  • Semiconductor optical switch modules of 1$\times$2, 1$\times$4, and 4$\times$4 types for 1550 nm optical communication systems were fabricated by using laser welding technique, embodying in 30-pin butterfly package. For better coupling efficiency between switch chip and optical fiber, tapered fibers of 10~15mm lens radii were used, which provided up to 60% optical coupling efficiency. With the help of new laser hammering process, we could recover the lost optical power almost completely up to average 82% of initially obtained power. The fabricated optical switch modules showed good thermal stability of less than 5% degradation even after 200 times thermal cycling test. The 2.5 Gbps optical transmission characteristics of the 4$\times$4 switch module showed low sensitivities of less than -30dB for all possible switching paths. The transmission penalties of 1$\times$2 switch module at $10^{-10}$ BER were 0.6dB and 0.7dB for 50Xm and 90 Km optical fibers, respectively.

  • This paper presents design andd verification of a circuit that improves the control-operation problems of Stored Program Optical Computer (SPOC), which is an optical computer using $LiNbO_3$ optical switching element. Since the memory of SPOC takes the Delay Line Memory (DLM) architecture and instructions that are needless of operands should go though memory access stages, SPOC memory have problems; it takes immoderate access time and unnecessary operations are executed in Arithmetic Logical Unit (ALU) because desired operations can't be selectively executed. In this paper, improvement on circuit has been achieved by removing the memory access of instructions that are needless of operands by decoding instructions before locating operand. Unnecessary operations have been reduced by sending operands to some specific operational units, not to all the operational units in ALD. We show that total execution time of a program is minimized by using the Dual Instruction Register(DIR) architecture.

  • In switching from the track-seeking or track-jumping control mode to track-following control mode in hard disk drives or optical disk drives, initial values of the feedback controller are tuned to improve the transient response. In general, all the initial values of the controller have been compensated for this purpose. In this paper, by partially compensating initial values of digital controllers, we achieve a good performance of the transient response. In the proposed method for IVC (Intial Value Compensation), LMIs (Linear Matrix Inequalities) are used, which includes conditions for improving the performance of the transient response such as reducing a tracking error and control efforts. We obtain optimal initial values of the controller by solving an optimization problem with constraints represented by only one LMI. Although initial values of the controller are partially compensated, we can show that not only a sufficient performance of the transient response is obtained but also control efforts are diminished. The feasibility of the method is verified by simulation studies.

  • In this paper, sharing based admission control scheme is suggested for both service differentiation and improvement of wavelength utilization efficiency in burst switching networks. To provide service differentiation and high wavelength utilization efficiency, some of the wavelengths on a output link are shared with all classes and the others are used for the highest class exclusively. Markov based analysis is applied to the suggested scheme for the performance analysis and the numerical results are derived. The results are: The performance of lower traffic is more improved by the more number of shared wavelengths in case that the higher traffic or lower traffic is arrived equally or that the input rate of lower traffic is low. Another result is that the sharing effect of wavelengths is a little bit lowered when lower traffic passes the threshold.

  • In this Paper, we present an improvement of switch node for wavelength multiplex optical network. Currently because of quick increase of internet traffic a big network capacity is demanded. Wavelength multiplex optical network Provides the data transfer of high speed and the transparent characteristic of the data. Therefore optic network configuration is the most powerful technology in the future. It will be able to control the massive traffic from the optical network in order to transmit the multimedia information of very many quantify. Consequently the node where the traffic control is Possible, is demanded. The optical switch node which manages efficiently the multiple wavelength was Proposed. This switch is composed of a optical switch module for switching and a wavelength converter module for wavelength conversion. It will be able to compose the switch fabric without optical/electro or electro/optical conversion using optical MEMS(Micro Electro Mechanical Switches) module. Finally, we present the good test result regarding the operational qualify of the switch fabric and the performance of optical signal from the switch node. The proposed switch node of the optic network will be able to control the massive traffic with all optical.

  • A reflection type 16x8 S-SEED array from LP(Low Pressure)-MODVD-grown GaAs/AlGaAs extremely shallow quantum well(ESQW) structures, with 4% Al fraction, has been fabricated. Its intrinsic region consists of 50 pairs of alternating 100.angs. GaAs and 100.angs. $Al_{0.04}$Ga$_{0.96}$As layers. A multilayer reflector stack of $Al_{0.04}$/Ga$_{0.96}$ As(599$\AA$)/AlAs(723$\AA$) was incorporated for the reflection plane below the p-i-n structures. The device processing after the MOCVD growth includes the mesa etching, isolation etching, insulator deposition, p & n metallization, and AR(Anti-Reflection) coating. For switching characteristics of the S-SEED in the form of p-i-n ESQW diode, the maximum optical negative resistance was observed at 856nm. Reflectance measurements showed a change from 15.6% to 43.3% for +0.9V to -6V bias. The maximum contrast ration of the S-SEED array was 2.0 and all the 128 devices showed optical bistability with contrast ratios over 2.4 at 5V reverse bias.

  • In this paper, an optical true time-delay (TTD) for two-dimensional (2-D) phased array antennas (PAAs), composed of a multi-wavelength optical source and a fiber optic delay line matrix consisting of $2\times2$ optical switches with optical fiber connected between cross ports, has been proposed. A 2-bit $\times4-bit$ optical TTD for 10-GHz 2-D PAAs has been implemented by cascading a wavelength dependent TTD (WD-TTD) and a wavelength independent TTD (WI-TTD). The unit time delay for WD-TTD and WI-TTD have been chosen as ${\Delta}T=12ps$ and $\Delta\tau=6ps$, respectively. Time delay have been measured at all radiation angles. The maximum delay error for WD-TTD was measured to be 3 ps due to jitter incurred from gain switching. For the case of WI-TTD, error was within ${\pm}\;1\;ps$. The proposed optical TTD for a 2-D PAA has the following advantages: 1) higher gain compared to one-dimensional linear PAAs, 2) stabilization of optical power and wavelength by using a multi-wavelength optical source, and 3) fast beam scan and simple operation due to electronic control of the $2\times2$ optical switches matrix on a column-by-column basis.

  • A self-pulsating multisection distributed-feedback laser diode (DFB LD) can potentially realize all-optical clock extraction. This device generally consists of three sections, two DFB sections and one waveguide section. The most important variable in this device is detuning, which is the relative spectral position between the stop bands of two DFB sections. We fabricated a novel structure in which two gratings were located one over and one under the active layers. Each grating structure was independently defined in processing so that detuning, which is the prerequisite for self-pulsation, could be easily controlled. Observing various self-pulsating phenomena in these devices under several detuning conditions, we characterized the phenomena as dispersive Q-switching, mode beating, and self-mode-locking.

  • A multichannel optical slotted ring network is designed using a wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) technique and photonic packet switching devices. The electronics speed bottleneck is removed out of the ring, which allows utilization of the full bandwidth for the optical fiber transmission medium. The ring channel adopts a slotted ring concept with a destination cell remove strategy for the eing access mechanism. The slot size in the ring is selected as the same as that of ATM based cell in order to be used as B-ISDN Access Networks. In this paper, we devised a mathematical method to measure the average transfer delay characteristics of the network. The analytical method turned out to yield accurate results over a broad range of parameters in comparison to simulation results. From the study, we observed the average transfer delay of the network as the network parameters vary.

  • The design formular of optical focusing systems cannot be applied to ultrasonic B scanners, which use broadband pulses instead of continuous wave. In this paper, a calculation method is studied for analyzing the propagation of ultrasonic broadband pulse excited by ultrasonic array transducers. Using the results, seveial design parameters such as the number of transducer elements, delay time, and the focal point are determined to obtain high resolution in the ultrasonic dynamic focusing system. A dynamic focusing system with low-noise switching characteristics; which attains lateral resolution of 2-3mm all along the axial direction up to 18 cm with a 3.5 MHz linear array transducer, was implemented.
