Agricultural soils around springwaters heavily affected by pesticide run-off and around wells considering the regional characteristics were collected at 24 stations in Jeju Island, and the physicochemical properties and adsorption and leaching characteristics of four nonionic pesticides (diazinon, fenitrothion, alachlor, and metalaxyl) were investigated. The values of the major soil factors affecting the adsorption and leaching of pesticides, namely, soil pH($H_2O$), organic matter content, and cation exchange capacity (CEC), were in the range of 4.64 ~ 8.30, 0.9 ~ 13.1% and 12.7 ~ 31.7 meq/100 g, respectively. The Freundlich constant, $K_F$ value, which gives a measure of the adsorption capacity, decreased in the order of fenitrothion > diazinon > alachlor > metalaxyl, which was identical to their lower water solubility. Among the collected soils, the $K_F$ value was very highly correlated with organic matter content ($r^2=0.800{\sim}0.876$) and CEC ($r^2=0.715{\sim}0.825$) and showed a high correlation with clay content ($r^2=0.473{\sim}0.575$) and soil pH($H_2O$) ($r^2=0.401{\sim}0.452$). The leaching of pesticides in the soil column showed a reverse relationhip with their adsorption in soils, i.e., the pesticides leached more quickly for the soils with lower values of organic matter content and CEC among the soils and for the pesticides with higher water solubility.
In this study, we determined distribution status of organonitrogen pesticides such as trifluralin, atrazine, metribuzin, alachlor, malathion, nitrofen, permethrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate, and parathion accumulated in the fresh water fishes and amphibians. We collected those samples at 31 sites from the basin of major rivers, and separated the muscular tissue as a final sample for analysis. In the pretreatment process, lipid was eliminated by using acetonitrile and n-hexane, and pesticides were reextracted with dichloromethane. The extract was dehydrated and concentrated, and then cleaned it up by passing the Florisil column, and pesticide content was finally determined by using a GC-MS system after introducing isotope labelled references. The accumulation level was observed in the range of $0.17{\sim}6.8{\mu}g/kg$ in amphibians and $0.26{\sim}16{\mu}g/kg$ in fishes including cypermethrin as $16{\mu}g/kg$.
A field experiment was done to evaluate the growth response, rhizobia nodulation and vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (VAMF) infection of soybean treated with the different concentration of three-herbicides, alachlor, simazine, linuron. The results obtained were summarized as follows ; Emergence rate of soybean was non-significantly decreased by increasing the herbicide concentration. In simazine treatment, low emergence rate showed even in recommended concentration, especially the lowest emergence rate in treble concentration of recommended dose was about 50%. The plant length of soybean lowered by increasing the herbicide concentration, but there were almost no differences in recommended dose. Particularly that in a high concentration of herbicides at three weeks after treatment(WAT) was decreased remarkably. In the plant diameter of soybean shoot, no differences in the recommended concentration of alachlor and linuron at 2 WAT, but those of recommended dose was decreased with the lapse of time, and the lowest treatment was simazine-treated plot. Leaf area and fresh weight of soybean tended to decrease over the control even in recommended concentration and it was decreased with the increment of the herbicide dose. Yield component, fresh weight of rhizobia nodule and chlorophyll content of soybean leaves were reduced with the increment of herbicide dose, espicially remarkable tendency was revealed in simazine-treated plot. Seasonal infection rate of VAM showed a slight decrease by increasing of herbicide dose, and the lowest infection was simazine treatment. Significant correlation was realized among the reduction of rhizobia nodulation, VAM colonization and the agronomic characters of soybean and it was considered that the reduction of rhizobia nodulation and VAM colonization by misapplication of the herbicides might be a causal factor for decrease in soybean yield.
Water samples from several wastewater treatment plants and two industry drains in Gyeongsangbukdo were investigated for concentration levels of micropollutants. Samples were taken totally four times from May to November of 2008 and tested for seven factors including pesticide, 1,4-Dioxane and Perchlorate which had been big issues for Nakdong river because of their contaminations. As results, 2,4-D, Alachlor, and BEHA were not detected while BEHP was detected at some sampling sites. 1,4-Dioxane and Perchlorate were also detected in wide ranges from several sampling sites. Therefore, continuous supervising and monitoring systems needed to be invested for proper management for micropollutants since those micropollutants could affect human health and aquatic system with low concentration levels.
The toxic effects of four pesticides on the entomopathogenic nematodes. Heterorhabditis bacteriophora NC strain, Steinernema glaseri NC and Dongrae strain were tested by checking the mortality of infective juveniles(Ijs) in aqueous solution of pesticide. Mortality of Ijs was influenced by pesticide and concentration and soaking time. The herbicide alachlor and insecticide fenitrothion were toxic to Ijc of three entomopathogenic nematodes. But, the fungicides mepronil and tolclofos-methyl were nontoxic to Ijs. Tolclofos-methyl showed significantly very week toxicity at 28 days after soaking for S. glaseri NC strain. H. bacteriophora NC strain was more highly sensitive to high temperature condition then were the other nematodes.

In cultivation environment, various pesticides are used and some of them could be volatilized into the air. This could affect farmer's health and also cause environmental pollution. This study was carried out to investigate the volatilization of pesticides, and use the reference data for preventing farmer's pesticide intoxication and securing worker safety. The experiment was conducted in a greenhouse using a lysimeter which was of $1m^2$ area and 1.5 m depth filled with upland soil. The pesticides treated in lysimeter soil were ethoprophos (5.0% GR), diazinon (34.0% EC), alachlor (43.7% EC), metolachlor (40.0% EC), chlorpyrifos (2.0% GR), pendimethalin (31.7% EC), carbaryl (50.0% WP), napropamide (50% WP), tebuconazole (25.0% WP) and imidacloprid (2.0% GR). Each pesticide was treated at a concentration of 770.5 mg based on A.I (%). The recovery of pesticide ranged from 77.4 to 99.3%. The volatilized pesticides in air were collected by personal air sampler with PUF tube at 4 l/min flow rate. In addition, temperature and humidity were measured. The collected samples were extracted using acetone in a soxhlet apparatus for 8 hours. The extracted pesticides were resoluted with acetonitrile and diluted 5 times. It was analyzed with LC-MS/MS. For 720 hours experiment, the largest vaporization amount of each pesticide in air was ethoprophos $15.24{\mu}g/m^3$, diazinon $5.14{\mu}g/m^3$, pendimethalin $2.70{\mu}g/m^3$, chlorpyrifos $1.76{\mu}g/m^3$, alachlor $1.40{\mu}g/m^3$, metolachlor $1.12{\mu}g/m^3$, carbaryl $0.27{\mu}g/m^3$, napropamide $0.22{\mu}g/m^3$, tebuconazole $0.11{\mu}g/m^3$ and imidacloprid $0.05{\mu}g/m^3$. The R value (coefficient of correlation) between volatilization and vapor pressure of pesticides is higher than 0.99. Therefore, there is high correlation between volatilization and vapor pressure of pesticides.

The objective was to develop herbicides for liquorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis), one of most important ingredients of herbal medicine in Korea. Soil-applied herbicides, pendimethalin at 1,585 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, simazine at 1,000 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, alachlor at 5 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, metolachlor at 1,600 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, and ethalfluralin at 1,050 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$ provided greater control of hairy crabgrass and barnyardgrass (> 60%) but less control of Abutilon avicennae and Fagopyrum esculentum under growth chamber conditions. Of tested soil-applied herbicides, pendimethalin and simazine showed slight injury to liquorice (<17%). In the field experiment conducted in Chunchon, pendimethalin and simazine provided greater control of weeds: total fresh weight of weeds in control plots was 187 g $m^{-2}$, while those in both herbicides-treated plots were nil. Fresh weights of liquorice seedlings in pendimethalin- and simazine-applied plots, however, were not different from those in control plots. Foliar-applied herbicides, such as dicamba at 964 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, 2,4-D at 280 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, mecoprop at 2,500 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, flazasulfuron at 75 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, imazaquin at 800 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, bentazon at 1,600 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$, and pyribenzoxim at 30 g a.i. $ha^{-1}$ reduced the growth of liquorice seedlings and provided moderate to total damage. Overall results show that pendimethalin and simazine appears to be effective herbicide candidates for liquorice.

Non-spinning syndrome of Bombyx mori has been serious issue in sericulture industry near Kyungbuk area. This study was focused on the analysis of the mechanism and on screening candidate chemicals inducing the anti-metamorphosis of the silkworms. Rearing temperatures or initial body weight of the final instar larvae did not affect a normal larval to pupal metamorphosis of B. mori. However, pyriproxyfen (a juvenile hormone (JH) agonist) induced follicle patency significantly even at its 10$\^$-8/ M concentration and inhibited metamorphosis of B. mori in both developmental time and dose dependent manners. Pyriproxyfen induced JH esterase (JHE) activity and downregulated expression of JH binding protein of 5. mori. These results suggests that pyriproxyfen induced JHE activity as a JH agonist and that the elevated JHE activity degraded endogenous JH and resulted in JHBP gene expression. Based on the fact that the JH agonist induced follicle patency and inhibited metamorphosis of B. mori, follicle patency bioassay suggested that three commercial pesticides including simazine, molinate or alachlor were proved to give potent JH agonistic effect on B. mori. Further direct exposure experiments to these candidates are required to determine the chemicals responsible for the non-spinning syndrome of 8. mori.
Application of steam distillation on the analysis of pesticide residue in soil, water and crops was studied using the nitrogen distillation apparatus. Most pesticides which were extracted by organic solvents could be analyzed by the steam distillation method. For instance, distillations of PCNB, ${\gamma}-BHC$, ${\alpha}-or$${\beta}-endosulfan$, IBP, diazinon, fenthion, fenitrothion, alachlor, butachlor, pretilachlor, metolachlor, pendimethalin, benthiocarb and molinate were possible, but not simazine, atrazine and nitrofen. The optimum volume of distillate for a sufficient extraction of pesticide varied according to kind of pesticide. In general, the volume needed was little for carbamate, but much more for organochlorine. When the definite amount of distillate was obtained and then the condenser was washed by acetone, the optimum volume of distillate was less. Using the steam distillation method, the amount of organic solvent needed for one extraction of pesticide from soil, water and vegetable was less than the conventional solvent extraction method, and the analytical procedure became simpler. The process of concentration and clean up was mostly unnecessary, although a ghost peak was apparent in the gas chromatogram according to the kind of materials distilled.
In order to select the effective herbicides on polyethylene film mulching culture of galic (Allium sativum L) for weed control in early and low temperature condition, several experiments were conducted at the Chungbuk Provincial Office of Rural Development from 1978 to 1982. The dominated weed in the open field was Chenopodium album (98.1%), and there were many Rvrippa globosas (39.7%), and Dtgitaria sanguinalis (34.3%) in the polyethylene film mulching culture. Effective herbicides in polyethylene film culture were alachlor EC, pendimethalin EC, oxyfluorfen EC, and acifluorfen EC. After the 15th May, metabenzthiazuron WP and prometryne WP for the gramineous weeds were effective. There was a little chemical injury on acifluorfen EC application, but not another influence on the yield. With the effective herbicides application in the polyethylene film mulching culture, yield (22-23%) and profits (26.84) to the nonmuiching culture were increased. Increase of yield (20%) and profits (56%) in black opaque polyethylene film mulching culture compared with the conventional culture was possible.
