In this study, the hybrid ion exchange fibers (HIEF) were prepared by using web spraying muthod with hot melt adhesive. Characteristics of HIEF and their adsorption properties for ammonia gas were investigated. The ion exchange capacity (IEC) of HIEF was increased with increasing the resin contents and their values were higher than those of pure resin and ion exchange fabrics. The removal efficiency for ammonia gas increased with an increase in packing density of hybrid ion exchange fabrics in the column. The adsorption breakthrough time was 270 min, which was slower than those of the resin and fibers. The maximum value of adsorption for ammonia gas was 94%. The breakthrough time was also increased with increasing the concentration and flow rate of ammonia gas. The reaction constant(k) for ammonia gas was increased with increasing the concentration and flow rate of the gas, while it was decreased an the mass was increased.
In this work, graphite nanofibers (GNFs) were prepared by ammonia and heat treatment at temperatures up to $1000^{\circ}C$ to improve its $CO_2$ adsorption capacity. The effects of the heat treatment on the textural properties and surface chemistry of the GNFs were investigated by $N_2$ adsorption isotherms, XRD, and elemental analysis. We found that the chemical properties of GNFs were significantly changed after the ammonia treatment. Mainly amine groups were formed on the GNF surfaces such as lactam groups, pyrrole and pyridines. The GNFs treated at $500^{\circ}C$ showed highest $CO_2$ adsorption capacity of 26.9 mg/g at 273 K in this system.
In this study, a pellet-type adsorbent was prepared by using the water-treatment sludge as a raw material, and its physical and chemical properties were analyzed through $N_2$-adsorption, XRD, XRF, and $NH_3$-TPD measurements. Adsorption performance for gaseous ammonia and formaldehyde was compared between the pellet-type adsorbents prepared from water-treatment sludge and the impregnated activated carbon. Although the surface area and pore volume of the pellet-type adsorbent produced from water-treatment sludge were much smaller than those of the impregnated activated carbon, the pellet-type adsorbent produced from water-treatment sludge could adsorb ammonia gas even more than that of using the impregnated activated carbon. The pellet-type adsorbent prepared from water-treatment sludge showed a superior adsorption capacity for ammonia which can be explained by chemical adsorption ascribed to the higher amount of acid sites on the pellet-type adsorbent prepared from water-treatment sludge. In the case of formaldehyde adsorption, the impregnated activated carbon was far superior to the adsorbent made from the water-treatment sludge, which can be attributed to the increased surface area of the impregnated activated carbon.
A zeolite material with a Si/Al molar ratio of 1.2 was synthesized by changing the NaOH/CFA ratio of coal fly ash (CFA) via a fusion/hydrothermal reaction in the HD thermal power plant. The change in the crystal structure of the zeolite was confirmed using XRD and SEM, and the ammonia adsorption capacities of the synthesized zeolitic materials and a commercial zeolite (Na-A zeolite) were analyzed via an ammonia temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) process. The SEM and XRD results revealed out the zeolitic materials from the coal fly ash maintained a hexagonal Linde-type crystal structure similar to that of Na-A zeolite, but the crystallinity of the synthesized zeolitic material was reduced due to impurities. The NH3 adsorption capacity, determined from the NH3-TPD analysis of was 1.122 mmol/g of the synthesized zeolitic material, which was lower than the NH3 adsorption capacity of the Na-A zeolite.
This study aims at finding out pertinent reaction conditions for treating high concentration ammonia contained in N-chemical factory wastewater with decompressed ammonia stripping method that was designed. And it also tries to investigate adsorption capability of removed ammonia to soil. The results from experiments are as follows ; 1. The removal rate of N $H_3$-N of synthetic wastewater was under 85% at pH 10 with decompressed ammonia stripping method. The reaction time in pressure 360 mmHg at pH 11 and 12 was shorter than in 460 mmHg, and the removal rate of N $H_3$-N with decompressed ammonia stripping method at 9$0^{\circ}C$ was 11~15% higher than air stripping 2. The optimum conditions for decompressed ammonia stripping with synthetic sample were shown as pH 12, temperature 9$0^{\circ}C$, internal reaction pressure 460 mmHg and reaction time 50 minutes. These conditions were applied to treat the wastewater containing organic-N 290.5mg/$\ell$, N $H_3$-N 168.9mg/$\ell$, N $O_2$-N 23.2mg/$\ell$, N $O_3$-N 252.4mg/$\ell$, T-N 735mg/$\ell$. Organic-N turned out to be removed 60%, the removal rate of N $H_3$-N IS 94%, T-N is 50%. But N $O_2$-N and N $O_3$-N were increased with 7.8% and 14.9% respectively. 3. The CO $D_{Sr}$ removal rate in decompressed ammonia stripping reaction was 42% and S $O_4$$^{2-}$ was removed 8.2%. It was turned out caused with higher pH and thermolysis. 4. In soil adsorption of ammonia desorbed from the decompressed stripping process of wastewater, the recovery rate was 76% in wet soil.
An attempt was made to synthesize an ammonia adsorbent by the photo-induced grafting of styrene (St) onto polypropylene (PP) nonwoven using benzoin ethyl ether (BEE) as a photosensitizer with urea and trimethylol propane triacrylate in methanol medium. As styrene concentration was increased, the graft yield was increased. It was also found that the graft yield increased with reaction time. The polypropylene grafted with styrene (PP-g-St) was sulfonated by chlorosulfonic acid in dichloroethane and complexed with several metal ion, such as $cO^{+2}$, $nI^{+2}$, $cU^{+2}$, $Zn^{+2}$. The amount of ammonia gas adsorbed by these sample was dependent on the degree of sulfonation, adsorption time, and ammonia gas pressure. The adsorption capacity of ammonia gas by the sulfonated PP-g-St(SPP-g-St) nonwoven with 4. 25 mmol $H^+$/g was 6.61 mmol/g. Metal ion complexed SPP-g-St nonwovens had higher adsorption capacity than SPP-g-St nonwoven and the $Co^{+2}$ complexed SPP-g-St showed 9.90 mmol $NH_3$/g, which was much higher than that of active carbon or silica gel.
The adsorption characteristics of ammonia-Cu(II) complex on activated carbon were studied. Firstly, the specific surface area of the activated carbon was measured by using the BET adsorption apparatus. Secondly, the characteristics of the removal copper(II) ion from aqueous ammonia solution by forming a complex with ammonia and then by the adsorption of the complex on the activated carbon were studied. It was found that the specific surface area increases with decreasing the mesh number of the activated carbon, and the optimum pH for the adsorption of the Cu(II) ion on she activated carbon was found to be approximately 6. It was also found that the adsorbed Cu(II)-ammonia complexes on the activated carbon in the aqueous ammonia solution have two types, depending on the concentration of the solution ; i.e. $[Cu(NH_3){_2}]^{2+}$and $[Cu(NH_3){_3}]^{2+}$ for $2.25{\times}10^{-4}(mol/{\ell})$and $2.25{\times}10^{-3}(mol/{\ell})$, respectively.
Effects of the support and amount of NiCl2 on ammonia adsorption capacity were investigated to improve the ammonia adsorption performance. NiCl2 was impregnated onto the surface of various supports under ultrasonic irradiation. The physicochemical properties and ammonia adsorption performance of NiCl2-impregnated adsorbents were investigated. Among the various supports, it was found that the adsorption capacity of ammonia was the best when NiCl2 was impregnated on activated carbon (AC) with the highest specific surface area. As a result of changing the amount of NiCl2 impregnated on AC, the NiCl2(2.0)/AC adsorbent impregnated with 2 mmol·g-1 of NiCl2 showed the highest ammonia adsorption capacity of 5.977 mmol·g-1. In addition, the adsorption capacity was found to be maintained at an almost constant level in five repeated cycle tests under the condition that low-temperature heat could be utilized. This indicates that the adsorbent has excellent regeneration ability.

Activated Rice-Hull carbon was developed to remove ammonia compounds in water matrix. Isotherm adsorption tests of ammonia were conducted using a bottle-point technique and column test. Residual ammonia after Jar-Test or passing through the column was determined by Indophenol method, and assessed the removal efficiency for ammonia of the adsorbent. As a result, the adsorption capacity for ammonia of activated racehull carbon was very larger than that of coconut shell carbon, because the rice hull carbon had the higher BET surface area of silicate. The activated racehull carbon is under the development as adsorbent to remove ammonia in drinking water and waste water.
Ammonia nitrogen is well known as a substance that causes the eutrophication with a phosphorus in the water, because it is contained in the industrial wastewater, agricultural and the stockbreeding wastewater. In addition, manganese (Mn) and arsenic (As) are included in the mine treated water, etc., and are known as a source of water pollution. Natural zeolites are used to remove ammonia nitrogen in water but it have a low adsorption capacity. In order to improve the low adsorption capacity of the natural zeolite, ion substitution was carried out with $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$ and $Mg^{2+}$. The adsorption capacity and removal rate of ammonia nitrogen ($NH_4-N$) were the highest at 0.66 mg/g and 89.8% in $Na^+$ ion exchanged zeolite. Adsorption experiments of Mn and As were performed using ion exchanged zeolites. Ion exchanged zeolite with $Mg^{2+}$ showed high adsorption capacity and removal rates of Mn and As.
