  • This study was aimed to understand the structures of preservice secondary school teachers' alternative conceptions on radioactive isotopes in the interior of earth. The structure of their conceptions were analyzed by the suggestions of Niaz (1988) based on the Lakatosian frameworks. The survey was carried out on a group of seventeen students who were major in science education. The research method was open-ended written questionnaire. The results of this study show that students had apparent alternative conceptions. The high temperature and pressure' explanation for radioactive decay in earth's interior had most import effects on their alternative conceptions. It was also intended to survey their conceptional change by our teaching strategies of the philosophy of science in order to construct science concepts.

  • In this paper I will undertake three tasks: first, to identify the difference between John Rawls's liberal conception of liberty and Will Kymlicka's; second, to briefly examine the problems with liberal conception of liberty; finally, to propose a certain alternative that will be able to make liberal conception of liberty more meaningful In Kymlicka's view, Rawls seems to fail to make the best defence of freedom of choice because he wants to explain of individual freedom on the basis of Kant's moral theory about liberty. Kymlicka thinks that it is not a desirable way of defending liberal conception of liberty. According to his liberal theory, Rawls's defence of freedom of choice might make us think that we should have our freedom of choice for its own sake because freedom is the most valuable in the world. So Kymlicka wants to provide stronger argument to defend freedom of choice in liberalism. He insists that it is our projects and tasks that are most important things in our lives. Furthermore, he argues that we should conceive our freedom of choice as a precondition for pursuing those projects and practices that are valued for our good lives. Now I want to look at two concepts of liberty in liberalism with Rawls's theory and Kymlicaka's. In this paper, I shall look at criticisms of the liberal account of freedom of choice. These would give us a certain chance for understanding true freedom.

  • This purpose of this study was to analyze high school students' alternative conceptions and understanding levels about rocks, crust, plate tectonics and interior of the Earth. Data were collected through surveys, drawing assignments, and interviews. A total of 158 high school students in the first grade were involved in this study. The results showed that students have lots of major alternative conceptions which are meaning and forming process of rock, distinction of continental crust and ocean crust, formation and disappearance of ocean crust, movement of plate, continental drift, activities of volcano and earthquake. Physical and chemical characteristics, including mantle and core state could be found through analyzing from drawings.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate students' mental models and alternative conceptions about the Earth's interior. A total of 126 10th grade students participated in this study. They were requested to draw Earth's interior tasks and were interviewed about their mental models. A coding frame was designed to classify the students' drawings and interview responses, and then a four step cognitive model was established based on the frame of coding. In addition, the relationship of mental models was compared in terms of students' gender, and the type of alternative conceptions was analysed. The research results showed a variety of alternative conceptions on the interior of the Earth. The classified mental models showed naive mental model (11%), unstable mental model (81%), conceptual model (8%), while 69% of all sampled students accounted for the static process. The gender difference in the cognitive model showed no statistical significance.

  • In this paper I attempt to survey on the theories of observation and analysis of mathematics classroom discourse. In order to discuss applicability of the theories I look at preservice teachers' observation of mathe-matics classroom and teachers' conception of mathematics lesson. In examining reports from preservice teachers' I identify how they understand mathematics lesson and how the theories can enhance their understanding. Not surprisingly, there are lots of obstacles for teachers to practice mathe-matics educational theories. 1 find some features of their efforts or attempts to overcome the obstacles in an attempt to gain insights into alternative ways of concep-tualizing the methods of observation and analysis through the interview and the discussion with teachers.

  • Modem society has been complicated and diverse, and then various paradigms coexist. We can see Postmodernism moving in the flows of modern architecture. Therefore looming large is the Fold architecture that can surmount the limit of design in Postmodernism and Deconstruction and suits to the modern culture as an architectural alternative. So I believe this research can make us perceive the streams of modern interior space by considering the features and meanings of Fold conception which has been noticeable in the overall architecture and culture since the middle of 1990's with analyzing and defining atypical organic Fold characteristics appearing in modern interior since 2000, and also predict the next changing direction.

  • A new chiral stationary phase (CSP 2) derived from cyclohexylamide of (S)-naproxen has been prepared. CSP 2 has shown greater enantioselectivities for the two enantiomers of N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-a-amino esters and amides than the CSP derived from 3,5-dimethylanilide of (S)-naproxen (CSP 1) as expected from the reciprocity conception of chiral recognition. However, CSP 2 has been found to be worse than CSP 1 in resolving N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)-a-arylalkylamines, supporting the previously proposed chiral recognition mechanism which utilizes the 3,5-dimethylphenyl group of CSP 1 as an alternative π-basic interaction site. In addition, CSP 2 has been found to be reasonably good in resolving the two enantiomers of a variety of other π-acidic racemates.

  • This study started with concerns for corporate philanthropy that is emerging as an alternative for resource development of social work field in Korea. However, corporate philanthropy is not operating as an accomplished conception yet, but as a type of the practical discourse. Therefore corporate philanthropy is interpreted a multiplicity of meanings is used ambiguously in social work practice field. This is because theoretical reviews on the conceptual thinking of corporate philanthropy are scant and is in need of empirical inquires into conceptual perception of social workers who uses this concept as a stakeholder to corporate philanthropy. After analyzing the data using Q methodology, the result shows that social workers' major perception patterns on corporate philanthropy perspective consists of three patterns; Win-Win Partnership, Social-obligation, Strategic Materialism. These patterns are classified by the dimension of 'classical view', 'socio-economic view', 'modern view' and 'philanthrophic view'. This result will attribute to develop theories, social work practice program and social worker' training program related corporate philanthropy. And to give facilities for lucid communication among practice and theory in social work field as it materializes the explicit conception of corporate philanthropy that is understood ambiguously in Korea.

  • This research took an interpretive approach to investigate professional mathematicians' conception of mathematics, particularly focusing on their beliefs about the nature of mathematics as a discipline, and the relation between the discipline and themselves as knowers. The analysis shows that the professional mathematicians consider mathematics as human practice. For mathematicians, mathematics as a product is considered as a crystalization of practice that emerges in the dialogical relation between the discipline and its practitioners. This dialogical nature of mathematics suggests that professional mathematicians consider mathematics not as isolated fixed knowledge but as something they are playfully engaged with. The results of this research extend our understanding of what mathematics is and provide an alternative perspective on mathematics to make the learning of mathematics more accessible by dismantling the myth of the rationalist pure objectivity in mathematics.

  • Following the lead of Isaiah Berlin, many liberals favor a negative conception of liberty because it limits the amount of interference and coercion that the state has in individual's lives. Such moves leave individuals to place value on their life choices or step back and revise them if desired. It is one thing, however, to argue that modern republicanism characterized by liberty as non-domination contains an alternative conception of liberty.
