  • The finite element analyses of a composite hingeless rotor blade in forward flight have been performed to investigate the influence of blade design parameters on the blade stability. The blade structure is represented by a single cell composite box-beam and its nonclassical effects such as transverse shear and torsion-related warping are considered. The nonlinear periodic differential equations of motion are obtained by moderate deflection beam theory and finite element method based on Hamilton principle. Aerodynamic forces are calculated using the quasi-steady strip theiry with compressibility and reverse flow effects. The coupling effects between the rotor blade and the fuselage are included in a free flight propulsive trim analysis. Damping values are calculated by using the Floquet transition matrix theory from the linearized equations perturbed at equilibrium position of the blade. The aeroelastic results were compared with an alternative analytic approch, and they showed good correlation with each other. Some parametric investigations for the helicopter design variables, such as pretwist and precone angles are carried out to know the aeroelastic behavior of the rotor.

  • This paper presents an aeroelastic analysis procedure to highlight the influence of wind velocity on the structural damping and frequency of a long span cable-stayed bridge. Frequency dependent self-excited forces in terms of flutter derivatives are expressed as continuous functions using rational function approximation technique. The aeroelastically modified structural equation of motion is expressed in terms of frequency independent modal state-space parameters. The modal logarithmic dampings and frequencies corresponding to a particular wind speed are then determined from the eigen solution of the state matrix.

  • In this paper, an efficient and robust analysis system for the flutter optimization of laminated composite wings has been developed using the coupled computational method based on the genetic algorithm. General three-dimensional doublet-lattice method is efficiently used to compute generalized aerodynamic forces of T-tail configuration in the frequency domain. Structural dynamic analyses of laminated composite T-tail models are conducted using finite clement method. The classical P-k flutter analysis technique is applied to effectively solve the aeroelastic governing equations in the frequency domain. Optimum design studies using genetic algorithm have been conducted in order to obtain maximum flutter stability of a composite T-tail configuration. The results show that flutter stability can be significantly increased using composite materials with proper optimum design concepts even for the same weight and shape condition. In the view point of engineering design, it is also importantly shown that the optimization of the vertical wing part is highly effective comparing to the optimization of horizontal wing part.

  • An advanced aeroelastic analysis using a computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is presented in this Paper. A general aeroelastic analysis system is originally developed and applied to realistic design problems in the transonic flow region, where strong shock wave interactions exist. The present computational approach is based on the modal-based coupled nonlinear analysis with the matched-point concept and adopts the high-speed parallel processing technique on the low-cost network based PC-clustered machines. It can give very accurate and useful engineering data on the structural dynamic design of advanced flight vehicles. For the nonlinear unsteady aerodynamics in high transonic flow region, Euler equations using the unstructured grid system have been applied to easily consider complex configurations. It is typically shown that the advanced numerical approach can give very realistic and practical results for design engineers and safe flight tests. One can find that the present study conducts a virtual flutter flight test which are usually very dangerous in reality.

  • The objective of the investigation is the analysis of wind-tunnel experimental errors, associated with the measurement of aeroelastic coefficients of bridge decks (Scanlan flutter derivatives). A two-degree-of-freedom experimental apparatus is used for the measurement of flutter derivatives. A section model of a closed-box bridge deck is considered in this investigation. Identification is based on free-vibration aeroelastic tests and the Iterative Least Squares method. Experimental error investigation is carried out by repeating the measurements and acquisitions thirty times for each wind tunnel speed and configuration of the model. This operational procedure is proposed for analyzing the experimental variability of flutter derivatives. Several statistical quantities are examined; these quantities include the standard deviation and the empirical probability density function of the flutter derivatives at each wind speed. Moreover, the critical flutter speed of the setup is evaluated according to standard flutter theory by accounting for experimental variability. Since the probability distribution of flutter derivatives and critical flutter speed does not seem to obey a standard theoretical model, polynomial chaos expansion is proposed and used to represent the experimental variability.
