We present three nuclear/hydrogen-related R&D activities being performed at KAIST: air-ingressed LOCA analysis code development, gas turbine analysis tool development, and hydrogen-production system analysis model development. The ICE numerical technique widely used for the safety analysis of water-reactors is successfully implemented into GAMMA, with which we solve the basic equations for continuity, momentum conservation, energy conservation of the gas mixture, and mass conservation of 6 species (He, N2, O2, CO, CO2, and H2O). GAMMA has been extensively validated using data from 14 test facilities. We developed a tool to predict the characteristics of HTGR helium turbines based on the throughflow calculation with a Newton-Raphson method that overcomes the weakness of the conventional method based on the successive iteration scheme. It is found that the current method reaches stable and quick convergence even under the off-normal condition with the same degree of accuracy. The dynamic equations for the distillation column of HI process are described with 4 material components involved in the HI process: H2O, HI, I2, H2. For the HI process we improved the Neumann model based on the NRTL (Non-Random Two-Liquid) model. The improved Neumann model predicted a total pressure with 8.6% maximum relative deviation from the data and 2.5% mean relative deviation, and liquid-liquid-separation with 9.52% maximum relative deviation from the data.
The objective of this study is to model and simulate the nonlinear lubrication performance of the sliding part between the piston and cylinder wall in a hydrostatic swash-plate-type axial piston pump. A numerical algorithm is developed that facilitates simultaneous calculation of the rotating body motion and fluid film pressure to observe the fluid film geometry and power loss. It is assumed that solid asperity contact, so-called mixed lubrication in this study, invariably occurs in the swash-plate-type axial piston pump, which produces a higher lateral moment on the pistons than other types of hydrostatic machines. Two comparative mixed lubrication models, rigid and elastic, are used to determine the reaction force and sliding friction. The rigid model does not allow any elastic deformation in the partial lubrication area. The patch shapes, reactive forces, and virtual local elastic deformation in the partial lubrication area are obtained in the elastic contact model using a simple Hertz contact theory. The calculation results show that a higher reaction force and friction loss are obtained in the rigid model, indicating that solid deformation is a significant factor on the lubrication characteristics of the reciprocating piston part.
In nuclear engineering, the occurrence of critical heat flux (CHF) is complicated for rod bundle, and it is much more difficult to predict the CHF when it is in natural circulation under motion condition. In this paper, the dryout-type CHF is investigated for the rod bundle in a natural circulation loop under rolling motion condition based on the coupled analysis of subchannel method, a one-dimensional system analysis method and a CHF mechanism model, namely the three-fluid model for annular flow. In order to consider the rolling effect of the natural circulation loop, the subchannel model is connected to the one-dimensional system code at the inlet and outlet of the rod bundle. The subchannel analysis provides the local thermal hydraulic parameters as input for the CHF mechanism model to calculate the occurrence of CHF. The rolling motion is modeled by additional motion forces in the momentum equation. First, the calculation methods of the natural circulation and CHF are validated by a published natural circulation experiment data and a CHF empirical correlation, respectively. Then, the CHF of the rod bundle in a natural circulation loop under both the stationary and rolling motion condition is predicted and analyzed. According to the calculation results, CHF under stationary condition is smaller than that under rolling motion condition. Besides, the CHF decreases with the increase of the rolling period and angular acceleration amplitude within the range of inlet subcooling and mass flux adopted in the current research. This paper can provide useful information for the prediction of CHF in natural circulation under motion condition, which is important for the nuclear reactor design improvement and safety analysis.

Current turbulence models including modified $K-{\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulence model do not predict compression effect on turbulence accurately in an internal combustion engine. The $K-{\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulence model was suggested to improve the predictability of compression effect by We et al. In this paper a numeri-cal study was performed to clarify the applicability of the $K-{\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulenc model to the calculation of the in-cylinder flow of an axisymmetric engine. THe results using $K-{\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulence model are compared to those from the modified $K-{\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulence model and experimental data. The mean veloc-ity and rms velocity profiles using $K-{\varepsilon}-{\tau}$ turbulence model showed a better agreement with an experimental data than those of modifid $K-{\varepsilon}-e$ turbulence model.
Pyro-process of solids is the way to heat solid materials under high temperature. In this processing, energy efficient use is one of the main concerns due to its high energy consumption of bulk materials. To calculate the energy use of processes, heat & mass balance in simplified 0-dimensional model was performed. Energy calculation by this simplified model can lead to confusion due to simplification. Thus, it is necessary to understand considerations of energy analysis. In this study, cement manufacturing as a very common example of pyro-processing of solids, was introduced for explaining considerations of energy analysis for energy efficient use.

We present a theoretical investigation of the inelastic atom-surface phonon scattering for a model He-Si(100) system by the classical trajectory-quantum forced oscillator(DECENT) method. Single and multi-phonon transition probabilities of normal modes are calculated for several initial beam orientations and several initial kinetic energies. In order to understand surface structure effects, the calculation has been done on both reconstructed and unreconstructed surfaces of the He/Si(100) system. The origin of mode specificity for energy transfer is discussed. The contribution of one, two, and multi-phonon events to the total energy transfer between 0 and 600 K is also given.

The alignment of propulsion shaft systems by the fair curve method has been developed over the past twenty years and in recent years its basic problems have been almost solved. At the present time, studies on introducing actual conditions are being undertaken. In a fair curve alignment, its aim is to achieve a stable shaft system which will be relatively insensitive to misalignment or the influence of external factors such as thermal variations due to the sunshine, speed change, etc. The key point of fair curve alignment is the calculations of reactions in the straight support and reaction influence numbers. The present authors have developed those calculating method by the matrix method of the three-moment theorem. The fair curve alignment is based on the analysis of propulsion shaft system which is assumed as a continous beam on multiple support points. The propeller shaft is divided into several elements. For each element, the nodal point equation is derived by the three-moment theorem. Reaction of supporting points of straight shaft and reaction influence numbers are calculated by the matrix calculation of each nodal point equation. It has been found that results of calculation for the model shaft agree well with those of experiment which had been measured by the strain gauge method. Results of calculation for the actual propulsion shafting of the steam turbine had been compared also with those of Det norske Vertas.
An analysis model on debris transport in the containment floor of pressurized water reactors is developed in which the flow field is calculated by Eulerian conservation equations of mass and momentum and the debris particles are traced by Lagrange equations of motion using the pre-determined flow field data. For the flow field calculation, two-dimensional Shallow Water Equations derived from Navier Stokes equations are solved using the Finite Volume Method, and the Harten-Lax-van Leer scheme is used for accuracy to capture the dry-to-wet interface. For the debris tracing, a simplified two-dimensional Lagrangian particle tracking model including drag force is developed. Advanced schemes to find the positions of particles over the containment floor and to determine the position of particles reflected from the solid wall are implemented. The present model is applied to calculate the transport fraction to the Hold-up Volume Tank in Advanced Power Reactors 1400. By the present model, the debris transport fraction is predicted, and the effect of particle density and particle size on transport is investigated.
The systems-level analysis of microbes with myriad of heterologous data generated by omics technologies has been applied to improve our understanding of cellular function and physiology and consequently to enhance production of various bioproducts. At the heart of this revolution resides in silico genome-scale metabolic model, In order to fully exploit the power of genome-scale model, a systematic approach employing user-friendly software is required. Metabolic flux analysis of genome-scale metabolic network is becoming widely employed to quantify the flux distribution and validate model-driven hypotheses. Here we describe the development of an upgraded MetaFluxNet which allows (1) construction of metabolic models connected to metabolic databases, (2) calculation of fluxes by metabolic flux analysis, (3) comparative flux analysis with flux-profile visualization, (4) the use of metabolic flux analysis markup language to enable models to be exchanged efficiently, and (5) the exporting of data from constraints-based flux analysis into various formats. MetaFluxNet also allows cellular physiology to be predicted and strategies for strain improvement to be developed from genome-based information on flux distributions. This integrated software environment promises to enhance our understanding on metabolic network at a whole organism level and to establish novel strategies for improving the properties of organisms for various biotechnological applications.
Critical heat flux (CHF) has traditionally been evaluated using look-up tables or empirical correlations for nuclear power plants. However, under complex moving condition, it is necessary to reconsider the CHF characteristics since the conventional CHF prediction methods would no longer be applicable. In this paper, the additional forces caused by motions have been added to the annular film dryout (AFD) mechanistic model to investigate the effect of moving condition on CHF. Moreover, a theoretical model of the natural circulation loop with additional forces is established to reflect the natural circulation characteristics of the loop system. By coupling the system loop with the AFD mechanistic model, a CHF prediction program called NACOM for natural circulation loop under moving condition is developed. The effects of three operating conditions, namely stationary, inclination and rolling, on the CHF of the loop are then analyzed. It can be clearly seen that the moving condition has an adverse effect on the CHF in the natural circulation system. For the calculation parameters in this paper, the CHF can be reduced by 25% compared with the static value, which indicates that it is important to consider the effects of moving condition to retain adequate safety margin in subsequent thermal-hydraulic designs.
