This study was conducted to find means to reduce the foul smell emitted from chicken manure. Rice water was inoculated with Lactobacillus sakei and then examined to determine the bacterial survival rates during storage, and whether fermentation had occurred. Rice water was an excellent medium for the growth of L sakei, given that a viable cell count was maintained for 15 days during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ and decreased slightly thereafter. Furthermore, microorganisms in chicken manure were separated and 14 species were identified. The antibacterial activity of an L. sakei supernatant against the identified microorganisms was measured using the agar diffusion method. The growth of 11 out of 14 species was inhibited, and only Corynebacterium variabile, Enterococcus faecium, and Raoultella ornithinolytica survived. Rice water was fermented by inoculation with L. sakei and mixed with chicken manure, and the quantities of ammonia, ethyl mercaptan, and hydrogen sulfide were measured after 48 hours. Emissions of ammonia and ethyl mercaptan were reduced significantly.
Staphylococcus aureus is a pathogenic bacterium that causes food poisoning, exhibits a strong capacity to form biofilm, and is highly resistant to antimicrobial agents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the antimicrobial characteristics of corosolic acid against S. aureus. S. aureus showed high susceptibility to corosolic acid in a concentration-dependent manner. The minimum inhibitory concentration and colony-forming ability determined by the broth microdilution method showed that corosolic acid had strong antimicrobial activity against the bacteria. The diameters of the inhibition zone and numbers of colony forming units at each concentration of corosolic acid were also measured. In addition, corosolic acid displayed potent biofilm inhibition activity against S. aureus at concentrations below its minimum inhibitory concentration. These results suggest that corosolic acid can be used to effectively prevent biofilm formation by S. aureus, thereby making S. aureus more susceptible to the action of antimicrobials.

Shigella remains to be an important enteric pathogen in this country for the moment. Moreover, since 1978, most of the isolates have become resistant to ampicillin and co-trimoxazole, which used to be the drugs of choice for shigellosis. Since a disc diffusion technique alone has been used in our routine susceptibility test, the minimum inhibitory concentrations(MIC) of both ampicillin and co-trimoxazole to Shigella have never been known. In order to determine these, 195 isolates were tested by an agar dilution method, all of which were isolated at Yonsei Medical Center during the period of June 1978 to July 1980. The following results were obtained. 1. Sixty cultures(29.7%) were susceptible to ampicillin, being the MIC of 8 ${\mu}g/ml$ or less and 53(27.2%) were susceptible to co-trimoxazole, being the MIC of TMP/SMZ 4/76 ${\mu}g/ml$ or less. S. flexneri type 2 was often resistant to both antimicrobic agents. 2. An increasing rate of resistant isolates was noted, particularly in the year of 1979. 3. Many isolates were resistant to both agents. Somewhat more cultures. were ampicillin susceptible and co-trimoxazole resistant than the other way around. It seems that the determination of species or even serotypes might be of help sometimes to select proper antimicrobic agent to control the infection. A routine antimicrobic susceptibility test of Shigella to both ampicillin and co-trimoxazole would be advisable for a better selection of chemotherapeutic agent.
The effect of hot water and methanol extracts of 9 species from Korean mushrooms (Fomitopsis pinicola, Fomitella traxinea, Codyceps militaris, Phellinus linteus, Coriolus versicolor, Sparassis crispa, Ganoderma lucidum, Fomes fomentarius, Agaricus blazei) on the growth of Helicobacter pylori were examined using a Mueller-Hinton agar diffusion method. Hot water ($121^{\circ}C$) extracts from fruit bodies of F. traxinea, C. militaris, P. linteus, C. versicolor and F. pinicola showed $10{\sim}15\;mm$ inhibition zone against H. pylori. Methanol extracts of F. pinicola showed 44 mm inhibition zone, but another extracts showed no inhibition. Early fractions of DEAE-Sephadex A-25 column chromatography of methanol extracts from F. pinicola showed high inhibition activity against H. pylori.
In order to isolate thermophilic bacteria with high activity of CMCase and xylanase, spent mushroom substrates was collected from an oyster mushroom cultivation farm in Jinju, Gyeongnam, Korea. Among the isolates, one strain designated as YJ09 was selected by agar diffusion method. The isolate YJ09 was identified as a member of Bacillus licheniformis based on biochemical characteristics using Bacillus ID kit and MicroLog system. Comparative 16S rDNA sequence analysis showed that isolate YJ09 formed a distinct phylogenetic tree within the genus Bacillus and was most closely related to Bacillus licheniformis with sequence similarity of 98.9%. Based on its physiological properties, biochemical characteristics and phylogenetic distinctiveness, the isolate YJ09 was classified as Bacillus licheniformis. The CMCase and xylanase activity of B. licheniformis YJ09 was slightly increased corresponding to the bacterial population from exponential phase to stationary phase in the growth curve of B. licheniformis YJ09.
Antimicrobial activity of Korean leek was effective on Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus subtilis, E. coli O157:H7, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Pichia membranaefaciens. Extract from raw Korean leek and that from frozen one showed antimicrobial activity; in contrast, extract stored frozen condition or extract from blanched one lost antimicrobial activity. Filtration, centrifugation, and vacuum concentration did not affect antimicrobial activity of the leek, nor did the changes in storage pHs. Addition of ground leek to soy milk, soy curd, and broth for cold noodle resulted in the prolonged shelf life by significantly reducing the number of viable cells.

Methanol extracts from 84 Indian plant samples (50 species in 31 families) and 27 African plant samples (20 species in 12 families) in vitro were tested for their growth-inhibitory activities against Bifidobacterium bifidum, Bifidobacterium longum, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Clostridium perfringens, and Escherichia coli, using a paper disc agar diffusion method under $O_2-free$ conditions. The responses varied with bacterial strain, plant species and plant part. Extracts from Cymbopogon citratus whole plants, Ocimum basilicum whole plant, Madhuca indica flowers, and Aegle marmelos leaves among Indian plant samples moderately or strongly inhibited the growth of Cl, perfringens whereas moderate growth-inhibitory activity against E. coli was obtained from extract of Indian O. basilicum whole plants. These plant extracts did not affect the growth of the lactic acid forming bacteria tested. These results may be an indication of at least one of the pharmacological actions of these tropical plants.
An antagonistic bacterial strain KLF01 was isolated from rhizosphere of tomato and identified to be Lactobacillus sp. by biochemical and genetic analysis. This strain showed antagonism against the used plant pathogenic bacteria like Ralstonia solanacearum, (bacterial wilt), Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri, (Citrus canker), Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria (Bacterial spot), Eriwinia pyrifoliae (Shoot-blight) and Eriwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora group (Potato scab) through agar well diffusion method. In planta test done by drench application of strain KLF01 $(4{\times}10^8 cfu/ml)$ into the experimental plot containing tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) cultivar 'Lokkusanmaru' and red pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) cultivar 'Buja' plants, in pot test post-inoculated with the plant pathogenic bacteria, R. solanacearum significantly reduced the disease severity, compared to the non-treated plants.
PES UF membranes containing silver were prepared to impart antibacterial properties for waste water treatment. Asymmetric membranes for antibacterial application were prepared from polyethersulfone (PES) and silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) (PES/$AgNO_3$=15/2 by weight) solution in N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) via simple wet phase inversion technique. These membranes were characterized by polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) of different molecular weights (1000 ppm in water) at room temperature and on operating pressure of 5 bars. It was observed that the water flux of PES-$AgNO_3$ membrane is slightly lower than virgin PES but still increased linearly with the increment of pressure applied. The morphology of the resulting membranes was examined using Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscope (FESEM) coupled with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS). Elemental analysis using EDS proved that silver is successfully loaded on the membrane surfaces. Due to the success of loading silver on membrane surfaces, antibacterial activities were evaluated via agar diffusion method against Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S.aureus) culture. By incorporating 2 wt% of silver nitrate, PES-$AgNO_3$ showed significant inhibition ring on both E.coli and S.aureus. Filtration of E.coli solution (OD 0.31) showed satisfactory rejection data with ~100% inhibition growth after 24 hours incubation at $37^{\circ}C$. Resultant membranes also exhibit better tensile strength (compared to virgin PES) up to 71% may be due to the suggested interactions. The residual silver during fabrication was measured using ICP-MS and result showed that the residual silver content of PES-$AgNO_3$ membrane was only ~1% of the original silver added in the polymer solution. These studies have shown that PES-$AgNO_3$ UF membranes are potential in improving the filtration in water treatment.
An endospore-forming, rod-shaped bacterium was isolated from forest soil samples collected at the Taebaek mountain of Gangwon province, Korea, and taxonomically characterized by physiological, biochemical and phylogenetic methods. Its 16S rRNA sequences showed the maximum similarity of 97% with B. amyloliquefaciens. In addition, the isolate BCNU 2002 was determined to have the ability to produce enzymes such as amylase, protease, gelatinase and catalase. The in vitro antifungal activity of Bacillus sp. BCNU 2002 was also examined against human pathogenic fungi such as Aspergillus niger, Candida albicans, Epidermophyton floccosum, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Trichophyton mentagrophytes and Trichophyton rubrum. A maximum production level of antifungal substances of Bacillus sp. BCNU 2002 was achieved under aerobic incubation at $28^{\circ}C$ for 7 days in LB broth. BCNU 2002 showed strong antifungal activities against T. mentagrophytes and T. rubrum with the range of percentage inhibition from 56.25 to 63.23%. It was also confirmed that ethylacetate extract of cultured broth showed a strong antifungal activity against A. niger, C. albicans, S. cerevisiae and T. rubrum by agar diffusion method. The peptide fraction also exhibited broad antifungal spectrum against various pathogenic fungi. The minimum inhibitory concentration values for active extracts ranged between 125 ${\mu}g$/mL and 1000 ${\mu}g$/mL.
