Kinetics of Chromium(III) Oxidation by Various Manganess Oxides (망간 산화물에 의한 3가 크롬의 산화)

  • Birnessite, pyrolusite and hausmannite were synthesized and tested for the ability to oxidize Cr(III) to Cr(VI). These oxides differed in zero point of charge, surface area, and crystallinity. The kinetic study showed that Cr(III) oxidation on the Mn-oxide surface is a first-order reaction. The reaction rate was various for different oxide at different conditions. Generally the reaction by hausmannite, containing Mn(III), was faster than the others, and oxidation by pyrolusite was much slower. Solution pH and initial Cr(III) concentration had a significant effect on the reaction. Inhibited oxidation at higher pH and initial Cr(III) concentration could be due to the chance of Cr(III) precipitation or complexing on the oxide surface. Oxidations by birnessite and hausmannite were faster at lower pH, but pyrolusite exhibited increased oxidation capacity at higher pH in the range between 3.0 and 5.0. Reactions were also temperature sensitive. Although calculated activation energies for the oxidation reactions at pH 3.0 were higher than the general activation energy for diffusion, there is no experimental evidence to suggest which reaction is the rate limiting step.

  • Benzene is a hazardous air pollutant, classified as carcinogenic to humans, that requires special management. Benzene exists both indoors and outdoors and the control measure of indoor benzene is different from that of outdoor benzene. The removal of indoor benzene needs to be accomplished at low temperatures (normally below $100^{\circ}C$), while outdoor benzene is usually removed at much higher temperature ($300-400^{\circ}C$) by using catalytic oxidation. This review paper summarizes the recent trend in catalytic treatment of airborne benzene, focusing on catalytic oxidation and catalytic ozone oxidation. Particular attention is paid to Mn-based catalysts for low-temperature oxidation of benzene, which are more economical than the other noble-metal catalysts. Various methods are used to generate more efficient Mn-based catalysts for benzene removal. Ozone oxidation is attracting particularly significant attention because it can remove benzene effectively below $100^{\circ}C$, even at room temperature.

  • The optimum conditions were studied for the preparation of transparent iron oxide with the air oxidation of FeOOH. The FeOOH obtained by mixing NaOH and FeSO$_4$ solution in various conditions such as R(=2NaOH/FeSO$_4$), FeSO$_4$ concentration. reaction temperature and air flow rate. When the FeSO$_4$ increased gradually, the concentration of iron ion in the solution became high. So, particle size increased precipitating Fe$_3O_4$. Goethite dehydrate at about 200$^{\circ}C$ and ended the reaction at about 320$^{\circ}C$ forming hematite. The lower the reaction temperature was, the shorter the particle length of goethite and particle size decreased. When the flow rate of air as an oxidant increased, the amount of dissolved oxygen in the solution increased, which made oxidation rate increased. And then particle size of goethite decreased.

  • The power characteristics of the Mg-Air fuel cell were investigated with regard to variation of load conditions. The types of load current using for the Mg-Air fuel cell with 10% NaCl electrolyte were step type, ramp type and pulse type. It was found that transient phenomena occurred in the step current load, which is due to activate of the oxidation-reduction reaction process. And the transient time increase with the load current increase. In the load current of ramp type, the slop of voltage drop increased with current load slop ${\alpha}$ increase. The load voltage and power decreased according to the pulse period of load current decrease were attributed to the metal sludges.

  • The transient characteristics of the Mg/Air fuel cell were ascribed to the load current, electrolyte concentrations, air electrode area and electrode distance. It was found that transient phenomena occurred in the load current, which is due to activate of the oxidation and reduction reaction process. The transient time increase with the load current increase. The transient characteristics were investigated with regard to internal resistance. The maximum power output analysis was employed in order to explain the delayed action under various experimental conditions. The internal resistances had a significant effect on the transient characteristics. The transient curves thus obtained were in almost agreement with internal resistance characteristics.

  • This research has been studied in terms of investigating the reaction behavior of pyrite with a cyclone reactor. The Mathematical model has developed pyrite oxidation and lime sulfation in this reactor. The model assumes a chemical control shrinking core behavior for the pyrite and a fluid film control shrinking core behavior for the lime. The model was solved and characterized numerically. Experiments have been performed to study the influence of reaction parameters such as reactor temperatures, pyrite particle sizes, air flow rates, feeding rates, and mixing ratio of pyrite and lime. The oxidation and sulfation products were characterized chemically and physically.

  • The purpose of this dissertation is to increase oxidation resistance for Polybutadiene & Polyisoprene, and to investigate the energetics of inhibited oxidation of Polybutadiene & Polyisoprene stabilized with various types of antioxidants using DSC. The results of the study are as fellows: 1. In the DSC SCREEN for the onset temperature of oxidation, Polybutadiene was faster than Polyisoprene for the samples containing no antioxidant in air. 2. In the DSC evaluation for Polybutadiene, Recipe BG-4 with 2.0phr compounds of antioxidant was the best effective, and Recipe BS-4 with 2.0phr compounds of antioxidant was the worst effective, and the degrees of effect of antioxidant were exhibited in the ranking of G-1, D, BHT, and SP, roughly. 3. In the DSC evaluation for the Polyisoprene, Recipe IG-4 with 2.0phr compounds of antioxidant was the best effective, and Recipe ID-4 with 2.0phr compounds of antioxidant was the worst effective, and the degrees of effect of antioxidant were exhibited in the ranking of G-1, SP, BHT, and D roughly. 4. In the study on enthalpy which depends on exothermal reaction, the enthalpy of Polyisoprene was gloater than that of Polybutadiene. However, the problem was not solved completely, and it needs further studies.

  • ${Sr_{1-x}Ba_xNb_2O_6$(SBN) have been obtained in Pt crucible by melting and cooling in air atmosphere. Some SBNs being at the bottom of the crucible are black and transparent, and the other SBNs colorless. The black SBN became to be colorless by oxidation heat treatment $1,300^{\circ}C$ for 4 h, Curie temperature is changed by colorless change of black SBN. The reason seems to be $Nb^{5+}$ oxidation of some $Nb^{4+}$ ions in SBN or effect of unknown impurities. Diffused Phase Transition (DPT) was appeared during heating and cooling process. Various sintered SBN ceramics specimen showed relaxor characteristics.
