This paper deals with a flat type ultrasonic motor, which uses a longitudinal-bending multi mode vibrator of rectangular form. This ultrasonic motor was designed by combination of the first longitudinal and eighth bending mode, and the motor consisted of a straight aluminum alloy bar bonded with piezoelectric ceramic elements as a driving element. The geometrical dimensions of the rectangular aluminum vibrator were determined by Euler-Bernoulli theory In the experimental device, piezoelectric ceramics ( a piece of ceramic for the L-mode, $24\;{\times}\;8\;{\times}\;1[mm]$, and four pieces for the B-mode, $12.5\;{\times}\;8\;{\times}\;1[mm]$) were attached to one side of a aluminum plate($100\;{\times}\;8\;{\times}\;1[mm]$), and the stator was supported with a plastic case. As results, no-load rpm was 50[rev./m] when applied voltage was 150[Vrms] at the resonance frequency, and as the voltage was increased, the rpm was increased.

The aim of the present study is to evaluate electrochemical corrosion characteristics of base metal and weldment of Al-Mg alloy in seawater solution. The specimen was 5mm thick 5083-H321 Al alloy plate which was butt-welded using gas metal arc welding (GMAW). To identify the types of inclusions in the weldment, the microstructural observation was performed along with Energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analysis. The anodic polarization experiments were performed to evaluate the corrosion characteristics. After the anodic polarization test, the corroded surface was observed by SEM(scanning electron microscope) and EDS. The result of the analysis revealed a large number of voids in the weldment, especially coarse grains and inclusions in the heat affected zone. The corrosion current density of the weldment was found to be approximately 13 times higher than that of the base metal, indicating lower corrosion resistance of the weldment due to the defects in the weldment and the heat affected zone.

This present paper investigated the mechanical properties and the microstructures of each penetration shapes classifying the conduction shape area and the keyhole shape area about electron beam welded 120(T)mm thick plated aluminum 5052 112H. As a result the penetration depth is increased linearly according to the output power, but the aspect ratio is decreased after the regular output power. In the conduction shape area, the Heat affected zone is observed relatively wider than the keyhole shape area. In the material front surface of the welded specimen, the width is decreased but the width in the material rear surface is increased. After the measuring the Micro Vikers Hardness, it showed almost similar hardness range in all parts, and after testing the tensile strength, the ultimate tensile strength is similar to the ultimate tensile strength of the base material in all the specimens, also the fracture point was generated in the base materials of all the samples. In the result of the impact test, impact absorbed energy of the Keyhole shape area is turned up very high, and also shown up the effect about four times of fracture toughness comparing the base material. In the last result of observing the fractographs, typical ductile fraction is shown in each weld metal, and in the basic material, the dimple fraction is shown. The weld metals are shown that there are no other developments of any new chemical compound during the fastness melting and solidification.

Sheet aluminum alloys used in manufacturing of machine structures for transportation show the difference of crack growth speed depending on thickness under the constant fatigue stress condition. The referred thickness effect is a major fatigue failure property of sheet aluminum alloys. In this work, we identified the thickness effect in fatigue test of thick plate and thin plate of Al 2024-T3 alloy under the constant fatigue stress condition, and presented the thickness effect to a correlative equation, $U_{i}^{equ}=f(R_t)$ which is determined by the shape factor, thickness ratio, $R_t$ and the loading factor, equivalent effective stress intensity ratio depending on thickness, $U_{i}^{equ}$. And we analyzed quantitatively the crack growth retardation behavior in thin plate compared to thick plate by the thickness effect using ${\Delta}K$ conversion method. We obtained such values as decrement of thickness(DoT), decrement of stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K$ (DoS) and identified the relation between them to present the nature of thickness effect in this work.

Fuel cells have the potential of providing several times higher energy storage densities than those possible using current state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries, but current energy density of fuel cell system is not better than that of lithium-ion batteries. To achieve the high energy density, volume and weight of fuel cell system need to be reduced by miniaturizing system components such as stack, fuel tank, and balance-of-plant. In this paper, the thin flexible PCB (Printed circuit board) is used as a current collector to reduce the stack volume. Two end plates are made from light weight aluminum alloy plate. The plate surface is wholly oxidized through the anodizing treatment for electrical insulation. The opening rate of cathode plate hole is optimized through unit cell performance measurement of various opening rates. The performances are measured at room temperature and ambient pressure condition without any repulsive air supply. The active area of MEA is 10.08 $cm^2$ and active area per a unit cell is 1.68 $cm^2$. The peak power density is about 210 mW/$cm^2$ and the air-breathing planar stack of 2 Wis achieved as a small volume of 18 cc.
High-performance research reactors require fuel that operates at high specific power to high fission density, but at relatively low temperatures. Research reactor fuels are designed for efficient heat rejection, and are composed of assemblies of thin-plates clad in aluminum alloy. The development of low-enriched fuels to replace high-enriched fuels for these reactors requires a substantially increased uranium density in the fuel to offset the decrease in enrichment. Very few fuel phases have been identified that have the required combination of very-high uranium density and stable fuel behavior at high burnup. U-Mo alloys represent the best known tradeoff in these properties. Testing of aluminum matrix U-Mo aluminum matrix dispersion fuel revealed a pattern of breakaway swelling behavior at intermediate burnup, related to the formation of a molybdenum stabilized high aluminum intermetallic phase that forms during irradiation. In the case of monolithic fuel, this issue was addressed by eliminating, as much as possible, the interfacial area between U-Mo and aluminum. Based on scoping irradiation test data, a fuel plate system composed of solid U-10Mo fuel meat, a zirconium diffusion barrier, and Al6061 cladding was selected for development. Developmental testing of this fuel system indicates that it meets core criteria for fuel qualification, including stable and predictable swelling behavior, mechanical integrity to high burnup, and geometric stability. In addition, the fuel exhibits robust behavior during power-cooling mismatch events under irradiation at high power.

Acoustic response control of a corner-pinned plate using piezoelectric wafers was studied, both theoretically and experimentally Three different sizes of aluminum alloy plates were used and available ball joints were employed to hold the plate at the four corners. The plate with the largest aspect ratio showed the largest and most clear responses to the acoustic excitation in the range of frequencies (0∼200 Hz), and sound pressure levels (80∼100 dB) as predicted. The reduction of the acoustic response of the plate by piezoelectric actuator was very significant, more than expected, but abatement of the sound transmission through the plate was only slightly altered by the piezoelectric actuator. This work is an original work extending earlier work with doors excited by acoustic fields. The important difference is the used of ball joints to simulate the joints.
Fatigue life and crack retardation behavior after penetration were experimentally examined using surface pre-cracked specimens of aluminium alloy 5083. The Wheeler model retardation parameter was used successfully to predict crack growth behavior after penetration. By using a crack propagation rule, the change in crack shape after penetration can be evaluated quantitatively. Advanced, waveform-based acoustic emission (AE) techniques have been successfully used to evaluate signal characteristics obtained form fatigue crack propagation and penetratin behavior in 6061 aluminum plate with surface crack under fatigue stress. Surface defects in the structural members are apt to be origins of fatigue crack growth, which may cause serious failure of the whole structure. The nondestructive analysis on the crack growth and penetration from these defects may, therefore, be one of the most important subjects on the reliability of the leak before break (LBB) design. The goal of the present study is to determine if different sources of the AE could be identified by characteristics of the waveforms produced from the crack growth and penetration. AE signals detected in four stages were found to have different signal per stage. With analysis of waveform and power spectrum in 6061 aluminum alloys with a surface crack, it is found to be capabilities on real-time monitoring for the crack propagation and penetration behavior of various damages and defects in structural members.

There are a variety of heat exchangers used in automobiles, such as shell and tube heat exchangers, double tube heat exchangers, and plate heat exchangers. Most of them are water-cooled to prevent engine overheating. There have been reports of corrosion damage to these heat exchangers due to continuous wetting caused by external temperature differences, road pollutants, and snow removal. In addition, galvanic corrosion, which occurs when two dissimilar materials come into contact, has been identified as a major cause. In this study, corrosion characteristics and galvanic corrosion behavior of Al alloy (AA3003, AA4045 and AA7072) used in automobile heat exchangers were analyzed. Effective clad materials for heat exchanger tubes and fins were also evaluated. It was found that AA7072 should be applied as the cladding material for fin AA3003 and that AA4045 was suitable as a cladding material for tube AA3003 because this clad materials application was the most effective clad design to delay the occurrence of pinhole in the tube. Main factors influencing galvanic corrosion dissolution were found to be galvanic corrosion potential difference and galvanic corrosion current density.

The weight reduction of the transportations has become an important technical subject Al and Al alloys, especially Al 5052 alloys have been being applied as door materials for automobile. One of the most widely known car weight-reduction methods is to use light and corrosion-resistant aluminum alloys. However, because of high electrical and thermal conductivity and a low melting point, it is difficult to obtain good weld quality when working with the aluminum alloys. Also, Pulse MIG welding is the typical aluminum welding process, but it is difficult to apply to the thin plate, because of melt-through and humping-bead. In order to enhance weld quality, welding parameters should be considered in optimizing the welding process. In this experiment, Al 5052 sheets were used as specimens, and these materials were welded by adopting new Cold Metal Transfer (CMT) pulse process. The proper welding conditions such as welding current, welding speed, torch angle $50^{\circ}$ and gap 0~1mm are determined by tensile test and bead shape. Through this study, range of welding current are confirmed from 100A to 120A. And, the range of welding speed is confirmed from 1.2m/min to 1.5m/min.
