  • Nanoscale Al powder with thin layer of alumina was produced by Wire Electric Explosion (WEE) process. Spark-Plasma Sintering (SPS) was performed for the produced powder to confirm the effectiveness of SPS like so-called 'surface-cleaning effect' and so on. Crystallite size and alumina content of produced powder varied with the ratio of input energy to sublimation energy of Al wire ($e/e_s$): Increase in ($e/e_s$) resulted in the decrease of crystallite size and the increase of alumina content. Shrinkage curve during SPS process showed that the oxide surface layer could not be destroyed near the melting point of Al. It implied that there was not enough or no spark-plasma effect during SPS for Al/Alumina powder.

  • Recently, the use of high-tech ceramic parts in functional electronic parts, automobile parts and semiconductor equipment parts is increasing. These ceramics materials are required to have high reproducibility, reliability, large size and complex shapes. The researchers initiated the work to develop a new shaping method called gel casting, which allows high performance ceramic materials with a complex shape to be produced. The manufacturing process parameters of gel casting include uniform mixing of the initiator, bubble removal, and slip injection. In this study, we analyzed the dispersion and gelation characteristics according to the change in the additive content of the alumina slurry in the gel casting process. The alumina slurry for gel casting was prepared by mixing a solvent, a monomer and a dispersant through a ball mill. Alumina powder and a gelation initiator were added to the mixed solution, and ball milling was performed for 24 hours. A viscosity of 6,435 cps and a stable zeta potential value were obtained under the conditions of alumina powder content of 55 vol% and dispersant 2.0 wt%. After curing for 12 hours by adding aps 0.1wt%, TEMED 0.2wt%, and Monomer 3, 5wt%, it was possible to separate from the molding cup, confirming that the gelation was completed.

  • High purity alumina has been extracted form low grade Korean alunite. Alunite ore was treated by 15% $NH_4OH$ solution, followed by 10% $H_2SO_4$ leaching and metallic impurities such as Fe and Ti were removed by solvent extraction method. Alumina prepared by the extraction process was 99.9% in purity. Hot Petroleum Drying Method has been employed for the preparation of uniformly fine alumina powder, using chemical reagent aluminum sulfate and ammonium aluminum sulfate extrated from Korea alunite. The sinterability of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method was shown to be improved in comparison with the one treated by other methods such as ball milling method, but dry pressing was difficult due to the agglomeration of calcined powder. The best slip of alumina powder prepared by Hot Petroleum Drying Method contained a lower soild content than the one treated by other methods. The alumina body formed by soild and drain casting with the former alumina powder showed a higher sintered density.

  • Densification and grain growth behavior of bimodal size distributed alumina powder mixtures were investigated as a function of amount of coarse alumina powder. The specimens which contained coarse alumina powder for 60to 80wt% showed the highest green density. The amount of shrinkage of sintered specimen lineraly decreased with the increase of coarse alumina powder up to the content that showed the highest green density and then further addition of coarse alumina powder led to drastic decrease of shrinkage of specimen. Especially crack-like void were concurrently revealed in the sintered body with addition of coarse alumina powder above 60wt% When the sintering temperature increased up to 1650$^{\circ}C$ the amount of shrinkage of specimen linearly decreased and the grain growth were also retarded with increase of coarse lauminia powder.

  • The dependence of the IR optical properties of PMMA/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite on the alumina content was investigated in the wavelength range of $3500-2800cm^{-1}$. The samples were prepared via emulsion polymerization technique using oleic acid as a coupling agent. Grafting density calculations were carried out by means of elemental analysis CHN to yield the best coupling agent content. FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of a chemical bond between aluminum oxide and oleic acid. The outcomes of XRD analyses showed the presence of cubic gamma aluminum oxide in the nanocomposite, in contrast to the amorphous nature of PMMA. TEM images showed the core-shell morphology of the particles other than pristine PMMA. Optical constants of the nanocomposite were calculated based on FTIR spectra and the Kramers-Kronig equations. The presence of nano alumina modified some of the optical indexes in IR region.

  • Alumina matrix composites reinforced with up to 20vol% of aligned SiC whiskers were fabricated by tape casting and hot pressing. Alumina composited with randomly distribution SiC whiskers were also fabricated in order to investigate the effect of whisker alignment on properties of the composites. XRD and optical microscopy were used to examine the whisker orientation. The fracture toughness increased with increasing whisker content, and it was higher in the direction normal to the tape casting direction.

  • Pyrophyllite, which has low impurities, was used in the synthesis of mullite to decrease the glass phase, which can be formed from impurities such as alkali and alkali earth elemetns present in raw materials. But, as pyrophyllite has less alumina content than other aluminosilicate materials such as kaolin, more alumina sources were needed in the synthesis of mullite. In other to investigate the effect of particle size of alumina sources on the mullitization of pyrophyllite, aluminum hydrate gel and activated alumina were used. When activated alumina, which has large particle size, was added to pyrophyllite, mullitization was not fully accomplished regardless of temprature. In the case of aluminum hydrate gel, which has small particle size, the maximum yield of mullite was about 90.3% at 1700$^{\circ}C$, and grain size of mullite was larter than the case of activated alumina was added.

  • The effect of Al content and heating rate on the sintering behavior, microstructure, and mechanical properties of reaction bonded alumina (RBAO) was investigated. As the heating rate became slower a critical Al content which could be added to RBAO increased. The weight gain and linear shrinkage of RBAO containing of 55 vol% Al were 28% and 6.5%, respectively. The relative density of RBAO decreased from 96 to 94%, as the amount of Al increased from 15 to 55 vol%. The hardness of RBAO increased from 17.8 to 19.9 GPa and the bending strength enhanced from 370 to 570 MPa, as the amount of Al increased from 15 to 55 vol%. On the other hand, the wear rate of RBAO degraded from 6.7 to 3.39$\times$10-5 $\textrm{mm}^2$/kg and the fracture toughness decreased from 4.1 to 3.6 MPa.m1/2, as the amount of Al increased from 15 to 55 vol%. Fracture modes were shown to the mixed mode of inter/transgranular. However, transgranular fracture was dominant with increasing the content of Al.

  • Alumina tapes, having various ratios of alumina to alumina+binder+plasticizer (a/(a+o)) and binder to binder+plasticizer(b/(b+p)), were prepared by the tape casting method. The tapes were thermocompressed varying the thermocompression parameters such as temperature, pressure, and duration time. Among the parameters, the pressure was the most influential to the tape packing density. The packing density varied in two different ways depending on the a/(a+o) ratio. For the tapes having low a/(a+o) ratio, a saturation density was reached by applying very a low pressure of 1 MPa. For tapes with high a/(a+o), on the contrary, the saturation density was obtained at a relatively high pressure. These different responses to the pressure are attributed to the fact that the rearrangement of alumina particles by the pressure becomes easy as an organic content in the tapes is high.

  • In this study, alumina plates 9~25 μm in size were used as thermal fillers, and epoxy resin was used as a polymer matrix. Oriented alumina plate/epoxy composites were prepared using a rolling method. The effect of ordering alumina plates increased with alumina plate size. The thermal conductivity and flexural strength of the composites were investigated. The horizontal thermal conductivity of the oriented composite was significantly higher than the vertical thermal conductivity. The horizontal thermal conductivity of the 75 wt% alumina content was 8.78 W/mk, although the vertical thermal conductivity was 1.04 W/mk. Ordering of the alumina plate using a rolling method significantly improved the thermal conductivity in the horizontal direction. The flexural strengths of the ordered alumina/epoxy composites prepared at different curing temperatures were measured.
