  • In Korea, 69.4 % of duck farms had utilized conventional plastic greenhouses. In this facilities, there are difficulties in controlling indoor environments for raising duck. High rearing density in duct farms also made the environmental control difficult resulting in getting more stressed making their immune system weaker. Therefore, a facility is needed to having structurally enough solidity and high efficiency on the environmental control. So, new design plans of duck house have recently been conducted by National Institute of Animal Science in Korea. As a study in advance to establish standard, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was used to estimate the aerodynamic problems according to the designs by means of overall and regional ventilation efficiencies quantitatively and qualitatively. Tracer gas decay (TGD) method was used to calculate ventilation rate according to the structural characteristics of duck houses including installation of indoor circulation fan. The results showed that natural ventilation rate was averagely 164 % higher than typically designed ventilation rate, 1 AER ($min^{-1}$). Meanwhile, mechanically ventilated duck houses made 81.2 % of summer ventilation rate requirement. Therefore, it is urgent to develop a new duck house considering more structural safety as well as higher efficiency of environmental control.

  • As regional air pollution gets worse by the sulfur oxides emitted from various types of vessels passing through the many countries, the International Maritime Organization establishes the emission control areas and regulates sulfur dioxide in those areas. In order to satisfy these regional regulations, the fuel selection method and the exhaust gas post-treatment device are applied to the ships. Due to the economic reasons, the post-treatment method of exhaust gas for reducing the amount of sulfur oxides discharged is mainly preferred. The scrubber which is dominantly used in the ships are the spray type system where the sprayed liquid drops used for capturing the soluble sulfur dioxides in the exhaust gas. The performance of the spray type system depends on the size distribution of the sprayed droplets. In order to evaluate this performance, we designed counterflow type scrubber and cyclone scrubber and evaluated the desulfurization efficiency and the amount of droplet evaporation according to the size of each droplet by using computational fluid dynamics. The Eulerian-Eulerian analysis method was used because the scrubber had a gas-liquid two-phase flow inside the scrubber. When the diameter of the droplet was $100{\mu}m$, $300{\mu}m$, $500{\mu}m$ and $700{\mu}m$. As a result, both of scrubbers showed high desulfurization efficiency and low evaporation amount at $500{\mu}m$ and $700{\mu}m$.

  • Dryers becoming commercially available for experimental and industrial use are classified to general drying oven, hot-air dryer, vacuum dryer, freezing dryer, etc. and kinds of them are various from the function, size and volume, etc. But the moisture measurement is not applied although it is important factor for the quality control and the performance improvement of products, and then now is very passive because the weight is weighed arbitrarily after dry-end. Generally the method for measuring moisture is divided by a direct measurement method and a indirect measurement method, and the former such as the change of weight or volume on the front and rear of separation of moisture, etc. is mainly used. Relatively a indirect measurement is very limited to apply due to utilize measurement apparatuses using temperature conductivity and micro-wave etc. In this research, we easily designed the moisture measurement system using the open-source based Arduino, and monitored moisture fluctuations and weight profiles in the real-time without the effect of external environment. Concretely the temperature-humidity and load cell sensors were packaged into a drying oven and the various change values were measured, and their sensors capable to operate 60℃ and 80℃ were selected to suitable for the moisture sensitive materials and the food dry. And also the performance safety using the organic samples of banana, pear, sawdust could be secured because the changes of evaporation rate as the dry time and temperature, and the measurement values of load cell appeared stable response characteristics through repeated experiments. Hereafter we judge that the reliability can be improved increasingly through the expansion of temperature-humidity range and the comparative analysis with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) program.

  • In this study, the model of the indirect wind suction waste sorting machine for characteristics of the screening of waste was studied using computational fluid dynamics and the drag coefficient for the model and the suction wind speed were obtained. The wind separator are developing by installing a cyclone air outlet to the suction blower impeller waste is selective in a way that does not pass the features and characteristics of the inlet pipe of the pressure loss and separation efficiency can have a significant impact on. Using Wind separator for selection of waste in the waste prior research on the aerodynamic properties are essential. For plastic cases, it is reasonable to take the drag coefficient between 0.8 and 1.0, and for cans, compression depending on whether the cans, the drag coefficient is in the range from 0.2 to 0.7. The separation efficiency of waste as change suction speed was the highest efficiency when the suction speed was 25~26 m/s. Shape of the inlet, depending on how the transfer pipe of the duct pressure loss occurs because the inlet velocity changes through the appropriate design standards to allow for continued research is needed.

  • When nonuniform thermal boundary conditions are imposed on the surface of a circular cylinder in crossflow, the heat transfer characteristics can be quite different compared to what is found for isothermal or constant heat flux boundary conditions. In the present analysis, two kinds of nonuniform boundary conditions along the circumference of the cylinder are considered in a uniform stream of air: step changes and linear profiles. Step changes in temperature can arise on the surface of an external, cylindrical, solar central receiver. As the working fluid(water) flows through the vertical tubes that ring the circumference of Solar One(a solar central receiver in Barstow, California), the solar flux on the receiver heats the water from a liquid to a superheated state. In this process, portions of the receiver panels, and thus portions of the circumference of the cylinder, function as a preheater, boiler, or superheater. Hence the surface temperature can vary significantly around the cylinder. Common engineering practice has been to use an average wall temperature with an isothermal cylinder heat transfer coefficient when estimating the convective loss in these kinds of situations.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate numerically the effect of building roof shaps on wind flow and pollutant dispersion in a street canyon with one row of trees of pore volume, $P_{vol}=96%$. A three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is used to evaluate air flow and pollutant dispersion within an urban street canyon using Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and the Explicit Algebraic Reynolds Stress Models (EARSM) based on k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model to close the equation system. The numerical model is performed with ANSYS-CFX code. Vehicle emissions were simulated as double line sources along the street. The numerical model was validated by the wind tunnel experiment results. Having established this, the wind flow and pollutant dispersion in urban street canyons (with six roof shapes buildings) are simulated. The numerical simulation results agree reasonably with the wind tunnel data. The results obtained in this work, indicate that the flow in 3D domain is more complicated; this complexity is increased with the presence of trees and variability of the roof shapes. The results also indicated that the largest pollutant concentration level for two walls (leeward and windward wall) is observed with the upwind wedge-shaped roof. But the smallest pollutant concentration level is observed with the dome roof-shaped.

  • A computational system to predict flowfield and infrared signature in aircraft exhaust system is developed. As the first step, a virtual mission profile is considered and an engine is selected through a performance analysis. Then a nozzle that meets the requirement of each mission is designed. The internal flow in the exhaustion nozzle at the maximum thrust is analyzed using a state-of-the-art CFD code. In addition, a system to combine information of the skin temperature distribution of the nozzle and after-body surface with an infrared prediction code is developed. Finally, qualitative results for the infrared signature reduction design are obtained by investigating the infrared signature level under various conditions.

  • In the case of a propeller-driven aircraft, power-on effect generated by the propeller has a strong influence on the performance and the stability of an aircraft directly and indirectly. A numerical study on the power-on effect has been performed using the CFD based on the multiple reference frame and sliding mesh model. The power-on effect increases the overall lift and the maximum lift of the aircraft. In addition to lift increment, power-on effect delays the stall of the aircraft. On the other hand, the power-on effect increases the drag significantly and consequently decreases the lift-to-drag ratio of the aircraft. Furthermore, the power-on effect decreases the nose-down pitching moment and consequently decreases the longitudinal static stability of the aircraft. It is expected that the analysis results presented and discussed in this report will be used as an important material for analyzing the aircraft performance and stability and will contribute the development of the propeller-driven aircraft with the pusher propeller.

  • The pressurization system in a liquid rocket propulsion system provides a controlled gas pressure in the ullage space of the vehicle propellant tanks. It is advantage to employ a hot gas heat exchanger in the pressurization system to increase the specific volume of the pressurant and thereby reduce over-all system weight. Therefore a significant improvement in pressurization system performance can be achieved, particularly in a cryogenic system. For this study air and $CN_2$ are employed as external fluid and pressurant respectively Numerical analysis on the pressurant discharging characteristics have been compared with the experimental results performed at the PTF(Propellant-feeding Test Facility). It is shown that the discrepancy of analytic and experimental results is within about ${\pm}15%$. It is estimated that the temperature drop rate of cryogenic pressurant immersed liquid oxygen can be predicted using this analytic approach method.
