The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between preschoolers'theory of mind and parenting style. The mothers of 66 3- and 4-year-olds were given questionnaires eliciting information about parenting style, SES, number of younger and older siblings, the time child spends with mother. Three variables were positively correlated with theory of mind: age, number of older siblings, and affective parenting style. The time spent with mother was negatively correlated with theory of mind. Factors most strongly affecting theory of mind were child's age and mother's affective parenting style. The resets are consistent with recent research showing that parenting style may be important for theory of mind understanding.
This study examined the effects of perceived marriage conflict, mother's parenting and child's behavior problems on the child abuse. The sample consisted of 428 filth and sixth grade children. Statistical methods used for data analysis were Cronbach's alpha, factor analysis, Pearson's correlation, multiple regression and path analysis. Several major results found from the analysis were as follows. First, the more the child perceived the parent's marriage conflict, the mother's parenting was controlling and the child's behavior was externalized, the more the child was subjected to the physical and verbal abuses. The mother's controlling parenting behavior had a first direct influence on the physical abuse, and the marriage conflict on the verbal abuse. Second, the marriage conflict had direct and indirect positive effects on the physical and verbal abuses through the mother's affective and controlling parenting and the child's externalizing behavior problems. Third, the mother's controlling parenting had direct and indirect positive effects on the physical and verbal abuses through the child's externalizing behavior problems and. And mother's affective parenting had a direct negative effect on the physical and verbal abuses. Fourth, child's externalizing behavior problems had a direct positive effect on the physical and verbal abuse. Fifth, child's sex had an indirect effect on the physical and verbal abuses through mother's affective and controlling parenting. That is, boys were more exposed to the physical and verbal abuses, because mothers more controlled and less affected boys than girls.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the moderating effect of cultural disposition in the relationship between parenting and academic achievement. Five-hundred thirty five middle school students(male 247; female, 288) participated in this study, These students completed parenting scale and Individualism-Collectivism Scale. Academic achievement was calculated using academic scores from language, english, mathematics and science. Collected data were analyzed using multiple regression. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, parenting was significantly associated with academic achievement albeit weak. Second, influence of affective and autonomy parenting on academic achievement for both father and mother were not significant. Third, moderating effects of individualism were significant in only fathers' autonomy parenting. Fourth, moderating effects of collectivism were significant in fathers' affective parenting and autonomy parenting. These results were discussed in relation to pervious studies. Finally limitations were commented and future study were suggested.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Excessive sugar intake is one of the causes associated with obesity and several chronic diseases prevalent in the modern society. This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of parenting variables based on the theory of planned behavior, on the sweetness preferences and sweets intake of children. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Parents and their children (n = 103, aged 5-7 years) were enrolled to participate in a survey for this study, after providing the required informed consent. Parents were asked to fill out a self-administered questionnaire at their residence. The sweetness preference test for children was conducted at a kindergarten (or daycare center) by applying the one-on-one interview method. RESULTS: The children were divided into two clusters categorized by the K-mean cluster analysis: Cluster 1 had higher sweetness preference (0.42 M sugar, 35%; 0.61 M sugar, 65%); Cluster 2 exhibited lower sweetness preference (0.14 M sugar, 9.5%; 0.20 M sugar, 9.5%; 0.29 M sugar, 81%). Cluster 1 had a higher frequency of sweets intake (P < 0.01), and lower sweets restriction (P < 0.05) and nutrition quotient score (P < 0.05). Sweets intake was negatively correlated with the nutritional quotient (r = -0.204, P < 0.05). The behavioral intention of parents was higher in cluster 2 (P < 0.05), while affective attitude, feeding practice, and reward were higher in cluster 1 (P < 0.001, P < 0.05, and P < 0.01, respectively). Furthermore, behavioral intention of parents showed a negative correlation with affective attitude (r = -0.282, P < 0.01) and feeding practice (r = -0.380, P < 0.01), and a positive correlation with subjective norm (r = 0.203, P < 0.05) and parenting attitude (r = 0.433, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that the sweetness preferences and sweets intake of children is related to the parent's affective attitude, feeding practice and reward. We suggest that to reduce the sugar consumption of children, guidelines for access to sweets and pertinent parenting practices are required.
The purpose of this study is to identify the common factors that affect adolescents, drinking and delinquency. Previous studies have supported that parenting is the most important variable to explain adolescents' drinking and delinquency. For study, 497 adolescents from middle schools and high schools in Inchon city, Korea, were recruited. Instrument for measurement consists of affective-tie and supervision regarding parenting, drinking, and delinquency. Stepwise multiple regression was used as a main statistical analysis. According to the results, even though there is some association between drinking and delinquency, this study found that the most strong predictable variable in explaining adolescents' drinking and delinquency is parenting. That is to say, effective parenting can contribute to prevent adolescents's drinking and delinquency. Therefore, this study suggests that social services and programs to support effective parenting should be provided.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite the importance of consuming sufficient amounts of vegetables, daily vegetable intake among adolescents in Korea is lower than the current dietary recommendation. The objective of this study was to examine determinants affecting vegetable preference in order to suggest a stage-tailored education strategy that can promote vegetable consumption in adolescents. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Adolescents (n = 400, aged 16-17 years) from two high schools participated in a cross-sectional study. Survey variables were vegetable preference, the social cognitive theory (SCT) and stages of change (SOC) constructs. Based on vegetable preference, subjects were classified into two groups: a low-preference group (LPG) and a high-preference group (HPG). SOC was subdivided into pre-action and action/maintenance stages. To compare SCT components and SOC related to vegetable preference, chi-squared and t-tests, along with stepwise multiple-regression analysis, were applied. RESULTS: In the LPG, a similar number of subjects were classified into each stage. Significant differences in self-efficacy, affective attitudes, and vegetable accessibility at home and school were detected among the stages. Subjects in the HPG were mainly at the maintenance stage (81%), and there were significant differences among the stages regarding self-efficacy, affective attitudes, and parenting practice. In the predictions of vegetable preference, self-efficacy and parenting practice had a significant effect in the "pre-action" stage. In the action/maintenance stage, outcome expectation, affective attitudes, and vegetable accessibility at school had significant predictive value. In predicting the vegetable preference for all subjects, 42.8% of the predictive variance was accounted for by affective attitudes, self-efficacy, and vegetable accessibility at school. CONCLUSION: The study revealed that different determinants affect adolescent vegetable preference in each stage. Self-efficacy and affective attitudes are important determinants affecting vegetable preference. Additionally, school-based nutrition intervention that focuses on enhancing affective attitudes, self-efficacy, and vegetable exposure may constitute an effective education strategy for promoting vegetable consumption among adolescents.
This study investigated the effect of the children's perceived parenting behaviors on their aggression. Subjects were 309 (156 boys and 153 girls) 5th and 6th grade elementary school children living in Jellanamdo. The questionnaire for the children's parenting behavior evaluation and their aggression was used. The data were analyzed by frequencies, Cronbach' ${\alpha}$, t-test and multiple regression. Results showed that the children perceived their parents affectionately and rationally and especially, they perceived their mother affectionately and rationally than their father. Meantime, the children perceived their aggression at a low level on the whole. Parenting behavior and children's aggression differed according to the gender. Fathers' coercive and mothers' permissive parenting predicted the children's proactive aggression. Fathers' coercive, affective and mother's aggression-compensatory parenting predicted children's reactive aggression. Fathers' coercive parenting was only significant predictor for the children's relational aggression and fathers' coercive, aggression- compensatory parenting predicted children's total aggression. Fathers' participation for reducing children's aggression was discussed.
The purposes of this study are to explore mother's involvement in children's education and to examine its impacts on the school adjustment of poor family children. A total of 171 low-income mothers and their children attending middle school completed a structured questionnaire. Overall, the results show that the mothers tend to involve in their children's education to some degree. But the extent of maternal involvement is not uniform across the types of involvement. In order to analyze factors that affect the school adjustment which is measured as grades and attitudes toward school life, path analysis is perfomed. The affective parenting is found to have indirect effects on school adjustment of middle school students through maternal involvement in their children's education.
This study is to examine the effects of smartphone addiction on the mothers' parenting efficacy and parenting attitude. This study consisted of 203 smartphone using mothers of preschoolers in Gyonggi-do. The measurements included smartphone addiction scale(National Information Society Agency, 2011), the parenting efficacy scale(Choi & Chung, 2001), and the parenting attitude scale(Bae, 2005). Theses analyses were included in the Pearson correlation coefficient, the T-test, and the Hierarchical regression analysis. The findings indicated that the younger mothers showed higher levels of smartphone addiction. The results of smartphone addiction subscales on parenting efficacy indicated that the disturbance of adaptive functioning was related with general parenting ability, healthy parenting ability, communication ability, and learning guidance ability. The results of smartphone addiction subscales on parenting attitude showed that the disturbance of adaptive functioning was positively related with rejective parenting attitude and virtual life orientation was negatively associated with affective and autonomous parenting attitude. These findings can emphasize parents' appropriate smartphone use, and be useful resources to develop and utilize the programs of positive parenting efficacy and parenting attitude.
This study sought to develop a 'Meaning of Parenting Scale for Mothers(MPS-M)' in order to measure how Korean mothers perceive the meaning of parenting. To this end, in Study I, a preliminary scale was designed, based firstly on socio-cultural and evolutionary psychological perspectives and secondly on the responses from 118 mothers concerning meaning of parenting. This was followed up by the collection of 887 mothers' responses to the preliminary scale, which then underwent exploratory factor analysis for scale revision. In Study 2, confirmatory factor analysis was conducted on a collection of responses from 548 mothers using the revised scale. Concurrent validity was tested using a parenting stress scale, and reliability was then checked by conducting calculations for internal consistency. As a result, the MPS-M was finally developed, consisting of 25 items under six factors: 'Internal Maturity', 'Restoration of Naturality', 'Familial Union', 'Physical Burden', 'Affective Disorientation', and 'Comprehensive Loss'. Accordingly, the meaning of parenting was statistically confirmed as a hierarchical two-sided concept possessing six factors under positive and negative meaning categories.
