A Correlation Study of Perception to Hospice and Knowledge and Attitude to Advanced Directives in Adults in a Local Community (일 지역 성인의 호스피스 인식과 사전의료의향서에 대한 지식과 태도의 관계)

  • Purpose : This narrative research study aimed to identify the degree of correlation between hospice awareness and knowledge of and attitude toward advance directives. Methods : A survey was conducted from July 5 to July 15, 2018 with 210 adults in C city, Gyeongsangnam-do. Using the SPSS 21.0 program, the data analysis methods utilized were the independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe, and Pearson's correlation coefficients. Results : The degree of hospice awareness was measured according to the general characteristics of the subjects, which were as follows: heard about economic level, importance of religion, heard of hospice, heard about advance directives, and intention to execute advance directives. The knowledge of advance directives had significant differences by age, hospitalization experience, religion, and being the final decision maker for a family problem. The attitude toward advance directives differed significantly by marriage status and the intention to write an advance directives. The relationship between hospice awareness and knowledge and attitude toward advance directives showed a positive significant correlation (r=.47, p<001). The relationship between knowledge of and attitude toward advance directives also indicated a positive significant correlation (r=.20, p=.005). Conclusion : This study provided basic data to inform promotion of hospice awareness and an educational intervention about advance directives.

Factors Influencing Attitude Toward Advance Directive in Nursing Students (간호대학생의 사전의료의향서에 대한 태도 영향 요인)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify nursing students' knowledge and attitude toward advance directives and factors influencing the attitude. Methods: A cross-sectional survey design was used and 196 nursing students participated in the study. Data were collected from July 1 to August 30, 2018 using a structured questionnaire which included biomedical ethics, awareness of good death, knowledge and attitude toward advance directives. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 25.0 program with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation, and multiple regression. Results: The mean score of biomedical ethics, awareness of good death, knowledge and attitude toward advance directives were $2.88{\pm}0.59$, $3.18{\pm}0.48$, $7.68{\pm}31.32$, $31.00{\pm}3.09$. Factors influencing the attitude toward advance directives were awareness of good death (${\beta}=.28$, p<.001), intention of writing their advance directives (${\beta}=.19$, p=.006), the knowledge related to advance directives (${\beta}=.15$, p=.029). A total of 14% of attitude toward advance directives was explained by awareness of good death, the knowledge related to advance directives, and ntention of writing their advance directives. Conclusion: The findings of the study indicate that it is necessary to provide a systemic education program regarding advance directives for nursing students in order to provide knowledge related to advance directives and to help them establish positive attitudes toward advance directives.

The Influence of Good Death Awareness and Knowledge of Advance Directives on Attitude toward Advance Directives in Middle-Aged Adults (중년기 성인의 좋은 죽음 인식, 사전의료의향서 지식이 사전의사결정 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study examined effects of good death awareness and knowledge of advance directives on attitude toward advance directives in middle-aged adults. The participants were 152 middle-aged adults in G province and C province. Data were collected from October 4 to November 15, 2019 through self reported structured questionnaire. Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, and stepwise regression. Good death awareness correlated positively with knowledge of advance directives and attitude toward advance directives. Knowledge of advance directives was positively correlated with attitude toward advance directives. Participants' economic status, knowledge of advance directives and good death awareness explained 28.3% of variance in attitude toward advance directives among middle-aged adults. The findings indicate that middle-aged adults' economic status, knowledge of advance directives and good death awareness are important factors to be considered for the formation of desirable attitude toward advance directives.

Death Attitude, Death Anxiety and Knowledge toward Advance Directives among Nursing Students (간호대학생의 죽음태도, 죽음불안 및 사전연명의료의향서에 관한 지식)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate death attitude, death anxiety, and knowledge toward advance directives of nursing students. Method: Participants were 157 nursing undergraduates in Korea. The students responded to a self-reporting questionnaire that included demographics, Death Attitude Profile-Revised (DAP-R), Revised Death Anxiety Scale (RDAS), and knowledge toward advance directives. The data collection period was December, 9-13, 2019. Data were analyzed by descriptive test, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson's correlation coefficient with SPSS/WIN 23.0. Results: The mean scores for death attitude, death anxiety, and knowledge toward advance directives were 2.70±0.58, 2.45±0.49, and 7.94±2.04, respectively. Knowledge toward advance directives was significantly different according to age, grade, and experience of end-of-life care education. Death attitude was significantly associated with death anxiety (r=. 27, p<.001). Conclusion: Knowledge toward advance directive was relatively low compared to the findings of previous studies. Therefore, nursing colleges need to include legal and institutional aspects when writing written letters on advance directive, death attitude, and ethical approaches to death anxiety.

The Relationships between Knowledge on Advance Directive, Attitudes towards the Withdrawal of Life-sustaining Treatment and Quality of Life in Hemodialysis Patients (혈액투석 환자의 사전의료의향서 지식, 연명치료중단에 대한 태도 및 삶의 질의 관계)

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate the relationships between knowledge on advance directive, attitudes towards the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment and quality of life among hemodialysis patients. Methods: A descriptive correlational study was conducted with 103 hemodialysis patients. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire from May to September of 2016, and analysed by using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient. Results: The participants' knowledge level on advance directive was $5.47{\pm}2.08$ out of 9, the attitudes towards the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment was $3.22{\pm}0.49$ out of 5, and the quality of life was $3.35{\pm}0.92$ out of 6. The knowledge on advance directive was positively correlated with attitudes towards the withdrawal of life-sustaining treatment (r=.21, p=.037) and quality of life (r=.21, p=.036). Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the level of knowledge on advance directive is preferred to improve the quality of life of hemodialysis patients. It is needed to support and maintain ongoing education opportunities in order to improve the level of knowledge on advance directive among patients undergoing hemodialysis.

Knowledge, Confidence, and Learning Needs Regarding Advance Directives among Hospital Nurses (상급종합병원 간호사의 사전연명의료의향서에 대한 지식, 자신감 및 교육요구도)

  • Purpose : Nurses' knowledge regarding advance directives may affect their administration of and confidence towards end of life care. This study aimed to describe the relationships of knowledge, confidence, and learning needs with advance directives among hospital nurses. Method : This cross-sectional study was performed at a tertiary university hospital in Seoul between September 25 and October 14, 2017. Convenience sampling was used to recruit nurses who provided bedside care and had at least 1 year of clinical experience. We used a validated self-report questionnaire. Results : The mean score of knowledge, confidence and learning needs were $5.00{\pm}1.73$, $29.81{\pm}7.52$, and $64.54{\pm}8.48$ respectively. Hospital nurses' knowledge, confidence and learning needs were significantly different according to age, job position, educational level and perceived advance directives. Knowledge regarding advance directives was significantly associated with confidence (r = .27, p < .001) and learning needs (r = .16, p = .005). Conclusion : Knowledge regarding advance directives was relatively low compared to the findings of previous studies. Therefore, nurses should be knowledgeable and encouraged to initiate advance directives. It is necessary to develop a standardized educational program regarding advance directives based on Korean cultures.

Effects of Knowledge on Advance Directives and Nursing Professionalism in Nursing Student on Attitudes toward Advance Directives (간호대학생의 사전의료의향서에 대한 지식과 간호전문직관이 사전의료의향서에 대한 태도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study were to identify the effect of knowledge on advance directives and nursing professionalism on attitudes toward advance directives in nursing students. The data were collected from 216 nursing students in the two colleges located Jeonnam. The result of the multiple regression indicates the intention to execute advance directives, influence of religion in one's life, knowledge of advance directives, gender, nursing professionalism, and time to complete advance directives predict 22.3%(F=10.009, p=.000) of attitudes toward advance directives. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a program to establish positive attitudes toward advance directives by providing knowledge on advance directives and right nursing professionalism of nursing students.

  • The study was conducted to examine the correlations between nursing students' knowledge, attitudes to advance medical directives and hospice perception. Data were collected using questionnaires from 181 students who were in 2rd and 4th year of the nursing college in D city, from May to Jun 2019. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, pearson's corelation coefficient and stepwise multiple regression with IBM SPSS 21.0 program. The study results showed that university students in nursing scored 3.52±.69, points for knowledge of advance directives, 3.10±.36 for attitude of advance directives, 3.14±.27 for hospice perception. The knowledge for advance directives was positively correlated with Attitude (r=.38, p <.001), and toward perception for hospice (r=0.28, p <.001). Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop a systematic education program in order to improve the awareness of the Perception of Hospice, Knowledge and Attitude toward Advance Directives.

Knowledge, Experience, and Attitudes of Nurses at Long-Term Care Hospitals regarding Advance Directives

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to promote awareness of the need for advance directives (ADs) and to provide baseline data for the development of a nurse training program about ADs. Methods: Nurses at eight long-term care hospitals in Busan and South Gyeongsang Province (N=143) were recruited using the random sampling method from December 2018 to January 2019. Data were obtained using a structured self-reported questionnaire to assess their knowledge, experience, and attitudes regarding ADs. Data were analyzed in SPSS 22.0 using descriptive statistics, the t-test, analysis of variance, the Scheffé test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and stepwise multiple regression analysis. Results: The mean scores were 7.79±1.39 points for knowledge, 1.92±2.00 points for experience, and 2.80±0.24 points for attitudes regarding ADs. Knowledge and experience (r=0.32, P<0.001) had a positive correlation with knowledge and attitudes (r=0.17, P=0.39). Conclusion: According to the results, nurses generally had a high level of knowledge regarding ADs, which resulted in a positive attitude toward ADs. However, they had little experience with ADs. Therefore, nurses' must develop both direct and indirect experience with ADs using a practical training program to strengthen their clinical competency regarding ADs.

Knowledge, Knowledge… Knowledge for My Economy

  • The creation of S&T knowledge and development of S&T- based innovation has spread worldwide from traditionally advanced countries to traditionally developing countries, often under the direction of governments. Korea is an exemplar in this new locus. Korea's burst in Science and Technology during the last three decades has made Korea a substantive player in the global production of S&T knowledge and its application to business. Although Korea still trails the US and other top countries in the quality of research, it has leaped from its 1980s standing as bit player in the knowledge economy to being among the leaders in the early 21st Century. This paper shows that Korea's advance benefited from its active participation in the global market in higher education, in international research collaborations, and its close ties to the U.S. Korea's experience offers lessons for other countries who seek to advance by becoming knowledge economies. Korea proves that a developing country can gain comparative advantage in knowledge production and use; that government policy can stimulate such a development; and that openness to the world of higher education and research is the best way to move forward and overcome the middle income trap.
