  • The volume fraction of the coarse aggregate in the conventional plastic concrete is controlled relatively low to ensure a required workability. In this paper, a new type of coarse aggregate interlocking concrete with strength ranging from C30 to C80 was prepared with scattering-filling aggregate process. The strength of concrete prepared with this method increases obviously whereas the shrinkage decreases significantly, the cement dosage in the concrete decreased 20 % at the same time. The microhardness of the ITZ between the cement paste and scattering-filling aggregate is higher than that of the original aggregate, the ITZ become narrower and tighter also. The interlocking and more even distribution of the coarse aggregate and the water absorption of the addition of extra amount of coarse aggregates contribute to the strength and performance improvement of the concrete prepared with scattering-filling aggregate process.

  • PURPOSES: In this study the influence factors related to abrasion resistance of interlocking concrete block have been evaluated, and comparisons between various domestic and foreign abrasion test methods was also accomplished. METHODS: The modified rotational cutting method suggested in ASTM C 944 was applied. Surface materials with different types of fine aggregate such as crushed sand, sea sand, and mixture of crushed and sea sand were tested to compare the aggregate effect for abrasion resistance. RESULTS: The different surface mixtures with various W/C ratios, mortar and fly ash ratios have been investigated for functional and economical considerations. CONCLUSIONS: This study had obtained reliable results by changing diamond blade of rotating cutter. Therefore, in order to improve the abrasion resistance of interlocking concrete block for road, a new mix design was proposed.

  • In ultra high strength concrete, when electric arc furnace oxidizing slag is substituted for sea sand as fine aggregate, compressive strength was improved about 15 MPa. To figure out the cause of the improvement in compressive strength, this study considered the dissolution characteristics of Ca component in fine aggregate and examined the microstructure, porosity, microhardness, and Ca/Si mole ratio on the interface of fine aggregate and paste. And to examine the mechanism of strength improvement resulted from the shape of fine aggregate, this study measured the surface roughness of fine aggregate with AFM. According to the result of this experiment, the mechanisms of strength improvement in ultra high strength concrete resulted from the use of electric arc furnace oxidizing slag as fine aggregate can be divided into chemical and physical mechanisms. In the chemical mechanism, the soluble Ca component contained in electric arc furnace oxidizing slag is dissolved and forms a hydrate between fine aggregate and paste to improve the interlocking strength of fine aggregate-paste. Also, it makes the microstructure around the fine aggregate. And in the physical mechanism, electric arc furnace oxidizing slag has a twice greater surface roughness than sea sand, so the interlocking strength between fine aggregate and paste increases, which contributes to the development of compressive strength.

  • The incinerated municipal waste can be classified into two general types of ash; fly ash and bottom ash. The fly ash is appointed as specified waste, because it contains harmful heavy metals, ie Pb , Cd, etc. more than permitted standard index. The purpose of this study is to manufacture the non-sintering artificial aggregates using municipal waste incineration fly-ash and to evaluate their applications as coarse aggregates in concrete interlocking block. The test results of water absorpsion, strengths of the concrete block using artificial aggregates showed that the artificial aggregates could be used in part of 10-20% as coarse aggregate in concrete block.

  • Permeable polymer concretes can be applied to roads, sidewalks, river embankment, drain pipes, conduits, retaining walls, yards, parking lots, plazas, interlocking blocks, etc. This study was to explore a possibility of using bottom ash as filler and recycled coarse aggregate of industrial by-products for permeable polymer concrete. The tests carried out at $20{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ and $60{\pm}2%$ relative humidity. At 7 days of curing, unit weight, void ratio, compressive and flexural strength and coefficient of permeability ranged between $1,652{\sim}1,828kgf/m^{3},\;15{\sim}29+%,\;18.2{\sim}24.5\;MPa,\;6.4{\sim}8.4\;MPa\;and\;6.8{\times}10^{-2}{\sim}1.7{\times}10^{-1}\;cm/s$, respectively. It was concluded that the bottom ash and recycled coarse .aggregate can be used in the permeable polymer concrete.

  • Research on permeable pavement like asphalt and concrete pavement with porous structure has been increasing due to environmental and functional need such as reduction of run off and flood, and increase and purification of underwater resource. This study was performed to evaluate permeability, strengths and durability of permeable polymer concrete (PPC) using recycled aggregate that is obtained from waste concrete. Also, 6mm length of polypropylene fiber was used to increase toughness and interlocking between aggregate and aggregate surrounded by binder. In the test results, regardless of kinds of aggregates and fiber contents, the compressive strength and permeability coefficient of all types of PPC showed the higher than the criterion of porous concrete that is used in permeable pavement in Korea. Also, strengths of PPC with increase polypropylene fiber volume fraction showed slightly increased tendency due to increase binder with increase of fiber volume fraction. The weight reduction ratios for PPC after 300 cycles of freezing and thawing were in the range of 1.6~3.8 % and 2.2~5.6 %, respectively. The weight change ratio was very low regardless of the fiber volume fraction and aggregates. The weight reduction ratios of PPC with fiber and aggregate were in the range of 1.3~2.7 % and 2.2~3.2 % after 13 weeks and was very low regardless of the fiber volume fraction and aggregates.

This study was performed to evaluate void ratio, permeability coefficient, and compressive strength of permeable polymer concrete (PPC) using crushed and recycled coarse aggregate that is obtained from waste concrete. Also, 6 mm length of polypropylene fiber was used to increase toughness and interlocking between aggregate and aggregate surrounded by binder. Binder and filler used were unsaturated polyester resin and CaCO3, respectively. The mix proportions were determined to satisfy the requirement for the workability and slump according to aggregate sizes 5~10 mm. In the test results, regardless of kinds of aggregates and fiber contents, the void ratio, permeability coefficient and compressive strength of all types of PPC showed the higher than the criterion of porous concrete that is used in permeable pavement in Korea. Also, strengths of PPC with increase polypropylene fiber volume fraction showed slightly increased tendency due to increase binder with increase of fiber volume fraction. Accordingly, polypropylene fiber and recycled coarse aggregate can be used for permeable pavement.

  • For the protectioon of radioactive leakage, the quality control of main concrete structure in nuclear power plants is very important. So, this studey is designed to analyze the influence of kind of cement and aggregate on the mechanical properties of high density concrete. Test results of this study are as follows; 1)The slump of magnetite aggregate concrete(MAC) is found half value of nat.ural aggregate concrete (NAC). 2)As the effect of cement, the compressive strength of concrete using moderate heat cement is found higher 5-19 % than that of ordinary portland cement. 3)As the effect of fine aggregate, t.he compressive strength of MAC is found higher than that. of NAC below 340kg/$cm^2$ and lower t.han NAC above 340kg/$cm^2$. 4)As the effect of coarse aggregate, the compressive strength of MAC is found higher 17-22% than that of NAC.
