Forty nine clinical isolates of S. aureus showing resistance to erythromycin(EM) were selected from 83 strains isolated recently in Korea. Fourteen strains of S. aureus showing inducible resistance to MLS antibiotics were selected by disc agar diffusion method. Colony hydridization was executed using two MLS inducible resistance genes, ermA and ermC, identified previously from S. aureus as probes. S. aureus 375 and S. aureus 507 whose genes were not homologous to those probes were finally selected. It was confirmed that the resistance genes of S. aureus 375 and S. aureus 507 had no homology with those probes in southern hybridization test using ermA, ermC and ermAM as probes. It was determined that S. aureus 375 had a plasmid whose size was about 35 kb. To know if the plasmid may have the genes related to inducible resistance to MLS antibiotics, it was attempted to transform Bacillus subtillis BR151 and S. aureus RN4220 with the plasmid isolated from S. aureus 375. It was shown that the gene related to inducible resistance to MLS antibiotics did not exist in this plasmid. These results indicate that two clinical isolates of S. aureus showing inducible resistance to MLS antibiotics have novel genes that have no homology with MLS resistance genes identified so far. It is assumed that these genes may exist in chromosomal DNA.
In this study, a chitosan based coating method was developed and applied on the shoe lining leather surface for evaluating its inhibition to bacterial and fungal attacks. At first, chitosan was prepared from raw prawn shells and then the prepared chitosan solution was applied onto the leather surface. Secondly, the characterization of the prepared chitosan and chitosan treated leather was performed by solubility test, ATR-FTIR, XRD pattern, SEM and TGA. Evaluation of antimicrobial efficacy of chitosan was assessed against two gram positive, two gram negative bacteria and a reputed fungi by agar diffusion test. The results of this study demonstrated that chitosan took place in both the surface of collagen fibres and inside the collagen matrix of crust leather. The chitosan showed strong antimicrobial activities against all the tested microorganisms and the inhibition increased with increasing percentage of chitosan. Therefore, the prepared chitosan in this study can be an environment friendly biocide, which functions simultaneously against different spoilage bacteria and fungi on the finished leather surface. Thus by using the prepared chitosan in shoe lining leather, the possibility of microbial attack during shoe wearing can be minimized which is one of the important hygienic requirements of footwear.

Bee venom is synthesized in the venom gland's of worker and queen bees and stored in their venom sacs. Bee venom is a rich source of enzymes, peptides and biogenic amines. there are at least 18 active components in the venom which have some pharmaceutical properties. This study was performed to evaluate minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) of bee venom against bacteria isolated from pjgs and chickens with disease. In case of reference strains, the MIC $({\mu}g/m{\ell})$ of Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175, and Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 6538 were 64, 64 and 32, respectively. In case of bacteria isolated from pig and chicken, the MIC of Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus hyicus and Staphylococcus chromogenes were 8, 128 and 128, and that of 11 strains of Escherichia coli were 8 to >512 and that of 8 strains of Salmonella sup were >512. Antibacterial resistance test of 22 strains isolated from pig and chicken and 3 reference strains were performed by agar gel diffusion method, using 17 antibacterial drugs including penicillin, cefazolin, tetracycline and quinolone group. The multiple drug resistant patterns were found in most strains isolated from pig and chicken.

Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella thyphimurium and S. Montevideo isolated from the intestines of dead broiler chickens in Korea were tested for antibacterial effects to purifed bee venom. Purified bee venom from Apis mellifera L. has been used as natural antimicrobial compounds in pigs, cows, dairy cattle and chicken farms in Korea. To investigate antibacterial effect of purified bee venom was evaluated by agar well diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentraion (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and postantibiotic effect (PAE). Purified bee venom exhibited significant inhibition of bacterial growth of C. perfringens, S. thyphimurium and S. Montevideo with MIC value of 0.85, 0.68 and $0.69{\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The MBC value of purified bee venom against C. perfringens, S. thyphimurium and S. Montevideo were 3.33, 2.66 and $2.86{\mu}g/mL$. Furthermore, the results of PAE values against C. perfringens, S. thyphimurium and S. Montevideo showed the bacterial effect with 3.5, 4.0 and 3.5 hr. Stability of pufifed bee venom at acidity from pH 1 to pH 8 for 24 hr was the antibacterial activity for C. perfringens, S. thyphimurium and S. Montevideo and melittin contents. Also purified bee venom processed through the heating for 15 min, there was no signification loss of the antibacterial activity and melittin at below $100^{\circ}C$. These results obtained in this study suggest that purified bee venom might be utilized as a feed additive in poultry diets.

The aim of the study was performed to examine the anticariogenic potential of purified bee venom (Apis mellifera L., PBV) collected using bee venom collector from cariogenic bacteria, Streptococcus mutans, Streptococcus sanguis, Porphyromonas gingivalis, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. The anticariogenic effect of purified bee venom was evaluated by agar well diffusion method, minimum inhibitory concentraion (MIC), minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), and postantibiotic effect (PAE). The human lower gingiva epithelial cell cytotoxicity of purified bee venom was also evaluated. Purified bee venom exhibited significant inhibition of bacterial growth of S. mutans, S. sanguis, P. gingivalis, and F. nucleatum with MIC value of 0.68, 0.85, 3.49, and $2.79{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The MBC value of purified bee venom against S. mutans, S. sanguis, P. gingivalis, and F. nucleatum was 1.34, 1.67, 8.5, and $6.8{\mu}g/ml$. Furthermore, the results of PAE values against S. mutans, S. sanguis, P. gingivalis, and F. nucleatum showed the bacterial effect with 3.3, 3.45, 2.0, and 2.0. The concentration below 1 mg/ml of purified bee venom had no cytotoxicity in the human lower gingiva epithelial cell. These results suggested that purified bee venom have great potenial as anticariogenic agents.

The clinical specimens used in this study were collected during the period from March 4, to December 30, 1983, from children's hospitals in Seoul area. They came from clinically apparent cases of diarrheal disease in hospitals. Many specimens were taken from rectal Swabs. During this period, 2166 stool cultures were streaked onto MacConkey plate and were them deposited in selenite broth. Colonies resembling pathogens on MacConkey medium were picked to KIA, Urea agar, malonate broth, ONPG broth, SIM. Reaction on those media cultures were identified biochemically with using API 20E test kit and confirmed serologically with commercially avabile Salmonella antisera(Difco) or Shigella antisera(Denka, Japan). The sensitivity of Salmonella and Shigella tested to ampicillin cephalosporin, chloramphenicol, colistin, gentamicin, tetracycline, streptomycin, nalidixic acid, neomycin, polymyxin B was performed by means of disc diffusion method recommended by Bauer-Kirby, using the discs prepared in BBL Laboratory. 1. There were 34 (1.6%) isolations of Salmonella cultures and 52(2.4%) isolations of Shigella from the 2,116 specimens. Only 53%of Salmonella were isolated by direct streaking on MacConkey plating media, by contrast, 80% of the Shigella were isolated directly. 2. Shigella flexneri types comprised 56% of the Shigellae isolate from 52 Shigellae identified 24% of Salmonella enteritidis ser typhimurium were identified. 3. Concerning to Salmonella and Shigella occurance according to month and sex, They shows relatively higher for the male than in case of female, and 2-3 age were shown the highest group. 4. October is the month with highest incidences. 5. In the sensitivity patterns of Shigellae, most of them were appeared to be resistant ampicillin, streptomycin, tetracycline, in case of Salmonella, 15% of them were resistant to chloramphenicol.
Fifty seven species of common seaweed from the coast of Korea were screened for antifungal activity against Malassezia species. Seaweeds as a source of bioactive compounds are able to produce a great variety of secondary metabolites with different activities. There are numerous reports on the biological activities of seaweeds against human pathogens, fungi, and yeasts, but only few contain data regarding inhibitory effects against Malassezia sp., a major cause of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. To help address this paucity of information, this work was carried out to examine the antifungal effects of seaweed extracts against M. furfur and M. restricta. Of the fifty seven species of marine algae screened for their potential antifungal activity, only 17 species (29.8%) exhibited inhibitory activity. In agar disc diffusion method, the ether extracts of Corallina pilulifera, Enteromorpha linza, Laminaria japonica, Symphyocladia latiuscula and Ulva sp. showed strong antifungal activity. To identify major constituents in seaweed extracts, four selected extracts were analyzed on' a GC-MS equipped with a flame ionization detector, and compared to spectral data from databases WILEY229.LIB and NIST107.LIB. Most constituents in seaweed extracts are fatty acid-related compounds. When we evaluated any acute toxicity, the ether extracts of the selected four species were not toxic in mice. According to these results, it can be suggested that these seaweed extracts are valuable for the development of therapeutic agents in treating dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Further investigations to determine its bioactive compound(s) are currently in progress.

Salmonella Enteritidis is responsible for causing foodborne diseases upon consumption of egg products. While cases of S. Enteritidis isolation from eggs have been reported in other countries, no such cases have previously been reported in Korea. In this study, we report the first isolation and identification of S. Enteritidis from domestically distributed eggs in Korea. Eggs were collected from eight countrywide grocery stores during different seasons between 2011 and 2012. Egg contents and washing solution of egg shells were incubated in buffered peptone water, and the enriched broth was further enriched in tetrathionate broth and Rappaport-Vassiliadis. The secondary enriched broth was streaked on xylose lysine desoxycholate agar. The suspected colonies were confirmed to S. Enteritidis by a biochemical test, serotyping, and PCR test. Genetic relatedness among the isolates was analyzed using Diversilab Salmonella kit. Three strains of S. Enteritidis were isolated from egg contents and egg shells collected from grocery stores of the Eumseong-city in the fall of 2011. All three stains showed resistance to chloramphenicol, streptomycin, nalidixic acid, and ampicillin by the disk diffusion method. In addition, the isolates showed more than 99% DNA homology, indicating that they were presumably identical strains. Therefore, there is a requirement to monitor and control against S. Enteritidis from eggs in Korea.

In this study, antimicrobial resistance of E coli isolated from domestic beef on sale in Busan and Gyeongnam province was investigated from March to October 2007. A total of 600 beef samples were collected for the monitoring of antimicrobial resistance, and 92 (15.3%) strains of E coli were isolated. Antimicrobial resistance test was carried out by agar disc diffusion method with 17 antimicrobials. In general, E coli isolates showed the highest antimicrobial resistance to doxycycline (73.9%), followed by tetracycline (70.7%) andcefazolin (63.0%). Then they showed higher resistance to several antimicrobials like norfloxacin (48.9%). However, They had low antimicrobial resistance to amikacin (4.3%), colistin (1.1%). Of 92 isolates, 82 (89.1%) were resistant to more than 2 antimicrobials. Among 17 antimicrobials examined, tetracyclines were the most resistant, followed by cephalosporins, quinolone. The resistance was seemed to be correlated to amounts of antimicrobial use. In the result of this study, we suggest that there be need to regulate the abuse of antimicrobial on food-producing animals in Korea because the concern on antimicrobial resistant is gradually increased worldwide.
In this study, we investigated the biological activity of antioxidant and antibacterial activity of Indigenous Plants, Jeju-Island., which, using methanol were extracted. The reducing activity on the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical and $O^{2-}$ and OH radical scavenging potential, in search for antioxidation activities of Indigenous Plants, were sequentially screened. Among the ten plant parts, Prunella vulgaris var. aleutica Fernald. flower had the highest antioxidative activity. 80% Methanol extracts of ten indigenous plants were screened for antibacterial activity 13 fish pathogenic bacteria by agar diffusion method. Among the various 80% Methanol extracts, the Prunella vulgaris var. aleutica Fernald, Gleichenia japonica Spreng, Microlepia marginata (panzer) Christ., Perilla frutescens var. japonica Hara. showed relatively strong antibacterial activities in the order.
