  • The lift and drag forces produced by a wing of a given cross-sectional profile are dependent on the wing planform and the angle of attack. Aspect ratio is the ratio of the wing span to the average chord. For conventional fixed wing aircrafts, high aspect ratio wings produce a higher lift to drag ratio than low ones for flight at subsonic speeds. Therefore, high aspect ratio wings are used on aircraft intended for long endurance. However, birds and insects flap their wings to fly in the air and they can change their wing motions. Their wing motions are made up of translation and rotation. Therefore, we tested flapping motions with parameters which affect rotational motion such as the angle of attack and the wing beat frequency. The half elliptic shaped wings were designed with the variation of aspect ratio from 4 to 11. The flapping device was operated in the water to reduce the wing beat frequency according to Reynolds similarity. In this study, the aerodynamic forces, the time-averaged force coefficients and the lift to drag ratio were measured at Reynolds number 15,000 to explore the aerodynamic characteristics with the variation of aspect ratio. The maximum lift coefficient was turned up at AR=8. The mean drag coefficients were almost same values at angle of attack from $10^{\circ}$ to $40^{\circ}$ regardless of aspect ratio, and the mean drag coefficients above angle of attack $50^{\circ}$ were decreased according to the increase of aspect ratio. For flapping motion the maximum mean lift to drag ratio appeared at AR=8.

  • Aerodynamic design of a vehicle has very important meaning on the fuel economy, dynamic stability and the noise & vibration of a moving vehicle. In this study, the correlation of aerodynamic effect between two model vehicles moving inline on a road was studied with the basic SAE model vehicle. Drag and lift are two main physical forces acting on the vehicle and both of them directly effect on the fuel economy and driving stability of the vehicle. For the research, the distance between two vehicles is varied from 5m to 30m at the fixed vehicle speed, 100km/h and the side-wind was assumed to be zero. The main issue for this numerical research is on the understanding of the interaction forces; lift and drag between two vehicles formed inline. From the study, it was found that as the distance between two vehicles is closer, the drag force acting on both the front and rear vehicle decreases and the lift force has same trend for both vehicle. As the distance(D) is 5m, the drag of the front vehicle reduced 7.4% but 28.5% for the rear-side vehicle. As the distance is 30m, the drag of the rear vehicle is still reduced to 22% compared to the single driving.

  • The large eddy simulation (LES) of the flow around a circular cylinder is not only affected by the sub-grid scale (SGS) model but also by the grid resolution of the computational domain. To study the influence of different grids on the LES results, the LES simulations of the flow around a circular cylinder with different grids at Reynolds number (Re) = 3900 was performed. A circular computational domain with different radial growth rates and circumferential and spanwise grid numbers was adopted for the simulations. Meanwhile, the aerodynamic forces, wind pressure coefficients, mean and instantaneous flow fields, and the effect of grid resolution on them were comprehensively analyzed. The results indicate that the lift coefficient, wind pressure coefficient, and recirculation length are significantly affected by the radial growth rate of the grid and the circumferential grid number. The spanwise grid number has a significant influence on the three-dimensionality of the flow and plays an important role in velocity fluctuations in the wake region. Nevertheless, the aerodynamic coefficients and recirculation length are not sufficiently sensitive to the grid number in the spanwise direction. By comparing the results, it can be concluded that suitable and reliable LES results can be obtained when the radial growth rate is 1.03 or 1.05, the circumferential grid number is 160, 200, or 240, and the spanwise grid number is 64. A radial growth rate 1.05, circumferential grid number 160, and spanwise grid number 64 are recommended to reduce the grid amount and further improve the efficiency.

  • In this study, two steady RANS turbulence models (SST k-ω and Realizable k-ε) and four unsteady turbulence models (URANS SST k-ω and Realizable k-ε, SST-SAS, and SST-IDDES) are evaluated with respect to their capacity to predict crosswind characteristics on high-speed trains (HSTs). All of the numerical simulations are compared with the wind tunnel values and LES results to ensure the accuracy of each turbulence model. Specifically, the surface pressure distributions, time-averaged aerodynamic coefficients, flow fields, and computational cost are studied to determine the suitability of different models. Results suggest that the predictions of the pressure distributions and aerodynamic forces obtained from the steady and transient RANS models are almost the same. In particular, both SAS and IDDES exhibits similar predictions with wind tunnel test and LES, therefore, the SAS model is considered an attractive alternative for IDDES or LES in the crosswind study of trains. In addition, if the computational cost needs to be significantly reduced, the RANS SST k-ω model is shown to provide relatively reasonable results for the surface pressures and aerodynamic forces. As a result, the RANS SST k-ω model might be the most appropriate option for the expensive aerodynamic optimizations of trains using machine learning (ML) techniques because it balances solution accuracy and resource consumption.

  • Objective: This study aims to compare the basic aerodynamic characteristics of the official Qatar World Cup soccer ball with those of the official Korean soccer balls. Method: In this study, wind tunnel experiments were conducted to compare the fundamental aerodynamic properties of two commonly used domestic soccer balls, the Star and Nassau, with the Al Rihla, the official ball of the 2022 Qatar World Cup. Results: The findings revealed that the Nassau soccer ball exhibited changes in aerodynamic characteristics depending on its orientation, particularly at low speeds (below 15 m/s), while the Al Rihla showed variations in aerodynamic characteristics at medium to high speeds (15 m/s to 35 m/s) based on its orientation. Furthermore, the results of lift and side force variations indicated that the Star soccer ball exhibited larger changes compared to other soccer balls, suggesting that it may exhibit the most irregular flight path during strong shots (around 30 m/s or approximately 100 km/h). However, there were no differences in aerodynamics observed among the soccer balls in the medium-speed range (20~25 m/s). Conclusion: The comparison of aerodynamics between the Korean soccer balls and the most recently used World Cup official ball showed that, while the Korean balls exhibited slightly greater changes in lift and side forces compared to the World Cup ball, there were no significant differences in most of the aerodynamic characteristics.

  • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used to explore the influence of vibration frequency and amplitude on the aerodynamic performance of a rectangular cylinder with an aspect ratio of B/D=5 (B: breadth; D: depth of cylinder) at a Reynolds number of 22,000 near resonance frequency. In smooth flow conditions, the research employs a sequence of three-dimensional simulations under forced vibration with diverse frequency ratios fe / fo = 0.8-1.2 (fe : oscillation frequency; fo : Strouhal frequency when the rectangular cylinder is stationary ) and oscillation amplitudes Ah/D = 0.05 - 0.3. The individual influences of fe / fo and Ah/D on the characteristics of integrated and distributed aerodynamic forces are the focal points of discussion. For the integrated aerodynamic force, particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of the dependence of velocity-proportional component C1 and displacement-proportional component C2 of unsteady aerodynamic force on amplitude and frequency ratio. Near the resonance frequency, the dependencies of C1 and C2 on amplitude are stronger than that of frequency ratio. For the distributed aerodynamic force, the increase in frequency and amplitude promotes the position of the main vortex core and reattachment to the leading edge in the streamwise direction. In the spanwise direction, vibration enhances the spanwise correlation of aerodynamic force to weaken the three-dimensional effect of the flow field, and a lower frequency ratio and larger amplitude amplify this effect.

  • The aerodynamic features of a pantograph of a high speed train are analyzed according to shapes of pantograph covers. For this purpose, two types of pantograph covers were selected: a wedge type cover and a cone type cover. Then, the change of the aerodynamic forces of the pantograph affected by each type of the pantograph cover was computed. These results were compared with the original lift force of the pantograph. From the results, the cone type cover changes the flow direction from side to side compared with the wedge type cover. Consequently, it is confirmed that the effect of the wedge type cover on the lift force of pantograph is smaller than that of the cone type cover.

  • To investigate the motion-induced aeroelastic effects (or aerodynamic feedback effects) on a square cylinder in uniform flow, a series of wind tunnel tests involving the pressure measurement of a rigid model (RM) and simultaneous measurement of the pressure and vibration of an aeroelastic model (AM) have been systematically carried out. More specifically, the aerodynamic feedback effects on the structural responses, on the mean and root-mean-square wind pressures, on the power spectra and coherence functions of wind pressures at selected locations, and on the aerodynamic forces were investigated. The results indicated the vibration in the lock-in range made the shedding vortex more coherent and better organized, and hence presented unfavorable wind-induced effects on the structure. Whereas the vibration in the non-lock-in range generally showed insignificant effects on the flow structures surrounding the square cylinder.

  • The aerodynamically excited vibration and natural frequency of rotating disks are analytically studied in this paper. The theoretical analysis uses a fluid-structure model where the aerodynamic effects are represented in terms of elastic, lift and drag forces. The explicit expressions on natural frequencies of the air coupled disk are obtained as functions of the aerodynamic coefficients. for the three cases where the disk rotates in three different cases (in vacuum, in open air without enclosure, and close to rigid wall). The theoretical results give that the natural frequencies of rotating disks in air are smaller than those in vacuum, because the effect of the added fluid mass decreases the frequencies. This paper also proposes an analytical method to predict the flutter speed of a rotating disk.

  • Drag, lift, and pitching moment measurements have been made on a range of slanted-base ogive cylinders, using the KANOMAX wind tunnel and balance system. Test Reynolds numbers(based on model maximum diameter) varied from $0.54{\times}10^{5}{\;}to{\;}1.56{\times}10^{5}$. Crossflow velocity maesurement was conducted by 5-hole pitot tube at $Re_{D}=1.46{\times}10^{5}$. For two base angle $({\theta}=30$ and 45 deg.), aerodynamic forces and moment were measured with increasing angle of attack(0~30 deg.). Two types of wake flow were observed, a quasisymetric turbulent closure or a longitudinal vortex flow. Aerodynamic characteristics differ dramatically between the two wake types. It was found that the drag, lift and pitching moment coefficients increased with increasing angle of attack.
