This paper presents the design, construction and performance of ground treatment to support road embankment on refuse landfill. Long-term settlement of refuse landfill is analysised by Sower and Yen/scanlon. As a results of site test, predicting settlement excess the allowable settlement and ultimate bearing capacity is not satisfied. The effectiveness of DDR(Deep Dynamic Replacement) is monitered by field tests (SPT, PBT, PMT) before, during and after construction of the stone columns. The ultimate bearing capacity for reinforced landfill by stone columns obtained from the in-situ test results has been compared with the existing theories. In municipal wastes landfill, settlement after treatment using stone column is satisfied to allowable residual settlement. Therefore, long-term stability can be gain in these cases.

The tilting-train being operated in pre-existing rail road has a different running mechanism compared to currently operated trains. Therefore, it needs to investigate the evaluation of the track performance, the stability of the tilting-train in operating condition, and the stability of the roadbed. In this study, when the tilting train is operated in the rail joint with the allowable velocity limited by the track performance and the stability of the tilting-train, the settlement of the roadbed has been evaluated by using numerical analysis. The loading on the ground surface generated by the operating tilting-train generates the settlement of the roadbed. The settlement induced by the tilting-train loading has been compared to the allowable settlement and the factor of safety defined by the ratio of the allowable settlement to the settlement generated by the applied loading is evaluated.
Pull-out load tests were performed on a CPR (Compaction grouting compound Pile with Reinforce) test pile, with skin friction being evaluated by the yield load and allowable bearing capacity after analyzing load-displacement curves and load-settlement curves. Results of the CPR test piles analyzed from the load-displacement curves show that the yield load and allowable bearing capacity of the large-diameter CPR test pile were about 1.4 times larger than that of the small-diameter pile. Results of the load-settlement curves reveal that the allowable bearing capacity of the CPR test pile with diameter of D500 was 1.2~2.1 times greater than that of the pile with diameter of D400. However, the allowable bearing capacity calculated using Fuller's analysis differed substantially from that determined using the P (Pull-out load) - S (Settlement) and log P - log S curves. Therefore, calculation of the allowable bearing capacity using Fuller's analysis is shown to be inappropriate.

The mechanically stabilized earth wall (MSEW) of the IPM bridge is an important structure that constitutes the bridge, and supports the horizontal earth pressure and approach slab. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully analyze the settlement of MSEW of the IPM bridge. This study examined the settlement according to the height and ground stiffness on the MSEW on the IPM Bridge. According to the design guideline, the IPM Bridge (2016) was designed to have a height of 4.0 ~ 10.0m and the elastic settlement was calculated. The base area and the grounding pressure of the MSE wall increased linearly with the height, and the elastic settlement also increased linearly. In addition, the stiffness of the foundations satisfying the allowable settlement of the approach slab is a N value of 35 or more. The settlement of finite element analysis was estimated to be smaller than the elastic settlement, and the stiffness of the foundation ground satisfied the allowable settlement of the approach slab above N value of 20. Because the elastic settlement of the MSEW of the IPM Bridge was overestimated, it will be necessary to examine it carefully by finite element analysis.

The allowable bearing capacity of a pile, the most important factor in stability estimation, is determined by applying safety factor to the ultimate load or yield load. There are several but contradictory methods available in current design codes to estimate the allowable bearing capacity and the safety factor. This paper analyzes load-settlement curves obtained from 19 static load tests measured from 11 sites. At all tests, the load is applied until apparent failure is observed. The validity of the ultimate and yield load estimation method and load caculated from the settlement criterion is investigated through comparison with the measured data. In addition, a new procedure to estimate allowable load and safety factor is proposed. Additional data from field static load tests, such as those incorporated in this study, are needed to more reliably apply the proposed method in design practice.
In the present study damage behavior of resilient sleepers on concrete ballasts is analyzed. Cracks of resilient sleepers in a railway track system are concentrated on inside of blocks to which the tie bars are connected. Finite element analysis is performed by dividing a block into the straight section and the curved section according to the load condition of the resilient sleeper, and limited the interpretation within the range of resilience. In addition, the value of stress obtained from the interpretation was compared with the allowable stress of concrete to determine the safety. According to the result of numerical analysis, compared with the stress before unequal settlement, the tensile stress of the inside of the block increased significantly after the settlement considering the entire block, and the tensile stress of this part exceeded the allowable stress of concrete, so was undesirable in terms of safety. In reality, the arrangement of tensile stiffeners inside blocks connected to tie bars is improper in the design of resilient sleepers, and when unequal settlement occurs, tensile stress increases on this part and consequently causes cracking damage. It is necessary to arrange wire meshes or tensile reinforcing bars in a structurally safe way to reinforce the inside of blocks on which cracks are concentrated.
Foundation settlements(settlements at the embankment surface and ground) has been evaluating to satisfy the strict allowable residual settlement level from the start of the construction of Gyungbu high speed railway. This is because both embankment and ground settlement could be important to minimize the residual settlement after the construction of concrete track. Ground settlement is caused by the increase of effective stress resulting from embankment. The causes of embankment settlement could be come from different sources, for example, the increase of effective stress, rainfall, creep behaviors. Based on the field measured data, this paper analysed the settlement of ground and embankment settlement. The biggest settlement at the embankment surface was 9.7mm during 246days at the STA 000k922.5. The calculated settlement of embankment itself was 8.6mm at the same places. These results conclude that the compressive settlement of embankment could not negligible.

In order to expand facility agriculture and reduce greenhouse construction costs in reclaimed land, a greenhouse foundation method that satisfies economic feasibility and structural safety at the same time is required. As an alternative, the allowable bearing capacity and settlement were reviewed when the DCM(Deep cement mixing) method was applied among the soft ground reinforcement methods. To examine the applicability of the greenhouse foundation, the allowable bearing capacity and settlement were calculated by applying the theory of Terzaghi, Meyerhof, Hansen, and Schmertmann. In case of the diameter of 800mm and the width and length of the foundation of 4m, the allowable bearing capacity was 179kN/m2 and the settlement was 7.25mm, which satisfies the required bearing capacity and settlement standards. The calculation results were verified through FEM(Finite element method) analysis using the Mohr-Coulomb material model. The allowable bearing capacity was 169kN/m2 and the settlement was 2.52mm. The bearing capacity showed an error of 5.6% compared to calculated value, and the settlement showed and error of 65.4%. Through theoretical calculations and FEM analysis, it was confirmed that the allowable bearing capacity and settlement satisfies the design criteria as a greenhouse foundation when the width and length of the foundation were 4m. Based on the verified design values, it is expected to be able to present the foundation design criteria for greenhouses through empirical tests such as bearing capacity tests and long-term settlement monitoring.
The transition area between a bridge and an earthwork is one of the weakest area of track because of the track geometry deterioration caused unequal settlement of backfill of abutment. In case of a ballastless track, the approach slab is installed to prevent the phenomenon. But, if there is occurred the inclined displacement on the approach slab by a settlement of the foundation or formation, the track is also under the inclined displacement. And this defect causes reducing the running stability of a vehicle, the riding comfort of passengers, and the deteriorations of track by excessive impact subjected to the track. In this study, parametric studies were performed to know what is the allowable displacement limit on the approach slab to avoid such a bad effect. The length and amount of unequal settlement of the approach slab was adopted as parameter for numerical analysis. And car body accelerations, variations of wheel force and rail stress and uplift force induced on a fastener clip are investigated. From the result, resonable settlement limits of an approach slab according to slab length was suggested.
