국내외의 모유 수유 관련 보완대체 의학(Complementary and Alternative Medicine) 연구 동향 고찰 (A Review on Complementary and Alternative Medicine of Breastfeeding)

  • Purpose: Many breastfeeding women have used complementary and alternative medicine, but the guideline for lactation does not exist on complementary medicine. This study is to investigate efficacy and safety of complementary and alternative medicine in breastfeeding. Methods: We searched for papers which had breastfeeding, complementary medicine, acupuncture and herb in the pubmed, scopus site and Korean journals. Results: 38 papers were found. Acupuncture could have the efficacy on hypogalatia and mastitis. Compound herb therapy had effect on hypogalactia, but none of herbs were investigated for safety all except for St John's wort. So more clinical trials about herbs would be needed. Massage and the other complementary therapies would be helpful for breastfeeding mother. Conclusion: Acupuncture could be a good treatment for hypogalactia and inflammation of the breast. For making guidelines on complementary and alternative medicine during lactation, more research will be needed.

  • 화석연료가 고갈되어 감에 따라 사람들은 이를 대처할 수 있는 대체에너지를 찾기 시작했다. 이 대체 에너지는 환경 친화적이며 재생 가능해야 된다는 단서가 붙는데 그 중 가장 많은 주목을 받은 것이 수소이다. 현재 수소는 다양한 방법으로 생산되고 있는데 생물학적으로 수소를 생산하는 방법이 가장 환경 친화적인 방법으로 인식되고 있다. 그러나 아직 생물학적으로 수소를 생산하는 방법은 아직 상업화하기엔 경쟁력이 많이 부족하기 때문에 많은 연구자들이 바이오 수소 생산 방법과 그 생산성 및 생산수율을 높이기 위하여 노력하고 있다. 본 고에서는 생물학적 수소생산의 다양한 개발 접근방법들의 진행 추이를 정리하였다.

환경영향평가 협의 시 대체서식지 조성을 위한 가이드라인 마련 (A Study on the Guidelines for Creating Alternative Habitats through Environmental Impact Assessment)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a guideline that can be used as a standard for consultation and review by environmental impact assessment consultation and review practitioner to enhance the practical effectiveness of creating alternative habitats. The consultation stage of environmental impact assessment was significantly divided into 1) preparation of draft environmental impact assessment reports and gathering of consensus thereon, 2) preparation of environmental impact assessment reports and consultation thereon, 3) follow-up survey of environmental impacts(under construction) and 4) follow-up survey of environmental impacts(in operation). And it was suggested that the procedures of creating alternative habitat by each consultation stage were linked in order of 1) planning, 2) designing, 3) construction, and 4) post-monitoring and maintenance. The basic principles were also proposed for each stage of consultation on environmental impact assessment and procedure for the creation of alternate habitats. Then, issues and methods to be reviewed by the consulting agency and review agency of environmental impact assessment were presented in detail. The guideline of this study provides important information not only to environmental impact assessment consultation and review practitioner, but also to developers and environmental impact assessment agents who plan, construct, and manage alternative habitats.

비수분산 특수 제형 화장품에 대한 방부력 시험 비교 연구 (Comparison of Preservative Efficacy Tests for Water Non-dispersible Cosmetic Formulations)

  • 본 연구에서는 수분산 제형에 사용되는 방부력 시험법과 PCPC (personal care products council) 가이드라인 대체시험법, direct contact membrane method 및 surface mold test 사이의 차이점을 연구하여 비수분산 특수 제형 방부력 시험 진행 시 고려되어야 하는 사항에 대해 알아보고자 한다. 우리는 스틱 및 프레스트 파우더에에 대한 시험법 비교 시 대체 시험법을 사용했을 때 개선된 수준으로 방부력 시험 결과를 확인할 수 있었다. 하지만 W/S 에멀젼과 루즈 파우더의 경우, 기존 시험법이나 대체 시험법간 결과 개선 차이가 크지 않았음을 확인하였다. 각각의 제품에 대해 방부시스템 존재 시와 부재 시 결과들을 확인했을 때, 시험법별로 차이가 발생함을 알 수 있었다. 결과적으로, 비수분산 특수 제형에 대한 방부력을 측정할 때 기존 및 대체 시험법을 병행 사용하여 개선된 수준의 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 또한 본 연구를 통해 스틱 및 프레스 파우더의 경우, 소비자 사용방식을 적용하는 방식의 방부력 시험법을 적용하였을 때, 보다 더 유효성 있는 결과를 도출해 낼 수 있었다.

Combination of isoproterenol and length oscillations in relaxing porcine airway smooth muscles

  • Treatments for asthma are largely pharmaceutical, with some therapies also utilising alternative breathing techniques. The objective of both medical and alternative methods is to relax contracted airway smooth muscle (ASM). In normal subjects, tidal breathing- and deep inspiration-oscillations are believed to have a bronchodilatory effect. Similarly, application of length oscillations to isolated, contracted ASM also elicits muscle relaxation. As a means of investigating more-effective alternative treatment methods for contracted airways, we analyse the combined effects of bronchodilators and length oscillations on isolated, contracted ASM. The contractile state of the muscle tissue prior to treatment is of primary interest. Thereafter, the effect of applying a combination of small superimposed length oscillations with tidal breathing-like oscillations to ASM is studied alone and in combination with a common bronchodilator, isoproterenol (ISO). This work suggests that relaxation of isolated, contracted ASM following application of combined oscillations and ISO is larger than treatments of either combined oscillations or ISO alone. Further, the observed oscillation-associated relaxation is found to be amplitude- rather than frequency-dependent. This study gives additional insight into the role of oscillations and bronchodilators on contracted airways.

  • Effective and quick methods that are easy to carry out even by hand, or easy to be programmed by hand-held calculators are needed for assessing the sizes of contrasts of unreplicated $2^P$ factorial designs. Moreover, they have the advantage to use the original numerical measurements which makes the analysis easier to explain. Basically, Lenth (1989) is one of the most familiar of such quick and powerful methods. Later on, Aboukalam (2001) proposes under constant effects an alternative sophisticated method to Lenth's method. The proposed method is the supreme from two considerable powers. The first utmost indicates less inflation deficiency while the other utmost indicates less shrinkage deficiency. Also under constant effects, Al-Shiha (2006) introduces an alternative quick method which is less shrinkage deficiency while the inflation deficiency is the same. If effects are random, Aboukalam (2005) introduces an alternative quick method in which the first power is favored as long as the second power is within a small margin. In the spirit of quickness and fixed effects, this article adds another method which is supreme from the two considerable powers. The method is based on a one step of the scale-part of a suggested M-estimate for location. Explicitly, we suggest adapting the skipped median (ASKM) estimate. Critical values of ASKM-method, for several sample sizes often used, are empirically computed.

고혈압 간호중재의 혈압하강 효과에 대한 메타분석 (Meta-analysis of Hypertension-related Nursing Intervention Programs)

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to examine the characteristics of hypertension-related nursing intervention programs and their effects on systolic and diastolic blood pressure. Methods: Fifteen studies were selected from four databases (Korean studies, Riss4U, RICHIS, and JKAN) published as of 2009. They were analyzed by meta-analysis method. The selected studies contained a control group with pre-test and post-test design, measured blood pressure as a dependent variable, and used a reported statistical value for blood pressure to measure the size of effects. Results: The hypertension-related nursing intervention programs were relatively effective in lowering both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, although they were more efficient to decrease diastolic pressure. Among the hypertension-related intervention programs, complementary and alternative therapies were more effective in lowering blood pressure compared to lifestyle change intervention. Conclusions: To acquire substantial data of intervention effects, and complementary and alternative therapy, subjects in pre-hypertensive stage, and elderly people, better industrial and scholastic research methods need to be developed for future research. Further studies are needed to establish complementary and alternative therapies. Studies with different group of participants and studies using effective research design are in need as well.

중학생들의 대기압에 대한 개념을 향상시키기 위한 실험방법 개선안 (New Experimental Methods to Improve on the Understandings of Atmospheric Pressure for Middle School Students)

  • 본 연구는 중학교 교과서의 대기압 단원을 학습하였을 때 학생들의 개념유형이 어떻게 변하는지 조사하고, 대체개념을 개선해나갈 수 있는 실험방법을 모색하는데 목적이 있다. 중학교 2학년을 대상으로 ‘대기압’ 에 관한 사전 개념을 질문지와 면담을 통하여 조사하고 두 집단으로 나누어 6차 교육과정의 중학교 2학년 과학교과서 중 8종의 교과서에 나오는 대기압에 관한 실험을 모두 한 집단과 교과서 외의 제안실험을 한 집단으로 구분하여 2주 동안 실시하였다. 두 집단간의 수업방식은 차별화하지 않았고 실험소재만 다르게 하였으며, 기압단원 학습 일주일 후 동일한 질문지를 사용하여 개념변화를 알아보았다. 결론적으로 학생들의 기압에 대한 대체개념이 학습 후에도 쉽게 변화되지 않았지만, 제안실험을 한 집단이 기압에 대한 개념형성이 효과적으로 나타난 점으로 보아 대체개념을 개선시킬 수 있는 다양한 학습방법과 과학적 개념획득을 위한 실험손재가 지속적으로 연구되어져야 할 필요성이 있다.

Phototoxicity: Its Mechanism and Animal Alternative Test Methods

  • The skin exposure to solar irradiation and photoreactive xenobiotics may produce abnormal skin reaction, phototoxicity. Phototoxicity is an acute light-induced response, which occurs when photoreacive chemicals are activated by solar lights and transformed into products cytotoxic against the skin cells. Multifarious symptoms of phototoxicity are identified, skin irritation, erythema, pruritis, and edema that are similar to those of the exaggerated sunburn. Diverse organic chemicals, especially drugs, are known to induce phototoxicity, which is probably from the common possession of UV-absorbing benzene or heterocyclic rings in their molecular structures. Both UVB (290~320 nm) and UVA (320~400 nm) are responsible for the manifestation of phototoxicity. Absorption of photons and absorbed energy (hv) by photoactive chemicals results in molecular changes or generates reactive oxygen species and depending on the way how endogenous molecules are affected by phototoxicants, mechanisms of phototoxcity is categorized into two modes of action: Direct when unstable species from excited state directly react with the endogenous molecules, and indirect when endogeneous molecules react with secondary photoproducts. In order to identify phototoxic potential of a chemical, various test methods have been introduced. Focus is given to animal alternative test methods, i.e., in vitro, and in chemico assays as well as in vivo. 3T3 neutral red uptake assay, erythrocyte photohemolysis test, and phototoxicity test using human 3-dimensional (3D) epidermis model are examples of in vitro assays. In chemico methods evaluate the generation of reactive oxygen species or DNA strand break activity employing plasmid for chemicals, or drugs with phototoxic potential.

The Eukaryote Alternative: Advantages of Using Yeasts in Place of Bacteria in Microbial Biosensor Development

  • The relationship between Man and yeast has been a successful and enduring one. The characteristics of yeast have made it an ideal tool in scientific research and as such, it has been used extensively. In this review some of the advantages, methods and applications of yeasts in the biosensor field are outlined. In doing so, we propose a eukaryotic alternative to the current battery of bacteria-based microbial biosensors.
