  • This paper presents product level considerations for multichip packaging as a cost effective alternative to single chip packaging in the design and manufacture of mobile telephony products. Important aspects include component functionality and complexity, acquisition and logistics costs, product modularity and integration. Multichip packaging offers unique solutions and significant system level cost savings in many applications including RF modules, digital matrix functions and product options such as security, data storage, voice recognition, etc.

  • A new model which is able to understand the mechanical behavior is developed, based on investigating the theoretical background for design compressive strength in strut-and-tie model. A proposed model is an alternative method for engineers through analyzing the merits and demerits of the conventional models

  • The AASHTO seismic base isolation design approach has been reviewed and modified to fit the nonlinear static analysis procedure for reinforced concrete structures in a simpler way. Such an adaptation may be possible for the fact that the reinforced concrete under development of damage due to earthquake loading keeps softening to result in period shifting toward longer side. The validity of the proposed approach was verified by applying it to the examples presented in the current state-of-the-practice approach.

  • The state-of-the-practice design expressions currently used for the calculation of shear strength of concrete columns due to circular transverse hoop steel were reviewed. From this, it was found that the single valued constant effective section area of shear steel to be conservative in some degree that concrete sections built in non-seismic regions. A general expression as n alternative was suggested considering the wide range of section configurations. The theoretical prediction was validated through the experimental observations.

  • This paper presents a possible methodology to develop a facility layout using practical constraints. Those factors considered in the system are not only used for the evaluation of layout but also for the search to solution on the design process. Necessarily, this method develops practically feasible solutions with less iterations since the infeasible alternative layouts are rejected by the practical constraints before evolutions. The suggested method is implemented in FORTRAN for experimental purposes and the results are discussed in detail.

  • A modified perturbation method is proposed to optimize the beam pattern of thinned microphone arrays. Both microphone spacing and array weight are iteratively adjusted via successive perturbation to achieve an optimum beam pattern in a Dolph Chebyshev sense. To improve the sidelobe performance, an alternative perturbation with respect to microphone spacing and array weight is implemented. Also, a linear space-tapering is employed in the perturbation process. It is demonstrated that the proposed approaches successfully yield sidelobe performances comparable to that of a normal array. Computer simulation results are presented.

  • Within LG.Philips Displays electron gun assembly different grid alignment methods are used. Besides the commonly used mandrel alignment of grids (Inner Reference System, IRS), also a unique Outer Reference System (ORS) is used as grid alignment method in high-end gun assembly. This alignment method combines alignment accuracy with maximum electron optical design freedom and maximum flexibility in electron gun production.

  • Fuel cell systems offer high energy efficiencies for transportation application. In addition, they can use alcohols and alternative fuels as the fuel, while producing little or no noxious emissions. Fuel cell-powered vehicles should be competitive in performance characteristics and in capital and maintenance costs with internal combustion engine vehicles. The objective of the present study is to design a fuelcell/battery powered vehicles to analyze technical feasibity.

  • In recent years, significant advances in computers and communication technologies have made multimedia services feasible. As a result, various queuing models and cost models on architecture and data placement for multimedia server have been proposed. However, these analytical techniques use only probabilistic models to represent the behavior of a system, and then they have several limitations like accuracy. Simulation is a viable alternative to analytical model. It avoids many of the limitations associated with analytical techniques, allowing for more precise representation of system attributes like workload in program code. In this paper, we propose a simulation test bed that can evaluate performance of real-time multimedia server by using simulation model.

  • As an alternative to the classic linear detector which only assumes noise variance, a new robust detector with noise variance estimation censoring input signals over AWGN is proposed. The results demonstrate that analytic detection probability matches the simulation results for the linear detector and that the new robust detector shows better performance than the linear detector when the number of samples increases.
