  • About 2.1g of pale yellow flavor concentrate was obtained from 10kg of chopped fresh ascidians through a Likens-Nickerson steam distilllation/solvent extraction. These concentrates could be fractionated to neutral $(91.5\%),\;basic\;(1.0\%),\;phenolic\;(3.2\%),\;and\;acidic\;(4.3\%)$ fractions. Total 65 volatile compounds were identified from those concentrates. The neutral fraction was representative flavor fraction which showed a similar flavor of total steam distillates of ascidian. The major compounds $(38.2\%\;of\;neutral\;fraction)$ were identified as carbon atoms 8 to 10 of alcohols. Among these volatile alcohols, 1-octanol, 2,7-decadien-1-o1, 3-octen-l-01, 7-decen-l-ol, and l-decanol were the dominent compounds found in neutral fraction. But the basic, phenolic, and acidic fractions differs from ascidian steam distillates flavor.

  • Atom-economical esterification is of great importance in green chemistry. In this work, we demonstrated the catalyst and additive free esterification of alcohols by their reaction with 2-acyl-4,5-dichloropyridazin-3(2H)-ones without solvent at $100^{\circ}C$. Aliphatic and aromatic alcohols were converted into the corresponding esters in good to excellent yields. It is noteworthy that the reaction is solvent-free, atom-economic, easy-workup, and rapid and that the process is inexpensive.

  • By using literature data, the empirical equations have been derived which describe the interrelationships of explosion and other related properties of n-alcohols. The properties which have been correlated data are : lower and upper explosive limits, heats of combustion, carbon numbers. Also, the new equation for predicting the temperature dependence of lower explosive limits(LEL) of n-alcohols on the basis of explosive limits, heats of combustion, flame propagation theory and mathematical method is proposed. The values calculated by the proposed equations were a good agreement with literature data within a few percent. From a given explosive properties. by using the proposed equations, it is possible to predict the other properties. It is hoped eventually that this method will permit the estimation of the explosive properties of alcohol with improved accuracy and the broader application for other compounds.

  • A new and efficient reagent for the conversion of primary and secondary alcohols into their corresponding aldehydes and ketones is introduced. The reagent was easily prepared from the reaction of DBU with molecular bromine in $CHCl_3$. The structure of the reagent as $DBUH^+{Br_3}^-$ was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis.

  • Iron (III) phosphate was employed as an efficient catalyst for the chemo selective acetylation of alcohols and phenols under solvent free condition at room temperature and with high yields. Iron (III) phosphate is also a potential green catalyst due to solid intrinsically, reusable and with high catalytic activity.

  • Potassium carbonate reacts with silicon tetrachloride to form trichlorosilyloxy carbonylchloride which reacts subsequently with another molecule of silicon tetrachloride leading to phosgene eventually in chlorinated solvents. This in situ generated trichlorosilyloxy carbonylchloride or phosgene were found to be very effective for the chlorination of a wide variety of alcohols to the corresponding chlorides. Primary, secondary and benzylic alcohols were converted into corresponding chlorides when treated with silicon tetrachloride in the presence of potassium carbonate at room temperature.

  • Explosion limit and flash point are the major combustion properties used to determine the fire and explosion hazards of the flammable substances. In this study, in order to predict upper explosion limits(UEL), the upper flash point of n-alcohols were measured under the VLE(vapor-liquid equilibrium) state by using Setaflash closed cup tester(ASTM D3278). The UELs calculated by Antoine equation using the experimental upper flash point are usually lower than the several reported UELs. From the given results, using the proposed experimental and predicted method, it is possible to research the upper explosion limits of the other flammable substances.

  • Four coordinated rhodium(Ⅰ) complexes, Rh($ClO_4$)(CO)$(PPh_3)_2$ and [$Rh(CO)(PPh_3)_3$]$ClO_4$(2) catalyze the iosmerization of allylic alcohols to the corresponding carbonyl compounds at room temperature under nitrogen. The isomerization is faster with 2 than with 1, which is understood in terms of relative ease of the last step of the catalytic cycle, the reductive elimination of enol. Relative rates of the isomerization with 1 and 2 for different allylic alcohols are also explained by the relative ease of the enol elimination step in part. The first step of the catalytic cycle, the complex formation of the allylic alcohol through the ${\pi}-system$ of the olefinic group of the allylic alcohol and the following step, formation of hydridoallyl complex also seem to affect the overall rate of the isomerization.

  • The gelling agent used in Zn-air cells plays a role in improving battery life. It prevents the evaporation of water and diffusion of $Zn^{2+}$ ions away from the current collector. Additional functionality was incorporated by replacing some of the gelling agents with new materials. Alcohols with moderate viscosity, namely maltose, sucrose, poly ethylene glycol 600, and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose, were used to replace some gelling agents in this work. Among these alcohols, poly ethylene glycol 600 and 2-hydroxyethyl cellulose improved the cycle life of full cells. This improved cycle life was attributed to the inhibition of water electrolysis and the improved cycle life of the anode.

  • A comparative evaluation of engine cleanliness was performed on the transport gasoline blended with bio- alcohols, and this study was considered to achieve the aim of greenhouse gas reduction in Korea. In particular, the fuel blended with bio-ethanol and bio-butanol showed the best engine cleaning performance both on combustion chamber deposits and intake valve deposits. The deposit control gasoline additive was effective to remove intake valve deposits. In contrast, the amount of combustion chamber deposits were tend to increase even though fuels blended with bio-alcohols were used. In overall, fuels blended with bio-alcohols, compared to fossil fuels, still showed outstanding performance in terms of engine cleanliness.
