{\pm}3.2%$ for the Satorious Minisart filters, respectively. Furthermore, on the ratio of filtered radioactivity, Using Satorious Minisart filter showed about 2.8 times higher than using Millex GS filter. The quality testing of N-13 Ammonia injections through each filter met the Samsung Medical Center standard. Conclusion The Millex GS filter is composed of cellulose acetate and cellulose nitrate, whereas the Satorious Minisart filter if composed only of cellulose acetate. Therefore, the presence of cellulose nitrate in the membrane seems to have made differences. Therefore, the use of Satorious Minisart filter in the preparation of N-13 Ammonia injection solution minimized the loss of radioactive medicines due to filter adsorption, thereby improving the synthesis yield.
Filters were evaluated to use in the collection of ammonia and ammonium salts in the atmosphere. Ammonia from standard gas generator was collected on a glass fiber filter impregnated with a mixture of 3% boric acid and 25% glycerin. The collection efficiency by the impregnated filter was 96.4${\pm}$2.15% in pH control method and 97.4${\pm}$1.06% in the atmosphere for five measurements, respectively. Adsorption and desorption of gaseous ammonia were compared using three commercially available filters; glass fiber, quartz fiber and polycarbonate filters. Both glass and quartz fiber filters indicated some loss of ammonium salts and adsorption of ammonia, respectively. However, polycarbonate filter was found to be satisfactory for the collection of ammonium salts in the atmosphere. The minimum measurable concentration of ammonia was 0.83ppb (ca. 0.63${\mu}g$/$m^3$) by spectrophotometry of the indophenol method for the sample collected by 47mm${\phi}$ filter(20l/min, 60min). The sensitivity of the present method is about 20 folds higher than that of conventional method of bubbler collection followed by spectrophotometry, so that this method makes it possible to measure thevariation of ammoniacal concentrations in the atmosphere for a short time period of about 60 min.

The $SO_2$ and $NO_x$ removal with an activated coke catalyst was conducted by a two-stage reaction which first $SO_2$ was oxidized to $H_2SO_4$ and then $NO_x$ was reduced to $N_2$. But if unreacted sulfur dioxide entered in the second stage, the $NO_x$ reduction was hindered by the reaction with ammonia. In this study, experimental investigations by using lab-scale column apparatus on the product and the reactivity of $SO_2$ with ammonia over coke catalyst which was activated with sulfuric acid was carried out through ultimate analysis DTA, TGA and SEM of catalyst before and after the reaction. Also, the effect of reaction emperature on the reactivity of $SO_2$ with ammonia was determined by means of breakthrough curves with time. The obtained results from this study were summarized as following; Activated cokes were decreased carbon component and increased oxygen and sulfur components in comparison with original cokes. The products over coke catalyst were faced fine crystal of $(NH_4)_2SO_4$, which results in the pressure loss of reacting system. The order of general reactivity in terms of the reaction temperature after breakthrough for $SO_2$ was found to be $150^{\circ}C$ > $200^{\circ}C$ > $100^{\circ}C$. This was related to adsorption amounts of ammonia on the activated cokes.

Solid materials of ammonia sources with SCR have been considered for the application of lean NOx reduction in automobile industry, to overcome complex problems of liquid urea based SCR. These solid materials produce ammonia gas directly with proper heating and can be packaged by compact size, because of high volumetric ammonia density. Among ammonium salts and metal ammine chlorides, calcium ammine chloride was focused on this paper due to low decomposition temperature. In order to make calcium ammine chloride in lab-scale, simple reactor and glove box was designed and built with ammonium gas tank, regulator, and sensors. Basic test conditions of charging ammonia gas to anhydrous calcium chloride are chosen from equilibrium vapor pressure by Van't Hoff plot based on thermodynamic properties of materials. Synthetic method of calcium ammine chloride were studied for different durations, temperatures, and pressures with proper ammonia gas charged, as a respect of ammonia gas adsorption rate(%) from simple weight calculations which were confirmed by IC. Also, lab-made calcium ammine chloride were analyzed by TGA and DSC to clarify decomposition step in the equations of chemical reaction. To understand material characteristics for lab-made calcium ammine chloride, DA, XRD and FT-IR analysis were performed with published data of literature. From analytical results, water content in lab-made calcium ammine chloride can be discovered and new test procedures of water removal were proposed.
Control of Sediment is very important in prawn farm due to the eruption of toxic material such as W1ionized H2S, NH3 and NO2-. In this study, column test study, column with filter media such as activated carbon, zeolite, oyster shell and iron chloride to evaluate the reduction of toxicity from sediment ammonia-N(NH3) was effectively removed by Zeolite and oyster shell. It was indicated that ammonium ion(NH4+) was removed by ion exchange of zeolite. And the ammonia in the column of oyster shell was existed as the form of NH4+, which is not toxic for prawn because oyster shell was stably kept around pH 8. Therefore, some of ammonia(NH3) was reduced by oyster shell. Hydrogen sulfide and COD were effectively removed by adsorption of activated carbon and a partial removal of hydrogen sulfide was accomplished by Oyster shell. Phosphorous was removed by activated carbon, oyster shell and iron chloride. In prawn farm, the concentration of ammonia was increased with increase of pH by algae photosynthesis in the column of activated carbon, zeolite and iron chloride, but it was revealed that pH was stably kept in the column of oyster shell.
As a replacement for activated carbon, biochar was synthesized and used for the adsorptive removal of formaldehyde and nitrogen oxide. Biochar was produced from the fast pyrolysis of the red marine macro alga, Pyropia tenera. The P. tenera char was then activated with steam, ammonia and KOH to alter its characteristics. The adsorption of formaldehyde, which is one of the main indoor air pollutants, onto the seaweed char was performed using 1-ppm formaldehyde and the char was activated using a range of methods. The char activated with both the KOH and ammonia treatments showed the highest adsorptive removal efficiency, followed by KOH-treated char, ammonia-treated char, steam-treated char, and non-activated char. The removal of 1000-ppm NO over untreated char, KOH-treated char, and activated carbon was also tested. While the untreated char exhibited little activity, the KOH-treated char removed 80% of the NO at 50℃, which was an even higher NO removal efficiency than that achieved by activated carbon.
Ammonia is a useful substance which is widely used in various industries. It is generally released by the decomposition of agricultural wastes and known to have toxic effects on human beings. Due to the common usage, it is possible to cause water pollution through either direct or indirect leakage. Such cases, it is preferable to use the adsorption capacity of zeolite to rapidly remove ammonium ions, but it is not sufficiently removed by the adsorption only. In this paper, the removal efficiency of ammonium ion through both the adsorption capacities of commercial synthetic zeolites and the biological mechanism of microorganisms were compared. In addition, microorganisms were immobilized on the zeolite in order to enhance the removal efficiency by applying a chemo-biological process. As a result, the standard commercial zeolite showed 67~81% of the removal efficiency in 2~4 hours at a 100 ppm concentration of ammonium, whereas the selected microorganism Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. Pneumoniae showed up to 97% within 8 hours. When the microorganism was immobilized on the zeolite, the highest removal efficiency of approximately 98.5% were observed within 8 hours.
Polyethylenimine-crosslinked chitin (PEI-chitin) was developed as a biosorbent to effectively remove dyestuffs from dye-containing wastewater. A representative reactive dye, Reactive Orange 16 (RO16) was used as a model dye. The effect of pH, isotherm, kinetic and desorption experiments were performed to evaluate the adsorption/desorption ability of PEI-chitin for RO16. As a result, the maximum adsorption capacity calculated by the Langmuir model was 266.3 mg/g at pH 2, and the time needed for adsorption equilibrium was evaluated to be about 20, 60, and 240 min for 50, 100, and 200 mg/L, respectively. The desorption experiments were carried out using various eluents such as ammonia/ethanol mixture, NaOH, $NaHCO_3$, and $Na_2CO_3$, and the highest desorption rate was 75.24% in the ammonia/ethanol mixture.
Four inorganic packing materials (zeocarbon, porous celite, porous glass, zeolite) and a earthworm cast were compared with regard to the removal of ammonia in a biofilter inoculated with earthworm cast. Physical adsorption of ammonia on packing materials were negligible except zeocarbon (23.5 g-$NH_3$/kg), and cell immobilization capacity have similar values irrespective of packing materials. Pressure drops of the packed bed were in order of earthworm cast zeocarbon zeolite porous glass porous. The maximum elimination capacity ($g-Nkg^{-1}$$d^{-1}$ ) of ammonia, which were based on a unit volume of packing material, were in order of zeocarbon (526) earthworm cast (220) porous celite (93) > zeolite (68) > porous glass (53). By using kinetic analysis, the maximum removal rates ($V_{m}$ ) and the saturation constant ($K_{s}$ ) for ammonia were determined, and zeocarbon showed superior performance among the five materials.
