  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify differences in health behavior, health-related quality of life, and depression between adult men and women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Data were obtained from 1,927 men and 2,314 women aged 19 to 64 who participated in the 7th Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey in 2020. Data were analyzed using complex sample x2 test, complex sample general linear model, and complex sample logistic regression. Results: During the pandemic, men drank more alcohol (OR=2.34, 95% CI: 1.89~2.91) and smoked more (OR=7.89, 95% CI: 6.16~10.09) than women. In addition, men were 2.45 times more exposed to second-hand smoke at the workplace (95% CI: 1.78~3.37) and 1.4 times more exposed in public places (95% CI: 1.12~1.77). The rate of muscle exercise was higher among men than women (OR=2.09, 95% CI: 1.76~2.49). No difference in health-related quality of life was observed between men and women (t=0.17, p=.78), but women had higher depression scores (t=-3.14, p=.002). Conclusion: Customized sex-specific interventions should be developed during the COVID-19 pandemic. This kind of infectious disease disaster requires plans designed to reduce alcohol intake and smoking among men and interventions aimed at increasing muscle exercise among women. Strategies should also be formulated to reduce depression among women.

  • Prevalence of an obese population has been increasing in Korea. Obesity is considered a major risk factor for chronic degenerative diseases. Specifically, prevalence of obesity is prominent for adult woman in Korea. In many weight control programs, weight change did not often show any beneficial effects for health. These facts discourage people in the program. Thus in this study, the anthropometry, blood pressure, serum biochemical indices and dietary habits were compared by percent body fat change for adult women to show the beneficial effects of the weight control program. Study subjects were 134. Measurements were done before and after the weight control program. Percent Body Fat (PBF) was measured by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Using PBF changes, subjects were grouped as I (more than 1% increase), M (${\pm}1%$ change), and D (more than 1% decrease). Data were analyzed using SPSS 12.0 program. Among the 134 participants, 13 increased their weight and 100 decreased. For PBF, 19 increased and 59 decreased. Statistical significant differences were shown for anthropometric assessments before and after for all weight, fat mass, percent body fat, waist-hip ratio and body mass index. I had increases, and D shows decreases. But the difference of D is large than M. Systolic and diastolic blood pressures decreased in all groups (p < 0.05). Fasting blood glucose decreased in all groups but were statistically significant only in D. Also triglyceride decreased in D (p < 0.05). Thus health conditions showed desirable changes in I < M < D in order. Dietary habit changes were desirable with only D. Weight, BMI and other indicators for obesity is not the real indicator for PBF. Recently it is easy to measure PBF. Thus, for weight control programs and to show benefits of the program, PBF is a good indicator for adult women in Korea.

  • This study explored in-depth emotional experiences influenced by childhood trauma of adult female survivors. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with married adult women who experienced trauma in their childhood. The collected data were analyzed using Colaizzi phenomenological research method. As a result of the study, 7 categories were derived: 'children who cannot protect themselves', 'childhood trauma,' 'insecure attachment and good child syndrome,' 'difficulties in interpersonal relationships,' 'difficulties in raising children,' 'somatization symptoms,' 'finding myself who is lost.' In addition, this study aims to understand the psychological experience of children in the family and the relationship between parents and children and the growth experience of healing them by comparing and contrasting the two cases of trauma. The foundation for healthy ego-resilience and emotional well-being has been laid through the research results on negative and maladaptive emotional experiences reflected throughout the life of adult women who suffered childhood trauma.

  • This study established a lower garment sizing system for abdominal obesity adult women aged 30-59 based on 277 females selected from the 7th Size Korean Anthropometric survey. The criteria for subjects in this study were over 25 kg/㎡ of the BMI, over 85 cm of waist, and over 0.8 waist hip ratio. The results are as follows. The lower body analysis of abdominal obesity adult women showed that average circumference items were larger than the ordinary size, and the average length items were smaller. The standard deviation was applied around the average values of waist circumference and hip circumference for the suggestion of a lower garment sizing system for abdominal obesity adult women. The interval between the designation was ±1.5 cm with a waist circumference of 100 cm and ±2.5 cm with an average hip circumference of 100 cm. We established 13 designation sections in consideration of the cover ratio and cover efficiency. The cover ratio in the 13 nominal sections was 71.5%. The segmental distribution rate presented in the results will also be useful for production planning in specific sizes that helped enable rational production.

  • Purpose. This study was to investigate the relationship between the palpebral fissure size and the exophthalmos in a population of Korean adult women subjects with normal eye status. Methods. From November 2012 to September 2013, The authors analyzed the morphological values in 73 Korean adults population. The test was performed using the Hertel exophthalmometer and verner califer. Analysis of subjects data were recorded using the spss version 20.0 a statistical program (IBM Co, Armonk, NY USA). Results. The average age of the 73 subjects (146 eyes) was (21.219+/-0.261)mm. the average value of palpebral fissure was (25.110+/-1.646)mm in width and (8.096+/-1.464)mm in height. The average value of exophthalmos was (15.002+/-1.922)mm. There was a significant relationship(P>0.05) in the average size between the width and height in palpebral fissure. Also, there was a significant relationship(P>0.05) in the average size between the palpebral fissure width and exophthalmos. On the other hand, there was a significant relationship(P>0.01) in the average size of palpebral fissure height and exophthalmos. Conclusions: In this study, these results suggested that the palpebral fissure and exophthalmos had a significant relationship in the average value of size in Korean adult women population.

  • The menarcheal age of Korean women has been rapidly decreasing for the last 50 years, and the average menarcheal age of women born in the 1990s is approaching 12.6 years. In addition, interest in early puberty has been increasing recently owing to the rapid increase in precocious puberty. Generally, out of concern for short stature and early menarche, idiopathic central precocious puberty in female adolescents is treated with gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogs. Studies to date have described the association between early menarche and psychosocial problems such as delinquency and risky sexual behavior, as well as physical health problems such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and breast cancer throughout the lifespan of women. However, the pathophysiological mechanism underlying this association has not been clarified thus far. In this article, we review and discuss the existing literature to describe the current understanding of the effects of early menarche on the physical and psychosocial health of adolescent girls and adult women.
