  • Smart structural systems are defined as ones that demonstrate the ability to modify their characteristics and/or properties in order to respond favorably to unexpected severe loading conditions. The performance of such a task requires a set of additional components to be integrated within such systems. These components belong to three major categories, sensors, processors and actuators. It is wellknown that all structural systems entail some level of uncertainty, because of their extremely complex nature, lack of complete information, simplifications and modeling. Similarly, sensors, processors and actuators are expected to reflect a similar uncertain behavior. As it is imperative to be able to evaluate the impact of such components on the behavior of the system, it is as important to ensure, or at least evaluate, the reliability of such components. In this paper, a system model for reliability assessment of smart structural systems is outlined. The presented model is considered a necessary first step in the development of a reliability assessment algorithm for smart structural systems. The system model outlines the basic components of the system, in addition to, performance functions and inter-relations among individual components. A fault tree model is developed in order to aggregate the individual underlying component reliabilities into an overall system reliability measure. Identification of appropriate limit states for all underlying components are beyond the scope of this paper. However, it is the objective of this paper to set up the necessary framework for identifying such limit states. A sample model for a three-story single bay smart rigid frame, is developed in order to demonstrate the proposed framework.

  • In the present research, in order to predict activity coefficient of inorganic ions in electrolyte solution of a petroleum system, we studied 13 components in the electrolyte solution, including $H_2O$, $CO_2$ (aq), $H^+$, $Na^+$, $Ba^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Sr^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $SO_4$, $CO_3$, $OH^-$, $Cl^-$, and $HCO_3$. To predict the activity coefficient of the components of the petroleum system (a solid/liquid equilibrium system), activity coefficient model of Extended UNIQUAC was studied, along with its adjustable parameters optimized based on a genetic algorithm. The total calculated error associated with optimizing the adjustable parameters of Extended UNIQUAC model considering the 13 components under study at three temperature levels (298.15, 323.15, and 373.15 K) using the genetic algorithm is found to be 0.07.

  • As the lifetime of nuclear power plants (NPPs) reaches design life, the probability for fatal accidents increases. Most of accidents are known to be caused by degradation of mechanical components. Pressure tubes are the most important components in CANDU reactor. They are subjected to various aging mechanisms such as delayed hydride cracking (DHC), irradiation and corrosion, etc. Therefore, the integrity of pressure tube is key concern in CANDU reactor. Up to recently, conventional deterministic approaches have been utilized to evaluate the integrity of components. However, there are many uncertainties to prevent a rational evaluation. The objective of this paper is to assess the failure probability of pressure tube in CANDU. To do this, probability fracture mechanics (PFM) analysis based on the Genetic Algorithm (GA) is performed. For the verification of the analysis, a comparison of the PFM analysis using a commercial code and mathematical method is carried out.

  • In this paper, we designed data transformation interface for the automation of PCB product. The data designed to CAD does not exchange itself for the assembly line, so we analyzed the information of PCB components designed to CAD and developed human error detect algorithm. We also constructed database for the information of IC components. Developed the algorithm can change to the data suitable for the assembly line of PCB and this system was designed to do addition and revision of the components through the user interface. By automating existing manual processing, we were able to shorten the time of 1-2 days to several minutes and enhance reliability of the data and the efficient assembly line of PCB.

  • Bioinformatics is concerned with the creation and development of advanced information and computational technologies for problems in biology. It is divided into genomics, proteomics and metabolimics. In metabolimics, an organism is represented by metabolic pathway, i.e., well-displayed graph, and so the graph drawing tool to draw pathway well is necessary to understand it comprehensively. In this paper, we design an improved drawing algorithm. It enhances the readability by making use of the bipartite graph. Also it is possible to draw large graph properly by considering the facts that metabolic pathway graph is scale-free network and is composed of circular components, hierarchic components and linear components.

  • In this paper, we present the algorithm to enhance the high frequency components of the image by subtracting smoothing version of an image from the original image. In a word, this is the technique to get more a precise and vivid image. The method of Gaussian smoothing is accepted to get the components of the flat image. Moreover we need to consider the size of the gain of the proposed filter in order to preserve the overall brightness of a image. Based on the algorithm verified by MATLAB, we can obtain more vivid and fuller detail of the image than an original image.

  • Internal capacity of a refrigerator is an important indicator for design and purchasing criteria. The components facing the internal space may have holes or gaps between parts. In traditional way, design engineers manually remodeled the parts to fill the holes and the gaps for enclosed boundary of the internal space. Then they calculated internal volume by subtracting the assembly of parts from its enclosing volume. However, filling holes and gaps is not an automated process requiring a plenty of labor and time. In this research, we have developed a voxel-based method to estimate the internal volume of a refrigerator automatically. It starts transforming all components facing the interior space into voxels and fills all holes and gaps automatically by the developed hole-filling algorithm to form a completely closed boundary of the assembly. Then, it identifies the boundary voxels that are facing to the internal voxels with any part of the component. After getting the intersection points between the boundary voxels and the surfaces of components, it generates the boundary surface of triangular facets with the intersection points. Finally, it estimates the internal volume by adding volume of each tetrahedron composed of a triangle of boundary surface and an arbitrary point.

  • A major advantage of wavefront reconstruction based on a series of diffracted intensity images using only single-beam illumination is the simplicity of setup. Here we propose a fast-converging algorithm for wavefront calculation using single-beam illumination. The captured intensity images are resampled to a series of intensity images, ranging from highest to lowest resampling; each resampled image has half the number of pixels as the previous one. Phase calculation at a lower resolution is used as the initial solution phase at a higher resolution. This corresponds to separately calculating the phase for the lower- and higher-frequency components. Iterations on the low-frequency components do not need to be performed on the higher-frequency components, thus making the convergence of the phase retrieval faster than with the conventional method. The principle is verified by both simulation and optical experiments.

  • This paper presents a simultaneous solution algorithm for one-dimensional unsteady flow routing through a dendritic channel system. This simulations solution algorithm is based on the double-sweep method and utilizes separate recursion equations for continuity, momentum and energy equations for each of the individual components of a dendritic channel system. Through separate recursion equations for each of the components. the new algorithm converts a dendritic channel network problem into a single-channel problem. The new algorithm is utilized in conjunction with a linearized unsteady flow model using full dynamic flow equations. The required computer storage for the coefficient matrix of the whole system is reduced significantly from the $2N{\times}2N$ matrix to a $2N{\times}4$ matrix, where N is the number of cross sections used in the computation of flow variables in a dendritic channel system. The algorithm presented in this paper provides an efficient and accurate modeling of unsteady flow events through a dendritic channel system.

  • Application of the Filtered-X LMS adaptive filter to active noise cancellation requires to estimate the transfer characteristics between the output and the error signal of the adaptive canceler. In this paper, we derive an adaptive cancellation algorithm and analyze is convergence behavior when the acoustic noise is assumed to consist of multiple sinusoids. The results of the convergence analysis of the Filtered-X LMS algorithm indicate that the effects of parameter estimation inaccuracy on the convergence behavior of the algorithm are characterize by two distinct components : Phase estimation error and estimated magnitude. In particular, the convergence of the Filtered-X LMS algorithm is show to be strongly affected by the accuracy of the phase response estimate. Simulation results of the algorithm are presented which support the theoretical convergence analysis.
