Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a simulation-based education course and to evaluate the results after the application for second year nursing students. Methods: This study was a non-equivalent control pre-post design. Based on the clinical situation scenarios about patients with COPD and MI, a total of two simulation-based learning modules was developed. Pretest and posttest was conducted to evaluate the difference in critical thinking disposition, problem solving, and clinical competence between two groups of 102 students for the experimental group, 2007 and 90 students for the control group, 2006. The experimental group conducted a clinical performance evaluation in the final test, on December 10, 2007. Results: In the experimental group, knowledge related to learning objectives was significantly increased and core intervention was performed almost exactly, but the same result was not observed in domains of analysis of laboratory test, and nursing education for patients. Self-evaluated clinical competence and problem solving level were significantly more improved in the experimental group than control group, but critical thinking disposition level wasn't. Conclusion: In conclusion, a simulation-based education course needs to utilize self-directed learning module like computer-based learning through web contents and MicroSim and video productions for improving nursing students' critical thinking.
Purpose: To understand the meaning of death seen by nursing students through art works. Method: The qualitative research method and the content analysis were used. The text were essays written by 42 senior nursing students about their impressions on death through art works. Result: Statements were classified into six categories and twenty six themes. The six categories include definitions of death, feelings about the death of a main character, responses to the death of the main character, feelings of significant others about the death of the main character, feelings of participants in this study, and oaths of the participants in this study. Conclusion: It is shown that participants recognize their position as nursing students, although they may not escape the fear of death, will learn to cope with death, and the dying in a suitably professional manner. In this respect, the study is considered to be helpful for the students in learning the knowledge and information which are needed for hospice nursing care more effectively.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to explore the structure and characteristics among college students' gender-role identity. Method: The study used a Q-method to measure college students' gender-role identity types. Korean Gender Role Identity Inventory(KGRII) formed the Q sample. The P sample consisted of a convenience sample of 44 college students. Q statements were written on separate cards and were given to the subjects to sort according to degree of agreement or disagreement. The Q-sorts by each subject were coded and analyzed with the Quanl PC program. Result: From data, three types were extracted. Three types showed a low correlation with each other, and accounted for 41 percent of the variance of the participants. The first type, a 'sex-role transcendence', expresses warm, humane, and kind. The second type, a 'masculinity intention type', has leadership, activity, power, and initiative. And the third type, a 'femininity intention type' pursues emotional, expressive, delicate and tactful. Conclusion: This paper classifies and subdivides three types of gender-role identity in college students. It helps understanding of gender-role identity, and further developing a sense of value and attitude related to gender identity in college students.
Purpose: This study was to examine the differences in the degree of premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea, and stress according to the gender role identity of female university students. Methods: Data were collected by self-reported questionnaires from 308 female university students. Data analysis was done with SPSS 10.1 for descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple-range test. Results: The most prevalent type of premenstrual syndrome was androgenic(33.8%), followed by undifferentiated(25.0%). There was a significant difference in dysmenorrhea according to residence. In addition, there were significant differences in premenstrual syndrome according to age, and in stress according to age and economic status. Also, there was no significant difference according to dysmenorrhea and there were significant differences in premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea according to gender role identity. Premenstrual syndrome and stress were the most prevalence in female type, but the lowest severe in masculine type. Conclusion: The study variables can be influencing factors in the gender role identity of female university students. Also, the findings can provide the basis for the development of nursing interventions to establish the gender role identity of female university students.
Purpose: This study was performed to examine predictors of allied health science students' exercise behavior using Pender's Health Promotion Model. Method: The subjects were 203 university students majoring in nursing, emergency medical service, and exercise prescription. The hypothetical model was based on the HPM(Pender, 1996). Exogenous variables of the model were exercise habit and role belief. Endogenous variables were exercise-related affect, exercise self-efficacy, exercise barrier, exercise intention, and exercise behavior. The data were analyzed by SAS PC program and LISREL 8.12 program. Result: The degree of exercise behavior was low(mean 1.86, range 1~4). The overall fit of the model to the data was acceptable. Exercise habit, exercise self-efficacy and exercise-related affect were significant predictors of exercise intention and exercise behavior. Conclusion: This study shows the necessity of the program to increase the level of exercise participation of university students majoring in allied health science. The model constructed in this study is applicable to explain exercise behavior of university students majoring in allied health science, and suggests that we should focus on exercise habit, exercise self-efficacy and exercise-related affect to increase the level of exercise behavior of this group.
Purpose: This study elicited Korean students' experiences of nursing practice at geriatric hospitals. Method: A purposive sample of 26 Korean nursing students was recruited from K College of Nursing located in Daegu, Korea. Inclusion criteria were nursing students who: 1) finished nursing practice at geriatric hospitals, 2) were oriented and communicable, and 3) understood research purpose and agreed to participate in this study. Individuals were interviewed using Q-methodology. Results: The majority of the participants had experience of living with the elderly and volunteering related to elder care. Data analysis showed that participants' experiences of nursing practices were consisted of three types: skill acquiring-oriented, relationship-oriented, and practice system-oriented. Conclusion: Nursing practices at geriatric hospitals provided opportunities of having positive attitude toward the elderly for nursing students. Nursing students' experiences were divided into at least three different types. Nursing educators need to develop curriculum for gerontological nursing practice tailoring to theses differences.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to identify the effects of aroma-foot-reflexology on premenstrual syndrome, dysmenorrhea and lower abdominal skin temperature of nursing students. Methods: This study used a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental study design. The participants were divided into two groups, a control group with 37 students and a treatment with 24 students. A 35 minute three times a week aroma-foot-reflexology was carried out for the treatment group. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 17.0 program. Results: The results showed that aroma-foot reflexology was significantly effective in reducing premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea, and raised lower abdominal skin temperature of the students. Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that aroma-foot-reflexology is an effective nursing intervention in reducing premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea and in improving lower abdominal skin temperature. It is, therefore, recommended that the aroma-foot reflexology should be a clinical practice as an effective nursing intervention to reduce premenstrual syndrome and dysmenorrhea and to improve lower abdominal skin temperature of nursing students.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify the relationship among clinical competence of diabetic diet education on standardized patients, self-efficacy, communication skill, learning satisfaction, and professional values of nursing students. Methods: The present study was a descriptive research. The participants were 144 junior nursing students in a university. The clinical competence on diabetic diet education was assessed by trained evaluators when nursing students performed diabetic diet education using the standardized patients. The students' self-efficacy, communication skill, professional values, and learning satisfaction were measured by themselves using the questionnaires. Results: The clinical competence on diabetic diet education showed positive correlations with communication skill and learning satisfaction, while the competence was not correlated to self-efficacy and professional values. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that clinical competence on diabetic diet education may be more related to communication skills and learning satisfaction than self-efficacy and professional values. Promoting communication skills and learning satisfaction using a standardized patient may increase nursing students' competence on diabetic diet education.
Purpose: This study was designed to describe the effects of a nursing simulation focused on patients with cardiac arrest. The study was designed to measure knowledge, self-confidence, critical thinking, and clinical performance ability of nursing students. Methods: A non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used. Thirty students in the experimental group received two hours of pre-learning and three hours of skill and simulation practice. Another thirty students in the experimental group received a two hour conventional lecture and three hours for skill practice. The post survey was completed by both groups. Results: Students in the experiemetal group scored significantly higher than students in control group. The critical thinking disposition was not significantly different between the two groups of students. Conclusion: The results indicate that a simulation education program is more effective in a number of areas including knowledge, self-confidence, and clinical performance. It is recommended that simulation education should be expanded to various clinical situations.
The purpose of this study is to understand the current status of high school students' exposure to pornographic materials as well as to provide basic data to develop sex education programs. This study was conducted through a self-administered questionnaire survey of 774 students of six high schools in Seoul, three boys' and three girls' respectively, from August 22 to August 25, 2000. This study shows that high school students' exposure to pornographic materials such as CD-ROMs, internet, video tapes and adult movies has become very serious. The results of this study are as follows. 1. Among the students surveyed, $23.5\%$ of them currently has opposite-sex friends, while $42.2\%$ used to have and $34.2\%$ has never had opposite-sex friends. 2. $55.3\%$ of the students pick up their sexual knowledge from their friends, followed by mass media $(47.5\%),\;school (21.1\%),\;adult\; magazines (17.1\%)\;, internet (14.1\%)$, pornography visual $materials (11.5\%),\; sexual\; books (3.6\%)$ and pornography printed $materials (2.4\%).$ 3. Regarding the frequency of sexual education taken in school, $54.2\%$ of the students answered 'often', while $37.6\%$ answered 'almost none', 'several times' $(4.4\%)$, 'never' $(2.9\%)$ and 'frequently' $(0.9\%)$, respectively. Regarding sexual education at home, $42.2\%$ answered 'almost none', followed by 'never' $(36.3\%)$, 'often' $(16.3\%)$, 'several times' $(3.3\%)$ and 'frequently' $(1.8\%)$, respectively. 4. $68.2\%$ of the students have been exposed to adult movies, followed by pornography videos $(60.1\%)$, internet chatting $(50.2\%)$ and pornography computer diskettes $(38.0\%)$. 5. The degree of exposure to pornographic materials of boy students is much higher than that of girl students. 6. It appears that there is an interrelation between the kind of schools and the degree of the students' exposure to pornographic materials. 7. The higher the students' grade is. the more they have been exposed to pornographic materials. 8. It shows that there is an interrelation between the students' academic performance and the degree of their exposure to pornographic materials. 9. There is also an interrelation between the amount of students' pocket money and the degree of their exposure to pornographic materials. 10. There is an interrelation between the degree of their adaptation to school life and the degree of their exposure to pornographic materials. 11. It appears that there is an interrelation between their parents' relations with them and the degree of the students' exposure to pornographic materials. 12. There is a significant difference in the degree of their exposure to pornographic materials in accordance with their residential area. 13. There is also a significant difference in the degree of their exposure to pornographic materials in accordance with the average income of their families. 14.
