  • Taguchi parameter design is an approach to reducing performance variation of quality characteristic value in products and processes. Taguchi has used signal-to-noise(SN) ratio to achieve the appropriate set of operating conditions where variability around target is low in the Taguchi parameter design. Many statisticians criticize the Taguchi techniques of analysis, particularly those based on SN ratio. In this paper we propose a substantially simpler optimization procedure for parameter design without resorting to SN ratio.

  • Alternative computational scheme is presented fur reliability based optimal design using a modified advanced first order second moment (AFOSH) method. Both design variables and design parameters are considered as random variables about their nominal values. Each probability constraint is transformed into a sub -optimization problem and then is resolved with the modified Hasofer- Lind-Rackwitz-Fiessler (HL-RF) method for computational efficiency and convergence. A method of design sensitivity analysis for probability constraint is presented and tested through simple examples. The suggested method is examined by solving several examples and the results are compared with those of other methods.

  • Characteristics of a Modified regenerative cycle gas turbine has been investigated. In the cycle, the turbine expansion is divided into two parts and the regenerator locates between them. Two types of mechanical design are assumed: two-shaft and single-shaft. In particular, optimal pressure ratio division between the high and low pressure turbines is evaluated for the single shaft configuration. The part load analyses have been carried out with the aid of off-design models. In addition to the general fuel only control, a variable speed control is assumed as the part load operating strategy of the single shaft configuration. Obvious advantage with the alternative cycle is observed in the variable speed operation of the single shaft design.

  • The ever increasing demand for enhanced competitiveness of engineered products requires "designing-in-quality" strategies that can effectively and efficiently incorporate concepts of uncertainty and quality into design. Multi-attribute utility function is commonly used to represent the decision-maker's preference on multiple design attributes under conditions of uncertainty and risk. One of the major issues in implementing this approach concerns the generation of appropriate utility function, especially in a complex engineering design environment. Typically, the decision maker's preference is revealed through lottery questions rather than being structured on the deductive reasoning to reflect the nonlinear tradeoffs among the attributes. The use of such intuitive procedures can lead to inexact preference information that may result in inaccuracy and rank reversal problems. This paper presents an alternative procedure based on the pair-wise comparisons between design alternatives towards a consistent preference presentation in assessing multiplicative utility function. The effectiveness of the overall procedures is tested with the aid of an injection-molding process design for a capacitor can and the results are discussed.

  • This paper describes the preliminary design procedure for the hybrid propulsion system. For a given mission defined by velocity increment, the design of a polyethylene/LOX hybrid rocket was implemented. In addition, Seven-cluster multi-port fuel-grain was considered. After determining the system size including the combustion chamber, the performance parameters such as specific impulse, thrust, characteristic velocity, and thrust coefficient can be predicted by using empirical regression rate correlation, though most of preliminary design code assume constant regression rate. The results of the performance prediction indicated that besides the widely used HTPB/LOX, polyethylene/LOX hybrid motor can be a viable alternative to the more widely used SRMs.

  • The ecological environment planning begins with the awareness that human are a part of ecological system. A recent issue, LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Substantiality), will be defined as a consumption trend which values highly health, social justice, economy, self development and sustainable life. LOHAS aims at coexistence with human and nature, pursue a sustainable development and it could be an alternative for SHS(Sick House Syndrome). This research tries to show the case analysis in coexistence in human and nature which LOHAS aims at. The design space applied the concept of LOHAS(renewing, reusing and recycling) will maintain healthy lives of the present and the future. In this context, it tries to solve the problems in architectural space and show the new possibilities in it

  • This paper proposed a multi-objective optimization method for building energy system design using primary energy consumption and initial cost. The designing of building energy systems is a complex task, because life cycle cost and efficiency of building are determined by decisions of engineer during the early stage of design. Therefore, methods such as pareto analysis that can generate various alternatives for decision making are necessary. In this study, the optimization is performed using the NSGAII and case study was carried out for feasibility of the proposed method. As a result, alternative solutions can be obtained for the optimal building energy system design.

  • In this study, We examine closely the capacity spectrum method which a kind of displacement-based method evaluated by displacement of structure as an alternative to the load-based analysis method. The displacement-based method can easily review the strength of structure, seismic performance, ductility. Seismic performance by using capacity spectrum method is divided into design response spectrum and capacity spectrum. We can diagram design response spectrum by deciding the design seismic factor depending on performance target, site classification, seismic level, return period as UBC-97. Capacity spectrum is a load-displacement curve obtained by Push-over analysis considering the geometric parameter and the material parameter. We execute the seismic performance evaluation by using the capacity spectrum method to reinforced concrete pier which has been seismic design. As a result, We confirmed that there is a yield point and a ultimate point close by design response spectrum of UBC-97.

  • The Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) is a ground-based aircraft navigation system and is considered as an infrastructure that ensures resilient aircraft navigation capability during the event of a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) outage. The main problem of DME as a GNSS back up is a poor positioning accuracy that often reaches over 100 m. In this paper, a novel approach of applying deep reinforcement learning to a DME pulse design is introduced to improve the DME distance measuring accuracy. This method is designed to develop multipath-resistant DME pulses that comply with current DME specifications. In the research, a Markov Decision Process (MDP) for DME pulse design is set using pulse shape requirements and a timing error. Based on the designed MDP, we created an Environment called PulseEnv, which allows the agent representing a DME pulse shape to explore continuous space using the Soft Actor Critical (SAC) reinforcement learning algorithm.

  • Exploring on two major questions: 'Why do we feel more love for certain objects?' and 'How can design use this knowledge to realize design sustainability?', this article presents an alternative way of approaching the problem of design sustainability from the perspective that our relationships with design objects are of an extended mode of social relations. Recent discussions on design sustainability have transformed the notion of the problem by seeing it as a problem of our basic perception of design objects and our relationships with them. In this light, I propose that design sustainability could not be achieved solely by approaching from a mechanistic perspective, but by re-framing the way we see and relate things around us and by supporting our changes and actions to move forward a more sustainable notion of our relationships with the objects. As a way to realize design sustainability, I propose that design should involve story-making quality that supports our initiatives to build more affectional relations with objects by seeing the objects as entities of communication that tell stories of us, thus reflect our identities and meanings of our lives. Proceeding on the exploration of the subject, I present some of conceptual outlines in forms of an image diary, an interplay-able furniture unit, and a performance instruction that suggest a way for a special story-making process and thus a stronger emotional tie with the objects.
