  • The primary objectives of this study are to investigate the properties of strength and durability of recycled aggregate concrete was added polypropylene as variables and to fabricate fine concrete in some conditions. The variables are substitution ratios of recycled aggregate(0, 30, 50, 100%) and additions of polypropylene(0, 0.2, 0.5, 1.0%). Compressive strength test to investigate strength properties and freeze-thawing test and drying shrinkage test to durability properties were done. As the result of this study, When variables are substitution ratio(30%) of recycled aggregated and addition(0.5%) of polypropylene, fine concrete was fabricated.

  • The properties of fresh and hardened concrete made using three types of artificial cold bonded aggregates are determined. The properties, namely, slump, water absorption, compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of concrete containing artificial aggregate are reported. The variables considered are aggregate type and water-to-cement ratio. Three types of cold bonded aggregates are prepared using fly ash and quarry dust. The water-to-cement ratio of 0.35, 0.45, 0.55 and 0.65 is used. The test result indicates that artificial aggregates can be recommended for making the concrete up to a strength grade of 38 MPa. The use of quarry dust in the production of artificial aggregate mitigates environmental concerns on disposal problems of the dust. Hence, the alternate material proposed in this study is a green technology in concrete production.

  • In this study, effect of surface modification of waste glass for fine aggregates on the mechanical properties and alkali silica reaction of mortar was analyzed. As a result, it was confirmed that the incorporation of waste glass fine aggregate decreases the mechanical properties of the mortar and increase the alkali silica reaction expansion. On the other hand, the surface modification of the waste glass fine aggregate is effective in improving this problem. However, unlike green and brown waste glass, it is judged that an additional experiment to determine the cause is necessary for white waste glass where alkali silica reactive expansion occurs extremely.

  • The basic properties and volume stability of the ultra-rapid setting cement mortar containing low-quality recycled aggregate with a higher water absorption and lower specific gravity than relavent Korea Standard were experimentally confirmed. The mix proportion without recycled aggregate followed that of the general repair mortar used in the fields. 15% and 30% of the fine aggregate was substituted by the recycled aggregate in the mixtures with and without latex emulsion, and properties and characteristics of the mortar including mortar flow, setting time, compressive and flexural strength, and linear deformation under sealed and unsealed conditions were evaluated. It was confirmed that when low-quality recycled aggregate was used by 30%, there were risks of decrease in the early-age strength by up to 50% within 24h and increases in drying shrinkage by up to 2 times for 2 weeks compared to the the mixtures without the recycled aggregate.

  • In order to replace mineral aggregate used as road pavement materials with steel slag aggregate, this present study evaluated mechanical properties of SMA Concrete mixtures using steel slag aggregate as oxidized slag from electric furnace in iron works. The variables of this experiment are the aggregate type of mineral and steel slag and the sieve sized of 10mm and 13mm. The physical properties inclu ding the specific gravity and absorption rate etc. of the slag aggregate mixtu res satisfied the KS standard as asphalt mixtu re. As a resu lt of evalu ating the mechanical properties of the asphalt mixtures, the optimum asphalt content of the slag aggregate mixtures were lower than that of the mineral aggregate mixtures, but other quality standards were all satisfied. In the deformation strength evaluation, the slag aggregate mixtures were measu red slightly higher than that of the mineral aggregate mixtu res, and the dynamic stability test satisfied the 2,000pass/mm standard value in all specimens. And, the moduli of resilient of the slag aggregate mixtures showed an improved value compared with the mineral aggregate mixtures. Therefore, as the resilient rate of the slag aggregate mixtures improved, it is speculated that there will be an effect of improving public performance according to the repeated traffic load of the vehicle.

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental study to investigate the influences of high temperatures on the mechanical properties of concrete containing recycled fine aggregate. A total of 150 concrete prisms ($100{\times}100{\times}300mm$) and 150 concrete cubes ($100{\times}100{\times}100mm$) are cast and heated under five different temperatures ($20^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$, $800^{\circ}C$) for test. The results show that the mass loss, compressive strength, elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength of concrete specimens containing recycled fine aggregate decline significantly as the temperature rise. At the same temperature, the compressive strength, splitting tensile strength, elastic modulus of concrete specimens containing recycled coarse aggregate and recycled fine aggregate (RHC) is lower than that of concrete specimens containing natural coarse aggregate and recycled fine aggregate (RFC). The shape of stress-strain curves of concrete specimens at different temperatures is different, and the shape of that become flatter as the temperature rises. Normal concrete has better energy absorption capacity than concrete containing recycled fine aggregate.

  • This study investigated influence of fine aggregate types on fundamental properties of cement mortar. Test showed that concrete using lime stone crushed fine aggregate(L) exhibited the most favorable fluidity due to grain shape and particle distribution, and next was blending aggregate miting L and G, blending aggregate mixing L and N, granite crushed fine aggregate(G), natural fine aggregate(N) in an order. Concrete using N had the highest air content and L was the smallest value because of the effective filling performance by continuos particle distribution. Compressive, tensile and flexural strength of all concrete using L had the highest value due to the smallest value of air content. It is also found that concrete using L resulted in decrease of drying shrinkage length change ratio.

  • The Discrete Element Method, DEM, is increasingly used in fracture studies of non-homogeneous continuous media, such as rock and concrete. A 2D circular rigid DEM formulation, developed to model concrete, has been adopted. A procedure developed to generate aggregate particles with a given aspect ratio and shape is presented. The aggregate particles are modelled with macroparticles formed by a group of circular particles that behave as a rigid body. Uniaxial tensile and compression tests performed with circular and non-circular aggregates, with a given aspect ratio, have shown similar values of fracture toughness when adopting uniform strength and elastic properties for all the contacts. Non-circular aggregate assemblies are shown to have higher fracture toughness when different strength and elastic properties are set for the matrix and for the aggregate/matrix contacts.

  • In this research, the possible applicability of mixture blended with natural, crushed, and recycled fine aggregate are discussed. The fresh and hardened properties of mortar using blended fine aggregates are monitored depending on various blending ratio of fine aggregates. Newly developed ternary diagram was also utilized for better interpretation of the data. It was found that air content increased and unit weight decreased as recycled fine aggregate content increased. With moisture type processing of recycled fine aggregate, the mortar flow was not negatively affected by increase in the recycled fine aggregate content. The ternary diagram is found to be an effective graphical presentation tool that can be used for the quality evaluation of mortar using blended fine aggregate.

  • When using non KS aggregate muck pile in general, compared to when using KS aggregate, when obtaining an identical slump a high unit quantity of water was confirmed, and when designing the concrete mix the compressive strength of concrete decreased due to an increase in W/B. Therefore because the use of non KS aggregate decreases the liquidity, strength and durability etc. qualities of concrete from an overall performance point of view, there is a need for the used of KS aggregate and when using aggregate that does not adhere to KS standards, it is determined there is a need for appropriate concrete mix design and care.
