This review article highlights different types of nano-sized catalysts for the selective alcohol oxidation to form aldehydes (or ketones) with supported or immobilized metal nanoparticles. Metal nanoparticle catalysts are obtained through dispersing metal nanoparticles over a solid support with a large surface area. The nanocatalysts have wide technological applications to industrial and academic fields such as organic synthesis, fuel cells, biodiesel production, oil cracking, energy conversion and storage, medicine, water treatment, solid rocket propellants, chemicals and dyes. One of main reactions for the nanocatalyst is an aerobic oxidation of alcohols to produce important intermediates for various applications. The oxidation of alcohols by supported nanocatalysts including gold, palladium, ruthenium, and vanadium is very economical, green and environmentally benign reaction leading to decrease byproducts and reduce the cost of reagents as opposed to stoichiometric reactions. In addition, the room temperature alcohol oxidation using nanocatalysts is introduced.
Background and Objective: Cardiotoxicity and oxidative stress is a life-threatening side effect of doxorubicin (DOX). We investigate the effects of short-term exercise as therapeutic tool for improvement of cardioprotection against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in the rat. Methods: Wistar males (weighing $257{\pm}28g$) were divided into six groups: (1) control+placebo (2) control+DOX $10mg.kg^{-1}$ (3) control+DOX $20mg.kg^{-1}$ (4) training+placebo (5) training+ DOX$10mg.kg^{-1}$ (6) training+DOX $20mg.kg^{-1}$. Cardiotoxicity was induced by DOX (10 and $20mg.kg^{-1}$). The rats in groups 4, 5 and 6 experienced treadmill running of 25 to $39min.day^{-1}$ and 15 to $17m.min^{-1}$, 5 days/wk for 3 wk. At the end of the endurance training program, rats in the 1 and 4 groups, in the 2 and 5 groups and in the 3 and 6 groups received saline solution, DOX $10mg.kg^{-1}$ and DOX $20mg.kg^{-1}$, respectively. Result: DOX administration (10 and $20mg.kg^{-1}$) caused significant increase in MDA and Apelin, an insignificant increase in NO and a significant decrease in SOD, as compared to the C+P group. Three weeks of the pretreatment endurance exercise resulted in a significant increase of Apelin and SOD, an insignificant increase of NO and an insignificant decrease of MDA, as compared to the C+P group. Furthermore, after three weeks of endurance training and DOX treatment with $10mg.kg^{-1}$ and $20mg.kg^{-1}$, a significant increase in apelin and SOD, and a significant decrease in MDA were detected in comparison to C+DOX10 and/or C+DOX20 groups. There was a significant difference between DOX$10mg.kg^{-1}$ and DOX$20mg.kg^{-1}$ treatments in MDA levels only. Conclusion: Pretreatment exercise may improve myocardial tolerance to DOX-induced cardiotoxicity by inhibition of oxidative stress and up-regulation of antioxidants in heart tissue.

Copper possesses antimicrobial properties against certain bacteria and fungi. In this study, changes in microbial population, color and the antioxidant properties of dried red pepper powder (RPP) by contact with the surface of a copper plate were investigated. Lightness of RPP increased after treatment on the copper plate for 2 h at 55℃. The numbers of total aerobic mesophilic bacteria in RPP increased by 0.61 and 0.50 log on the surface of stainless steel and copper plates during 24 h at 37℃, respectively. The population of yeast and mold was reduced by 90% in the RPP treated on both copper and stainless steel plates under the same condition. Yeast and mold were significantly reduced on the copper plate during 2 h at 55℃. Scavenging activities of RPP treated on the copper plate for 24 h at 37℃ against DPPH radical were decreased; those for 2 h at 55℃ against ABTS radical were rather enhanced. The results suggest that copper might be applied in the processing and storage equipment in relation to RPP products for antimicrobial purposes.
Effects of various factors on the phenol degradation by activated sludge immobilized with the photo-crosslinked resin were investigated. The optimum pH on the degradation of phenol in both free and immobilized activated sludge was 7. When the pH of the reaction was varied from 5 to 10, the relative activity of the phenol degradation by the immobilized activated sludge was higher than that by the free activated sludge. A higher rate of phenol degradation was observed when a bead size was smaller. The phenol degradation in the free activated sludge was inhibited at the 3000 mg/L of phenol, while that in the immobilized activated sludge was maintained at the same concentration for 28 hrs without an inhibition. The degradation rates of phenol were not directly proportional to the increasing amount of immobilized beads dosage, but the phenol degradation was made in a rather short time than that for a free sludge system. The relative activities of the immobilized activated sludge after 7 runs of repeated reactions increased about 8 times as that of the first reaction. The activities for the phenol degradation remained stable for at least 80 days when the immobilized activated sludge was stored at an aerobic condition in the wastewater containing phenol. The loading rate as high as 5.59 kg-pheno1/㎥.d could have been achieved during the continuous treatment of phenol by the immobilized activated sludge.

The purpose of the study was to assess the effects of a 12 weeks aged garlic extract (AGE) regimen with regular exercise on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in postmenopausal women. A total of 30 postmenopausal women ($54.4{\pm}5.4$ years) were randomly divided into the following four groups: Placebo (Placebo; n = 6), AGE intake (AGEI; n = 8), exercise and placebo (Ex + Placebo; n = 8), exercise and AGE (Ex + AGE; n = 8) groups. The AGE group consume 80 mg per day, and exercise groups performed moderate exercise (aerobic and resistance) three times per week. After 12 weeks of treatment, body composition, lipid profile, and CVD risk factors were analyzed. Body weight was significantly decreased in AGEI, Ex + Placebo, and Ex + AGE groups compared to baseline. Body fat % was significantly decreased in the AGEI and Ex + Placebo groups. Body mass index (BMI) was significantly decreased in the AGEI, Ex + Placebo, and Ex + AGE groups. Fat-free mass was significantly decreased in the AGEI group. Total cholesterol (TC) was significantly lower in the Ex + Placebo compared to the Placebo group. AGE supplementation or exercise effectively reduced low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C). Triglyceride (TG) was significantly increased in the AGEI group. Malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were significantly decreased in the AGEI, Ex + Placebo, and Ex + AGE compared to the placebo group. AGE supplementation reduced homocysteine levels regardless of whether the women also exercised. The present results suggest that AGE supplementation reduces cardiovascular risk factors independently of exercise in postmenopausal women.
Recently many researches on plaque removal effect and therapeutic effect of toothpaste containing natural medicines are being studied in early periodontal diseases. The purpose of this study is to examine the clinical and microbiological effect of toothpaste containing natural medicines such as camomile, rhatany, myrrh, sage oil, glycyrrhetinic acid and vitamin E. Sixty three subjects with gingivitis were divided into an experimental group which performed normal oral hygiene procedure with toothpaste containing natural medicines and vitamine E and a control group which also performed normal oral hygiene procedure with Syrinmed? toothpaste without containing herbal extracts and vitamine E. At the baseline, 2 weeks, and 4 weeks, subjects were analyzed for clinical study and microbiological study. After 2 weeks and 4 weeks use of their respective toothpastes, statistically significant decreases of gingival index, plaque index, and bleeding index were shown in both the control and the experimental group. The degree of decrease was more significant in the experimental group than the control group. A statistically significant decrease of pocket depth, and gingival crevicular fluid were shown in both the control and lie experimental group. A statistically significant increase of cocci was shown in both the control and the experimental group, the degree of increase was more significant in the experimental group than control group. A statistically significant decrease ofnon-motile rods, and motile rods were shown in both the control and the experimental group, the degree of decrease was more significant in the experimental group than the control group. Spirochetes increased weakly in both the control and the experimental group but a statistic significance was not shown. A statistically significant decrease of anaerobic bacteria, aerobic bacteria, and black pigmented Bacteroides were shown in both the control and the experimental group. These results indicate that the use of toothpaste containing natural medicines is effective in the prevention and the treatment of periodontal diseases.
A wastewater purifying system using phototrophic bacterium, Rhodopseudomonas capsulata, is currently in operation in several countries, One of them, is a continuously aerated bioreactor(CABR) system, which treats concentrated swin wasterwater using small amounts of phototrophic bacteria as additive bacterial seeding. Using this plant, total biochemical oxygen demand was decreased to 13%, and most of volatile fatty acids were removed. About 40% of the wastewater(Influx) was evaporated during aerobic digestion for 24h, and 60% of that erupted in a decodorized foam(Efflux). The efflux had enough nutrients, N, P and K kor growing plant, as well as organic matters. When the efflux was applied to Italian ryegrass with high dose, fresh shoot and root weights were significantly greater, and $NO_3-N$ contents of the dried shoot were lower than those of control plant (CDU). These results indicate that the CABR plant is useful for reduction and deodorization of swine wastewater and the efflux from CABR can be used for crop production as an organic fertilizer.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of 12-week complex training program on foot pressure patterns of the elderly women. The training program consisted of aerobic exercise and muscular training for 12 weeks. Two stages of walking were given to the participants before and after treatment: (a) straight walking; and (b) turn at $45^{\circ}$ while walking. Data related to foot-pressure distribution(FPD) while walking were collected from each stage and analyzed. Results indicated that in both stage of walking, the mean of the foot pressure(FP) was significantly reduced after the participation in the program. Results also revealed that in all stages, the patterns of the FPD and the center of pressure(COP) were widely lower and more stable. Based on the results of this study, it was concluded that participating in a 12-week complex program bas impact on the gait patterns of the elderly women, reducing the foot pressure on their shoes.
This study was conducted to investigate the changes in the qualify of gamma-irradiated seasoned cuttle during storage. Seasoned cuttle packed in PVC film (0.06 win) was stored at $15{\pm}1^{\circ}C$ for 6 months after treatment with doses of 0 to 7 kGy. Microbial populations of seasoned cuttle were $1.6{\times}10^{5}CFU/g$ in total aerobic bacteria, $10^{4}{\sim}10^{5}CFU/g$ in yeasts &molds, and negative in coliforms, which were effectively reduced by 3 kCy or higher up to the undetectable level(<20 CFU/g). The pH and moisture content of the samples were not changed with irradiation, but moisture was some decreased during storage. The instrumental color (especially Hunter b value), pigments (lipophilic &hydrophilic) and TBA value of the samples increased with storage time as well as irradiation dose more than 3 kGy. The influence of storage condition, however, were more significant. Irradiation did not induce any changes in volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) and trimethylamine (TMA) contents, thereby maintaining their contents lower than those of the non-irradiated samples during storage by reducing the microbial load.

To develop a yogurt for sensitive consumer such as infants, children or immuno-compromised patients using gamma irradiation, the effects of gamma irradiation on the microbiological, chemical, and sensory quality in a commercial plain yogurt were investigated. No viable coliform bacteria were detected in the sample and approximately a 6 decimal reduction was achieved in the number of total aerobic bacteria by irradiation at 5 kGy. The initial population of lactic acid bacteria observed in the commercial plain yogurt was 8.95 log CFU/g. Gamma irradiation significantly reduced the initial microbial level to 6.47 and 2.85 log CFU/g after irradiation at 1 and 3 kGy, respectively (p<0.05). However, irradiation dose up to 5 kGy could not completely eliminate the lactic acid bacteria in commercial plain yogurt. pH, color, lactose and lactic acid content, and sensory quality were not affected by irradiation treatment and storage. Our results suggest that irradiation can improve the microbial quality of commercial plain yogurt without impairing the physicochemical and sensory quality.
