Lexical and Semantic Incongruities between the Lexicons of English and Korean

  • Pustejovsky (1995) rekindled debate on the dual problems of how to represent lexical meaning and on the information that is to be encoded in a lexicon. For natural language processing such as machine translation, these are important issues. When a lexical-conceptual mismatch occurs in translation of corresponding words from two different languages, the appropriate representation of their meanings is very important. This paper proposes a new formalism for representing lexical entries by first analysing observable mismatches in comparable pairs of nouns, verbs, and adjectives in English and Korean. Inherent mis-interpretations and mis-readings in each pair are identified. Then, concept theories such as those presented by Ganter and Wille (1996) and Priss (1998) are extended in order to reflect the cognitivist view that meaning resides in concept, and also to incorporate the propositions of the so-called ‘multiple inheritance’system. An alternative to the formalism of Pustejovsky (1995) and Pollard & Sag (1994) is then proposed. Finally, representative examples of lexical mismatches are analysed using the new model.

  • Cultural needs of human have grown enormously. Consumer trend and individual taste have become more individualistic and diversified. Efforts to improve the quality of life have changed the concept of lift space as well as the concept of interior life supplies. Products are no longer standardized and produced in massive scale, thus a shift of value has risen. Damages done by the economical development have made consumers take interests in products that are more natural and in harmony with human beings. It is a tendency that wooden materials are becoming a preference as a specific alternative. There is a great social change with a new paradigm like this. Considering the change, we propose a new vision and activation plan on design development of wooden products through specific and practical studies by the system of educational and industrial cooperation which is an organic association system for developing human resources of educational system and producing profits of industry. From it, we can expect great effects as a competitive design of coming future.

하구환경의 생태적 설계 (Ecological Design of Estuarine Environment)

  • An Ecocomplex is proposed for ecological design of the estuarine environment of Han River, which is designed upon an alternative mamagement concept of estuarine environment. The concept reveals interrelationships among estuary, delta region and urban inland with inputs/outputs and feedbacks among them. The Ecocomplex emphasizes an integration of wastewater treatment with aquaculture, agriculture and recreation, and carries out ecological treatment, recycling, and harvest processes. A module of wastewater treatment pond system is employed in the Ecocomplex, which treats a flow of 3,786 ㎥/day and is composed of a four-facultative-pond series. Treatment ponds stabilize wastewater discharged from the urban area, and concurrently produce algae for commercial or recreational fish farming. Effluent from treatment and fish ponds is reused for agricultural production. Through the waste-algae-fish-vegetable-recreation processes, wastewater from the urban settlement is recycled back to the urban ecosystem. This resource-conserving design approach can maintain a sustainable urban ecosystem, managing an estuarine environment more naturally, healthly, and economically.

  • The ecological environment planning begins with the awareness that human are a part of ecological system. A recent issue, LOHAS (Lifestyle of Health and Substantiality), will be defined as a consumption trend which values highly health, social justice, economy, self development and sustainable life. LOHAS aims at coexistence with human and nature, pursue a sustainable development and it could be an alternative for SHS(Sick House Syndrome). This research tries to show the case analysis in coexistence in human and nature which LOHAS aims at. The design space applied the concept of LOHAS(renewing, reusing and recycling) will maintain healthy lives of the present and the future.   • Nutrition through food is a very important life support activity for humans in maintaining a healthy life. Nevertheless, there is no absolute safe food. In the Modern Food Law, risk analysis developed as an alternative to food safety. However, the Korean Food Sanitation Act introduced risk analysis, but many problems have arisen because the right risk concept is not reflected. To solve the problem, it is necessary to reflect the exact concept of the risk. According to our Food Sanitation Act, risks are used as risk, hazard, and harmful according to the context. The study pointed out these problems and suggested a variety of comparative legal and realistic alternatives.

Feasibility study for wrap-buoy assisted wet-tow and stepwise installation of mono-bucket foundation for 15 MW offshore wind turbine

  • An innovative concept for wet-transportation and stepwise installation of mono-bucket foundation for 15 MW offshore wind turbine is proposed. Case studies for two different mono-bucket and wrap-buoy dimensions are conducted and their hydrostatic and hydrodynamic performances are compared for both wet-towing and lowering operations. The intact stability and transient responses are analyzed in detail for various stages of lowering operation. Wave-induced motion statistics during wet tow in sea state 4 (highest operational window) are checked. The proposed concept is found to be feasible and can be an alternative cost-effective solution without using heavy-lift crane vessel in practice.

델파이 기법을 활용한 기독교대안학교의 미래 역량교육에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Future Competency Education of Christian Alternative Schools Using Delphi Analysis Techniques)

  • 연구 목적 : 본 연구의 목적은 기독교대안학교가 공통적으로 지향하는 역량교육의 목적이 무엇이고 그러한 교육을 통해 길러주고자 하는 역량의 요소가 무엇인지를 합의적 의사결정 방법인 델파이 방법을 통해 제시하는 것이다. 연구 내용 및 방법 : 역량은 '무엇인가를 할 수 있는 능력'을 의미하며, 역량기반 교육은 '역량의 개념을 기반으로 한 교육의 과정'을 의미한다. 일반교육에서 역량기반 교육은 보편적으로 시행되고 있다. 그러나 기독교교육의 영역에서는 아직까지 역량기반 교육이 활발하게 이루어지지 못하고 있다. 특히 기독교대안학교에서 공통적으로 어떠한 역량을 길러주는 교육을 하고 있는지에 대하여 학문적으로 정립되지 않고 있다. 기독교교육에서 역량기반 교육과 관련된 선행연구는 대부분 기독교 대학에서 실시하고 있는 역량기반 교육과 관련되어 있다. 기독교대안학교에서의 역량과 관련된 연구는 주로 교사들의 전문성이나 기독교대안학교의 이념과 관련된 연구들이다. 즉 기독교대안학교에 다니는 학생들에게 어떠한 역량을 길러주는 교육을 하고 있는지에 대한 구체적인 연구는 거의 없다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 델파이 분석 기법을 활용하여 기독교 대안학교에서 실시하고 있는 역량중심 교육의 실체가 무엇인지 파악하고자 한다. 특히 기독교대안학교들이 공통적으로 가지고 있는 역량교육의 목표가 무엇이고 역량의 요소는 무엇인지 찾아내서 향후 기독교대안학교의 질적인 성장에 기여하고자 한다. 결론 및 제언 : 본 연구를 통해 기독교대안학교에서 추구하는 역량교육의 목표 4개와 역량요소 20개를 발견하였다. 역량교육의 목표와 요소를 유형화하면 하나님과의 관계, 자신과의 관계, 타인 및 세상과의 관계로 구분할 수 있다. 결론적으로 기독교대안학교가 특수성을 기반으로 하는 기독교교육의 보편적 목적을 추구하는 교육을 해야 하며 교육과정에 역량교육의 목표와 요소를 반영하여야 할 것을 제안하였다.

  • The concept of social capital has recently been highlighted in most fields of social science because social capital is believed to be an alternative of market and government failures. However, social capital is of high ambiguity that hinders in conceptualizing and modeling that can differs from the premises, such as whether social capital lies in individual actors or collective substances, or whether social networks are functioning by rationality or emotion. This study therefore tries to examine the concept of social capital and suggest 6 types of it following by the anthropologic concept of 'reciprocity' as well as to provide fruitful discussions on the introduction of social capital variables to System Dynamics modeling of sustainable development. Conclusively, the introduction of social capital to the integration models of environment-economy-society should be based on strongly understanding the social networks, individual identities, and local particularities of the relevant localities in order to enhance the structural validity and applicability of sustainable development models in System Dynamics.

  • In conceptual design of engineering devices, a designer decomposes a required function into sub-functions, so-called functional decomposition, using a kind of functional knowledge representing achievement relations among functions. However, such knowledge about functionality of engineering devices is usually left implicit because each designer possesses it. Even if such knowledge is found in documents, it is often scattered around technical domains and lacks consistency. Aiming at capturing such functional knowledge explicitly and sharing it in design teams, we discuss its systematic description based on functional ontologies which provide common concepts for its consistent and generic description. We propose a new concept named “was of achievement” as a key concept for capturing such functional knowledge. Categorization of typical representations of the knowledge and its organization as is-a hierarchies are also discussed. The generic concepts representing functionality of a device in the functional knowledge are provided by the functional concept ontology, which makes the functional knowledge consistent and applicable to other domains. We also discuss development of a design supporting system using the systematized knowledge, called a functional was server. It helps human designers redesign an existing engineering device by providing a wide range of alternative ways of achievement of the required function in a manner suitable for the viewpoint of each designer and then facilitates innovative design.

A Feasibility Review for an Uneven Baseline Basis Minimal Ballast Ship

  • Although there are many kinds of advanced ballast water management systems, pioneering studies for ballast-water free ship and minimal ballast water ship concepts are in progress. In this study, the existing alternatives of ballast water are reviewed and a new design concept is studied on the basis of the existing bulk carrier hull form. To develop a new design alternative which has minimal ballast for ballast water discharge free operation, the new concept should have technical feasibilities that are related to the role of the ballast water, berth access, loading constraints, etc. For this purpose, a simplified systems engineering basis design approach is adopted using a business model as the system analysis and control tool. To check the performance feasibility of the new concept, ship resistance performance is reviewed based on a model scale ship resistance performance analysis.
