Human eyes and skin are frequently exposed to chemicals accidentally or on purpose due to their external location. Therefore, chemicals are required to undergo the evaluation of the ocular and dermal irritancy for their safe handling and use before release into the market. Draize rabbit eye and skin irritation test developed in 1944, has been a gold standard test which was enlisted as OECD TG 404 and OECD TG 405 but it has been criticized with respect to animal welfare due to invasive and cruel procedure. To replace it, diverse alternatives have been developed: (i) For Draize eye irritation test, organotypic assay, in vitro cytotoxicity-based method, in chemico tests, in silico prediction model, and 3D reconstructed human cornealike epithelium (RhCE); (ii) For Draize skin irritation test, in vitro cytotoxicity-based cell model, and 3D reconstructed human epidermis models (RhE). Of these, RhCE and RhE models are getting spotlight as a promising alternative with a wide applicability domain covering cosmetics and personal care products. In this review, we overviewed the current alternatives to Draize test with a focus on 3D human epithelium models to provide an insight into advancing and widening their utility.

The liquefaction of soil occurs when a soil loses strength and stiffness because of applied stress, such as an earthquake or other changes in stress conditions that result in a loss of cohesion. Hence, a method for improving the strength of liquefiable soil needs to be developed. Many techniques have been presented for their possible applications to mitigate liquefiable soil. Recently, alternative methods using biopolymers (such as xanthan gum, guar gum, and gellan gum), nontraditional additives, have been introduced to stabilize fine-grained soils. However, no studies have been done on the use of carrageenan as a biopolymer for soil improvement. Due to of its rheological and chemical structure, carrageenan may have the potential for use as a biopolymer for soil improvement. This research aims to investigate the effect of adding carrageenan on the soil strength of treated liquefiable soil. The biopolymers used for comparison are carrageenan (as a novel biopolymer), xanthan gum, and guar gum. Then, sand samples were made in cylindrical molds (5 cm × 10 cm) by the dry mixing method. The amount of each biopolymer was 1%, 3%, and 5% of the total sample volume with a moisture content of 20%, and the samples were cured for seven days. In terms of observing the effect of temperature on the carrageenan-treated soil, several samples were prepared with dry sand that was heated in an oven at various temperatures (i.e., 20℃ to 75℃) before mixing. The samples were tested with the direct shear test, UCS test, and SEM test. It can increase the cohesion value of liquefiable soil by 22% to 60% compared to untreated soil. It also made the characteristics of the liquefiable increase by 60% to 92% from very loose sandy soil (i.e., ϕ=29°) to very dense sandy soil. Carrageenan was also shown to have a significant effect on the compressive strength and to exceed the liquefaction limit. Based on the results, carrageenan was found to have the potential for use as an alternative biopolymer.
A series of wind tunnel test were conducted on Korean high speed train model to understand the flow physics around the vehicle related to the aerodynamic drag. For the wind tunnel test on high-speed ground vehicle, a moving ground simulation is necessary to predict the aerodynamic drag accurately. So, the models were tested in three wind tunnels with various ground simulation facility including moving belt ground plane system and tangential blowing system. The test results including measured aerodynamic drag and flow visualization showed that a tangential blowing method can be an alternative ground simulation method in short time using conventional wind tunnel.
Deflections of jointed concrete pavements at test road are monitored during 48 hours. And methods of calibration with respect to curling deflections are suggested. Relations between deflection ratio of center to joint at test time and deflection ratio of center at test time to center at reference time are described by regression. From deflections at test time, deflections transformed to reference time which gives minimum deflections in a day are estimated through regression curves and concluded to propose as a alternative method of curling calibration with more data accumulation.

An alternative technique (or the numerical solution of Fredholm integral equations of second kind is presented. The approximate solution is obtained by fitting the data in mixed form at knots in the region of the problem. To decrease the error in the numerical solution, cubic B-spline functions which are twice continuously differentiable at knots are employed as basis function. For a given example, the results of this technique are compared with those of Moment method employing pulse functions for basis function and delta functions for test function and found to br in good agreement.

Flow boiling heat transfer coefficients (HTCs) of R22, R134a, R407C, and R410A were measured for a horizontal plain tube. The test section was made of a copper tube of 8.8mm inner diameter and 1000mm length respectively. The refrigerant was heated by passing hot water through an annulus surrounding the test section. All tests were performed at a fixed refrigerant saturation temperature of $5^{\circ}C$ with mass fluxes of 100~300 kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s. HTCs were measured by two methods: the direct wall temperature measurement method and the indirect Wilson plot method. Experimental results showed that the Wilson plot method was affected greatly by the external test conditions and yielded inconsistent results. For the mass flux of 100kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s, HTCs were almost constant regardless of the quality for a given refrigerant HTCs of R134a and R407C were similar to those of R22 while those of R410A were 60% higher than those of R22. For the mass fluxes of 200 and 300kg/$m^2$,/TEX>s, HTCs of R407C were almost the same as those of R22, while HTCs of R134a and R410A were 12-13% and 20~23% higher than those of R22 respectively. For pure refrigerant, Shah\`s correlation yielded a good agreement with the measured data both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Most of the fossil power plants firing lower grade coals are challenged with maintaining good combustion conditions while maximizing generation and minimizing emissions. In many cases significant derate, availability losses and increase in unburned carbon levels can be attributed to poor combustion conditions as a result of poorly controlled local fuel and air distribution within the boiler furnace. The poor combustion conditions are directly related to the gas flow deviation in upper furnace and convection tube-bank but a less reported issue related to in large-scale oppose wall fired boilers. In order to develop a on-line combustion monitoring system and suggest an alternative heat flux estimation method at tube bank, which is very useful information for boiler design tool and blower optimizing system, field test was conducted at operating power boiler. During the field test the exhaust gases' temperature and tube metal temperature were monitored by using a spatially distributed sensors grid which located in the boiler's high temperature vestibule region. At these locations. the flue gas flow is still significantly stratified, and air in-leakage is minimal which enables tracing of poor combustion zones to specific burners and over-fire air ports. Test results showed that the flue gas monitoring method is more proper than metal temperature distribution monitoring for real time combustion monitoring because tube metal temp. distribution monitoring method is related to so many variables such as flue gas, internal flow unbalance, spray etc., Heat flux estimation at the tube bank with flue gas temp. and metal temp. data can be alternative method when tube drilling type sensor can't able to use.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of hypertension-related nursing intervention programs and their effects on systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Methods: Fifteen studies were selected from four databases (Korean studies, Riss4U, RICHIS, and JKAN) published as of 2009. They were analyzed by meta-analysis method. The selected studies contained a control group with pre-test and post-test design, measured blood pressure as a dependent variable, and used a reported statistical value for blood pressure to measure the size of effects. Results: The hypertension-related nursing intervention programs were relatively effective in lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, although they were more efficient to decrease diastolic pressure. Among the hypertension-related intervention programs, complementary and alternative therapies were more effective in lowering blood pressure compared to lifestyle change intervention. Conclusions: To acquire substantial data of intervention effects, and complementary and alternative therapy, subjects in pre-hypertensive stage, and elderly people, better industrial and scholastic research methods need to be developed for future research. Further studies are needed to establish complementary and alternative therapies. Studies with different group of participants and studies using effective research design are in need as well.
The necessity of effective and economical improvement for soft ground is required more and more as mountains form 70% of country. The soft ground improvement methods for ocean development are sand compaction pile method, displacement method are applied to the soft ground improvement from ocean development pre-loading method, air pressure method, well point method, pack drain method, quicklime pile method etc. Among them, the sand compaction pile method, has many problems such as the economical problem on importing materials due to the lack of sand and destroying the nature while collecting sand. To replace the sand with other alternative materials, a study on the bottom ash compaction pile method because the bottom ash has the similar engineering properties with sand. Therefore, in this study, after compose the complex soil with a replacement rate of 10~80% and a large direct shear test, shear test, consolidation test with replacement rates of bottom ash are performed to estimate whether its shear and consolidation characteristics are suitable for the alternative material of compaction pile method. As a result of test, Shear Strength Parameters tend to be increased in accordance with the increase of replacement ratio of bottom compaction pile, and Settlement Reduction Factor and $t_{90}$ tend to be decreased.

This paper deals with the hybrid structural test technique which has been introduced and studied currently in Korea. In this study, a Mini-MOST system which was developed as a part of NEES research was modified and improved to reduce the total simulation time to half of the original system. Using the proposed system together with the 2 dimensional small steel frame specimen, the validity and efficiency of the hybrid test technique is investigated. Even though the hybrid test has been developed as an alternative to the shaking table test and has been studied and applied for a long time in several countries, no attempt has been made to compare it directly with the shaking table test. Therefore, in this study, the hybrid test results are compared with those of the shaking table test as well as with a numerical simulation for the verification of hybrid test. From the comparison and analysis of the test results, it is concluded that the hybrid test can simulate the actual seismic behavior of structural systems very accurately and it can be a good alternative to the shaking table test.
