  • South Korea should not be in subordinate position in international relationships like the past. As the status of middle power. South Korea achieves peaceful unification through overcoming North Korea's nuclear and conventional threats, and builds military power in Northeast Asia as a 'balancer'. This can firstly be achieved by constructing "attack systems triad". 'attack systems triad' can be established through integrating the C41SR as a common strategy for the purposes of preemptive deterrence and retaliatory deterrence against the dangers of the present and the future. Second, denial deterrence can be achieved by establishing "defense system triad" by combining common military power and defensive weapon system. Finally, development of independent advanced technological strategies can be achieved by building defense industry and combination of research and development through constructing "Infra triad". As for constructing and reinforcing the future of the ROK military, a unilateral principle and policy efforts to achieve the aforementioned force construction models are needed. This can only be achieved through the government's national vision to take on the role of mediator and a basis founded upon the consensus of the public.

  • In the design of an automotive structural component, one of the more important tasks for a design engineer is to determine the life of the component and to ensure that the component will not fail prematurely. In order to accomplish this, a design engineer will first use simple section analysis to come up with a section shape in the concept design stage and use more advanced analysis for stress level. At this stage, the analysis should focus on understanding overall behavior in terms of load paths and gross stress levels. A model that is adequate for a stiffness analysis of the structure will usually provide an adequate level of stress information in the design process. To perform a detailed stress analysis, the structure models must have the detailed local areas such as stress concentrations or force(or displacement) distributions. This paper is to present the design considerations for the stress analysis of automotive structure.

  • The main motivation for this study was to establish a CFD-based procedure for the analysis of heating characteristics, particularly in industrial furnaces. As certain open-source software packages have gained popularity in dealing with complex industrial problems, the OpenFOAM framework was selected for further development of advanced physical models to meet industrial requirements. In this study, the newly developed comprehensive model was applied to simulate physical processes in the full-scale horizontal furnace of a continuous galvanizing line (CGL). The numerical results obtained indicate that the current approach predicts heating characteristics reasonably well. It was also found that radiative heat transfer plays a dominant role in heating the moving strip. To improve the predictability of our method, further work is required to model the turbulence-chemistry interaction realistically, as well as to impose a physically correct thermal wall boundary condition.

  • In this paper, the strength analysis has been presented for the stress and strain by using the finite element method for various shell models of the helmets. The advanced helmet that would provide head protection without causing discomfort to the user when it was worn for long periods of time should be manufactured for increasing the safety and workability of the workers. We need a safe, comfortable and light weight of the helmet shell structure. Thus, the helmets had to stand up to the most rigorous conditions encountered for the fire and gas explosion. The FEM computed results show that when the impulsive force is applied on the summit area of a helmet shell structure, the maximum stress and strain have been occurred around the position of an applied impact force, which may lead to the initial failure on the summit of the helmet shell. Thus, the summit area of the helmet shell should be supported by a bead frame and increased thickness of the bead. But the overall thickness of the helmet is to decrease for the light weight of a helmet.

Collaboration to Enhance Development and Application of Shiphandling Simulators

  • It has been well proved that shiphandling simulators are efficient and useful facilities for training and education of cadets and seafarers. Most of the maritime universities and many maritime training institutes all over the world have installed shiphandling simulators, which play important roles in maritime education and training. However, most of the Shiphandling simulators are standalone facilities with diversities on system architectures, layouts and functions. STCW78/95 requires simulators used for simulator-based training shall be suitable for the selected objectives and training tasks. To ensure the shiphandling simulator facilities meet the requirements of STCW convention and other expanded applications, collaborated research and coordination are needed in development and application of shiphandling simulators. Performance standard should be established for shiphandling simulator systems considering the advanced research needs as well as the needs in education, training, and assessment of competence. Standardizing and exchanging shiphandling mathematical models will improve critical performance of the system. Cooperated research on model course and training assessment approaches will enhance the training standard. In addition, the rapid spread of the internet technology has shown a promising future of application of shiphandling simulators through internet. Research has been carried out on internet based integration of multiple shiphandling simulators. A multi-agent based system, including necessary hardware, has been developed. Collaborated operation of the system can be of benefit in filling the gaps of the technical and operational level and methodology between maritime universities, enhancing mutual understanding of the navigation customs and culture background among cadets and seafarers from different countries, facilitating communication and maritime English training, and extending the functions of shiphandling simulators.

  • Recently, a new theoretical and methodological approach for computational science is becoming more and more popular for analyzing and solving scientific problems in various scientific disciplines such as Computational fluid dynamics, Chemistry, Physics, Structural Dynamics, Computational Design and applied research. Computational science is a field of study concerned with constructing mathematical models and quantitative analysis techniques and using large computing resources to solve the problems which are difficult to approach in a physical experimentally. In this paper, we present R&D of EDISON open integration platform that allows anyone like professors, researchers, industrial workers, students etc to upload their advanced research result such as simulation SW to use and share based on the cyber infrastructure of supercomputer and network. EDISON platform, which consists of 3 tiers (EDISON application framework, EDISON middleware, and EDISON infra resources) provides Web portal for education and research in 5 areas (CFD, Chemistry, Physics, Structural Dynamics, Computational Design) and user service.

  • Computational science is a field of study concerned with constructing mathematical models and quantitative analysis techniques and using large computing resources to solve the problems which are difficult to approach in a physical experimentally. Recently, a new web-based simulation environment for computational science is becoming more and more popular for supporting multi-user access without restriction of space or time, however, to develop web-based simulation applications, the researchers performed their works too much difficulty. In this paper, we present automated web interface generation tool that allows applied researchers to concentrate on advanced research in their scientific disciplines such as Chemistry, Physics, Structural Dynamics.

  • The drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle which has no human pilot. Drones can be classified into military drones, commercial drones, and personal drones by usage. Also, drones can be classified from large-sized to nano-sized drone by size and autonomous, remote controlled drone by control type. Especially, military drones can be classified into low-altitude drones, medium-altitude, and high-altitude drones by altitude. Recently, the drone industry is one of the fast growing industries in the world. As drone technologies have become more advanced and cost-effective, Korean government has set its goal to become a top-level country in drone business. However, the government's strict regulation for drone operations is one of the biggest hurdles for the development of the related technologies in Korea and other countries. For example, critical problems for drone delivery can be classified into technical issues and institutional issues. Technical issues include durability, conditional awareness, grasp and release mechanisms, collision avoidance systems, drone operating system. Institutional issues include pilot and operator licensing, privacy rules, noise guidelines, security rules, education for drone police. This study analyzes the trends of the drone industry from the viewpoint of technology and regulation. Also, we define the business areas of drone utilization. Especially, the drone business types or models for public sector are proposed. Drone services or functions promoting public interests need to be aligned with the business reference model of Korean government. To define ten types of drone uses for public sector, we combine the business types of government with the future uses of drones that are proposed by futurists and business analysts. Future uses of drones can be divided into three sectors or services. First, drone services for public or military sectors include early warning systems, emergency services, news reporting, police drones, library drones, healthcare drones, travel drones. Second, drone services for commercial or industrial services include parcel delivery drones, gaming drones, sporting drones, farming and agriculture drones, ranching drones, robotic arm drones. Third, drone services for household sector include smart home drones.

  • Financial information systems play such a pivotal role in the financial institution services that are provided for a large customers on the basis of various information including the personal information. As for the personal information collected during the transactions in the financial information systems, huge efforts and investment have been made to protect previously them from being inappropriately misused or illegally used if they could be released. Unfortunately, the frequent accidents on the leakage of sensitive personal information have occurred recently not only by external service users but even by internal system users. Therefore, the aim of this study is to suggest a model of advanced two-channel authentication for internal users in order to increase the stability of financial information systems with enhanced security.

Experimental Investigation of Steam Condensation Heat Transfer in the Presence of Noncondensable Gas on a Vertical Tube (수직 튜브 외벽에서의 증기-비응축성 기체 응축 열전달 실험 연구)

  • To evaluate the heat removal capability of a condenser tube in the PCCS of an advanced nuclear power plant, a steam condensation experiment in the presence of noncondensable gas on a vertical tube is performed. The average heat transfer coefficient is measured on a vertical tube of 40 mm in O.D. and 1.0 m in length. The experiments covers the pressures of 2-4 bar, and the mass fraction of air ranges from 0.1 up to 0.7. From the experimental results, the effects of the total pressure and the concentration of air on the condensation heat transfer coefficient are investigated. The measured data are compared with the predictions by Uchida's and Tagami's correlations, and it is revealed that these models underestimate the condensation heat transfer coefficient of the steam-air mixture.
