  • The sign language is a method of communication for deaf person. For sign communication, sign language and manual alphabet are used continuously. In this paper is proposed a system which recognize Korean sign language(KSL) and Korean manual alphabet(KMA) continuously. For recognizing KSL and KMA, basic elements for sign language, namely, the 14 hand directions, 23 hand postures, and 14 hand orientations are used. At first, this system recognize current motion state using speed and change of speed in motion by state automata. Using state, basic element classifiers using Fuzzy Min-Max Neural Network and Fuzzy Rule are executed. Meaning of signed gesture is selected by using basic elements which was recognized.

  • A contex-freegammar is defined over the Korean Alphabet which produces linear stings conforming to the sound structure of the language. Methods are then given for transforming these strings into a context-dependent syllabified two dimensional form Also the practical problems in developing d Korean line printer and suggestions for further research are presented.

  • Classification criteria for Korean alphabet (Hangul) fonts are undeveloped in comparison to numerical classification systems for Roman alphabet fonts. This study finds important features that distinguish typeface styles in order to help develop numerical criteria for Hangul font classification. We find features that determine the characteristics of the two different styles using a convolutional neural network to create a model that analyzes the learned filters as well as distinguishes between serif and sans-serif styles.

  • An interactive Hangul input method using the numeric phone keypad, which is applicable for mobile devices is introduced. In the proposed method, user only selects the corresponding keys by single tapping, for the alphabet of Korean letter which is desired to enter. The interface generates the subset of eligible letters for the key sequence, then the user selects the desired letter in the set. Such an interactive approach transforms the text entry interface into a multi-level interactive letter-oriented style, from the preexisting passive and single-level alphabet-oriented interface. The annoyance of key-operations, the major disadvantage of the previous methods, derived from multi-tap to clear the ambiguity of multi-assigned alphabets for the Hangul automata, can be eliminated permanently, while the additional letter selection procedure to finalize the desired letter is essential. Also the complexity of Hangul text entry is reduced since all letters can be compounded from basic alphabet selection of the writing sequence order. The advantage and disadvantage of the proposed method are analyzed through comparing with pre-existing method by experiments.

  • Many people think that sign language is only for people who are deaf and cannot speak, but of course it is necessary for people who want to talk with them. One of the biggest challenges in ASL(American Sign Language) alphabet recognition is the high inter-class similarities and high intra-class variance. In this paper, we proposed an architecture that can overcome these two problems, which performs similarity learning to reduces inter-class similarities and intra-class variance between images. The proposed architecture consists of the same convolutional neural network with a double configuration that shares parameters (weights and biases) and also applies the Keras API to reduce similarity learning and variance through this pathway. The similarity learning results the use of the dual CNN shows that the accuracy is improved by reducing the similarity and variability between classes by not including the poor results of the two classes.

  • This paper describes an efficient coding method for Ko-rean characters (alphabet) using a three-state transition graph. Par-allel hangul Dynamic Coding Method (PHDCM) compresses about 3.5 bits per Korean character compared with other coding techinques. When we ran the method on a MasPar machine it achieved a 49.314-fold speedup with 64 processors having 10 million orean characters

  • The Purpose of this paper is to gather pairs of heteronyms in modern Korean and transcribe them in the IPA and the Roman alphabet in order to propose that all of them should be differentiated in Hanngul orthography. More than a quarter of the whole Korean vocabulary consists of words with a long vowel and the number of minimal pairs distinguished only by the chroneme reaches nearly ten thousand (i.e. twenty thousand words). The letter h syllable-finally is used here to represent the long vowel in Romanization except the vowel '으‘[?:] which is transcribed by doubling the letter u (i.e. uu). Another factor bringing forth lots of heteronyms in Korean is the lack of full indication as to the non-automatic reinforcement in the initial consonant of a word (or a morpheme) when preceded by another within a phrase (or a word). These reinforced word-initial consonants are written with the letter c and an apostrophe (like c'g- , c'd- , c'b-, c's-, c'j-) in Romanization here. The reinforced morpheme-initial consonant within a word is written with the letters k t, p, ss and cz for ㄲ, ㄸ, ㅃ, ㅆ and ㅉ sounds respectively. The contrasted pronunciations of pairs of heteronyms beginning with ㅅ /s/sup h// and ㅆ /s/ sounds are transcribed here for exemplification.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate predictors concerning preschoolers' ability to read words, in terms of their sub-skills of alphabet knowledge, phonological awareness, and phonological processing. Fourteen literacy sub-tests and three types of reading tasks were administered to 289 kindergartners aged 4 to 6 in Busan. The main results are as follows. Sub-skills that predicted reading ability varied with children's age. Irrespective of children's age groups, knowledge of consonant names and digit naming speed commonly explained the reading of real words. In contrast, skills of syllable deletion and phoneme substitution and knowledge of alphabet composition principles were related to only 4-year-olds' reading skills. Exclusively included was digit memory in predicting 5-year-olds' reading abilities, and knowledge of vowel sounds in 6-year-olds' reading skills. The type of reading task also influenced reading ability. A few common variables such as knowledge of consonant names and vowel sounds, digit naming speed, and phoneme substitution skill explained all types of word reading. Syllable counting skills, however, had predictive value only for the reading of real words. Phoneme insertion skills and digit memory had predictive value for the reading of pseudo words and low frequency letters. Likewise, knowledge of consonant sounds and vowel stroke-adding principles were significant only for the reading of low frequency letters.

  • In Korean documents, there are diverse spellings of transliterated foreign loanwords. This fact diminishes the performance of information retrieval systems in that a foreign word can be recognized differently, which is to say, as two or several different words. Thus, information retrieval systems require preprocessing to correct nonstandard loanword spellings prior to searching and recognizing corresponding equivalent words. This paper proposes a method that improves precision and processing efficiency using the Korean alphabet's viable prefix, which prunes a virtual tree from which candidate loanwords are created.
