Perspective Primary Teachers' Explanations of Liquid-State Phenomena (액체 상태에서의 현상에 대한 예비 초등교사의 설명)

  • The purposes of this study were to investigate perspective teachers' conceptions of liquid-state and get implications for the direction of science curriculum or professional development. The instrument was composed of seven questions focusing on aspects of liquid-state phenomena. The results showed that the participants have various alternative concepts about liquid-state. The problem revealed in almost every question was their macroscopic explanations for the phenomena. In addition, it appeared that the participants seemed to understand phenomena in terminology level, but they didn't know basic reasons or fundamental concepts about the phenomena. It is required to change the curriculum or instructional methods in secondary school and teacher education programs to anchor the scientific concepts on molecular or microscopic level.

  • For the purpose of extending the fields of biological preconceptual studies, the conceptions of plant classification, which have not been researched on them in korea, were selected and a questionnaire were administered to a sample of a total of 965 students at elementary and secondary school levels of korea. Many elementary school students have the alternative conceptions that plants are not alive. The misconceptions in plant classification are partly caused by the uncertainty of biological terms. To serve the teachers, who have difficulty in teaching them, the preceeding results are summarised with Composition the misconception maps.

Elementary Preservice Teachers' Conceptions on Molt and Metamorphosis of Insect (초등예비교사들의 곤충의 탈피와 변태에 관한 개념)

  • Elementary preservice teachers' understanding about the insect molt and metamorphosis was examined. Data were collected through the paper-pencil test of 448 junior students at a National University of Education. The instrument used was developed by Son(2003) and modified for the test. The results are as follows: First, Only 3.1$\%$ of students had a scientific concept on the molt periods in the insect life cycle. Students had an alternative conception that molt occurs either only in the larval period (29.9$\%$) or only in the period from pupa to adult (22.3$\%$). The percentage of the students thinking that molt occurs in the period from larva to pupa was low. Second, 98$\%$ of students stated that molt has to do with the larval growth, but 39.1$\%$ of students had an alternative conception that molt occurs after the larval growth at each instar. 25.1$\%$ had a conception that molt is related with the larval growth, but did not show any further understanding. Third, most students understood the correct meaning of metamorphosis. 34..2$\%$ of students had an alternative conception that metamorphosis occurs only in the period changing from pupa to adult, and only a few thought that it occurs in the period from larva to pupa. 24.8$\%$ of students had a scientific concept on the periods in which metamorphosis occurs. Fourth, some students understood the hatching process as molt in the sense that the egg shell is taken off (21.0$\%$), and as metamorphosis in terms of the appearance change from egg to larva (25.0$\%$). Fifth, 35.5$\%$ of students selected bees as an insect of incomplete metamorphosis, and 35.3$\%$ responded 'I have no idea', showing that they had poor understanding about the insect life cycle.

Conceptual Change via Contrasting Everyday and Scientifically Idealized Contexts

  • This article presents a theoretical model for conceptual change that relates cognitive conflict and the role of context. The model assumes that students derive alternative conceptions from everyday contexts while scientific concepts presume an idealized context, and hence, that the source of cognitive conflict results from the difference between the two contexts. Test results and analysis of the model are presented by applying it in a class studying the inertial motion of bodies. The subjects are 37 seventh grade boys.

Korean Fifteen-Year-Olds' Alternative Conceptions on the Greenhouse Effect Revealed in PISA Test Results (PISA 검사 결과에서 드러난 만15세 한국 학생들의 온실효과에 대한 대안적 개념)

  • This study investigated Korean fifteen-year-olds' (mis)conceptions on the greenhouse effect based on the PISA results. Based on previous studies on students' ideas about the greenhouse effect, Korean students'understanding of the natural factors and human-induced factors of the greenhouse effect were analyzed. Students' misconceptions about causes of the greenhouse effect were also examined. In addition to CO2, Students mentioned CFCs, atmospheric pollution, water vapor and methane as greenhouse gases. Many students indicated that the greenhouse effect and ozone depletion have a causal relationship. Teaching implications of the misconceptions were also discussed.

A Study of High School Students' Conceptions of Mixing Phenomena Related to Dissolution and Diffusion (용해.확산과 관련된 혼합현상에 대한 고등학생들의 개념 유형 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the types of conceptions of mixing phenomena related to dissolution and diffusion in high school students. The subjects of the investigation consisted of 108 students who took chemistry I course at 11th grade and 29 students who took chemistry II course at 12th grade. For this study, it was found that the many students had the alternative conception that chalk didn't dissolve in water because chalk was a nonpolar material. Most of the students understood the phenomena which carbon tetrachloride and water will not mix as the attraction conception. But many of the other students understood the phenomenon as characteristic of the materials such as difference of density. Many of the students understood the phenomenon of mixing ethanol and water constantly as ‘Attraction conception'. The phenomenon which is mixed ink and water was just accepted by the most students as the spreading of ink in water without understanding the reason of mixing. The phenomena of mixing iodine and carbon tetrachloride was understood as ‘Space conception' or ‘Attraction conception'. It could be inferred that the diverse alternative conceptions related to dissolution and diffusion phenomena were generated by the absence of entropy concept. Therefore, the explanations of science textbooks related to dissolution and diffusion phenomena need to change for students to understand them correctly.

  • Size/scale is a central idea in the science curriculum, providing explanations for various phenomena. However, few studies have been conducted to explore student understanding of this concept and to suggest instructional approaches in scientific contexts. In contrast, there have been more studies in mathematics, regarding the use of number lines to relate the nature of numbers to operation and representation of magnitude. In order to better understand variations in student conceptions of size/scale in scientific contexts and explain learning difficulties including alternative conceptions, this study suggests an approach that links mathematics with the analysis of student conceptions of size/scale, i.e. the analysis of mathematical structure and reasoning for a number line. In addition, data ranging from high school to college students facilitate the interpretation of conceptual complexity in terms of mathematical development of a number line. In this sense, findings from this study better explain the following by mathematical reasoning: (1) varied student conceptions, (2) key aspects of each conception, and (3) potential cognitive dimensions interpreting the size/scale concepts. Results of this study help us to understand the troublesomeness of learning size/scale and provide a direction for developing curriculum and instruction for better understanding.

  • This paper reviews the relationships between diverse ecological design strategies and competing conceptions of ecological approach in place making. It focuses conceptual trends of what we categorize a building "green" and outlines a social constructive perspective on the development of sustainable architecture. This study classifies seven logics of ecological design-eco-technical, eco-aesthetical, eco-social, eco-medical, eco-renewable, eco-cultural, eco-central - which have their roots in competing philosophies of environmentalism. In my analysis of the logics concerning sustainable architecture, the adapted and incorporated technology from high-tech to low-tech levels is a key issue. These points lead us to propose a way that each logic configures the technological approaches and alternative visions of sustainable places. This paper discusses the implications of the competent nature of plural ecological design perspectives for architectural education, practice, and researches.

  • Environmental friendly architecture'is undeniably a verb important and global paradigm. Beyond energy-conscious design and building with renewable materials, environmental friendly architecture also deals with recyclable and found forms and images. Concepts of sustainable building lead to the analysis of all currently available options for building optimization. Tomorrow's framework for information and communication processing, as well as automation and process optimization. The purpose of this study is to define the conceptions about 'environmental friendly Architecture' and to discover new alternative architecture in the end of the 20th century.

Earth Science Pre service Teachers' Ideas about the Earth on the Ontological Categories (지구에 대한 예비 지구과학 교사들의 존재론적 사고)

  • This study is aimed at analyzing earth conception the nine pre service teachers who are majoring in earth science education and classifying a special feature from the ontological categories. Open ended questionnaires and semi structured interviews which meant to contribute to identifying ontological categories of concepts involving study area were designed. Pre service teachers' ontological category about earth conception most showed to dynamic and proto process. In the results show that many pre service teachers recognize simply the conception to a material, a condition and a conversion of the state changing. Most of the pre service teachers show their intermediate understanding level about the earth inner construction according to the analyzed results of the drawing tasks and interviews. The main alternative conceptions show them through a definition of the plate, a wording definition between lithosphere and asthenosphere, a feature of the plate boundary, a heat convection in the earth inner, the earth inner heat source, the earth inner structure, a physical feature of the mantle.
