Objectives: The purpose of this study was to examine whether demographic and socio-economic characteristics, health behaviors are related overweight and obesity in Korean adolescents. Methods: Data from the 15th Korea Youth Risk Behaviors web-based Survey(KYRBWS) administered in 2019 were analyzed: 60,100 students in middle and high school participated in the survey. But except 1,555 missing value, 55,748 students were analyzed. It was conducted frequency analysis, Rao-Scott chi-square test and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: The significant influencing factors on overweight and obesity of adolescents were gender, economic status, father's educational background, alcohol experience, fastfood consumption, muscle strengthening exercise, stress perception(p<.001). The odds ratio for overweight and obesity of male adolescents compared to female adolescents were 1.19(p<.001). and The odds ratio for overweight and obesity of perceived stress adolescents compared to those who without stress were 1.13(p<.001). Conclusions: I found that adolescents' some undesirable health behaviors affect their overweight and obesity, I recommend that school health promotion programmes should be implemented in schools to form good health behaviors such as healthy eating habits, physical exercise and managing stress.
Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the recent tendency of clinical researches of obese children for finding better oriental medicine treatments. Methods : This study was focused on diagnoses, treatments, prognoses and cures of obese children based on 37 of other papers which are J Korean Oriental Med, J Korean Oriental Pediatrics, J Korean Acd Fam Med, J Korean society for the study of obesity, Korea Sport Research, J Korean Academy of Pediatric Allergy and Respiratory Disease, J Korean Society for Health Education and Promotion, Korean J Pediatric, and Korean J Oriental Physiology and Pathology. Results : The rate of obese children has been increased continuously. There are several reasons for increased rate : For example, inadequate eating habit, lack of exercise, and genetic factors such as inherited diseases, and the disorder of the endocrine system. The obesity in childhood or adolescent can cause not only the physical problems but also the mental problems. It is necessary for children to diet, change life style, exercise continuously, and being active in order to prevent child obesity and keep healthy. Obesity can be treated through therapy diet, exercise, behavior modification, drug therapy and operation. Conclusion : It is important to recognize the children obesity, and make better treatments for that in the way of oriental cure. Moreover, additional reports should be keeping up based on continuing clinical researches.
Purpose: Regarding the rapid growth of the obesity in Korea's youths, environmental factors as well as biological tendencies have been major focus of years of study. Methods: This study, as a secondary analysis research, bases its source upon the raw data from the 13th on-line survey of the Korean adolescents' health behaviors. In particular, it is a descriptive research for clarifying the relevance of the Korean youths' smart phone use with their health behaviors and obesity. Results: In logistic analysis, variables showing a significant difference are as follows: soft drinks frequency(p<.001), sweet drinks intake frequency(p<.001), fast food intake frequency(p<.001) and smoking status (p=.005). Based on the amount of time the teenagers using smart phones, there have been different results in the risk of obesity. Four to six hours a week of smart phone use (p=.002) has a 1.132 times higher risk, six to eight hours(p<.001) are 1.212 times higher, over eight hours(p=.020) are 1.132 times higher, than less than two hours'. Conclusion: This study has significance in that it has emphasized the new lifestyle, teenagers' smart phone use, as an additional important factor for the increased risk of obesity.
This study aims to assess the relationship between obesity and dental caries in adolescents. Data were used from the 6th Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2013-2015). Data analysis was performed using the SPSS Ver 22.0 program, and complex sample multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze relationship dental caries and obesity according to gender in adolescents. The subjects of this study were 1,243 adolescents aged 13 to 18 years. The relationship between obesity and dental caries in adolescents according to gender was not confirmed after adjusting for confounding variables. Therefore, obesity prevention programs and oral care programs for adolescents will be necessary.
Objectives: The present study systematically reviewed previous studies published in Korea regarding obesity status of children and adolescents in order to provide valid directions for future research and to help establish evidence-based prevention strategies. Methods: The articles were selected by searching the primary keyword 'obesity' and the secondary keywords 'children', 'young children', 'adolescents' or 'kids' on the KISS (Korean Studies Information Service System). Out of 503 articles excluding the overlap, 308 articles were selected with inclusion and exclusion criteria. Secular trends of obesity research, distribution of subjects, potential risk factors for obesity, and intervention method for obesity management were documented. The associations between obesity and dietary factors were summarized. Results: The overall number of research studies has increased since 2000 but obesity management studies have decreased in recent years. Most of the studies used a cross-sectional design. Research on preschool children were extremely limited. Intervention studies targeting males were prevalent. The most significant variables relevant to dietary habits were speed of eating, regular breakfast and snacking. The most significant food and nutrient intake factors were thiamin and iron. Intakes of cereals and animal foods were significantly higher in obese children than the counterparts. Conclusions: The present review of locally published articles on the obesity status in children and adolescents suggested the need for well-designed further studies focused on risk factors of obesity and on a range of intervention methods conducive to the development of obesity prevention and management programs.
Purpose: Adolescent obesity is a growing problem. This study examined the relationships between different types of physical activity and obesity in male and female middle and high school students. Methods: This study used the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data of 2007. The study included 282 male and female middle and high school students who completed health survey questionnaires regarding physical activity. Physical activity was measured with vigorous and moderate activity and walking. BMI was used as an obesity indicator. Analyses were done using descriptive statistics, ANOVA, and chi-square test. In addition, multiple logistic regression were conducted to investigate the relationship between physical activity and obesity when adjusting for covariates. SAS/WIN 9.1 was used. Results: Boys spent more days in vigorous and moderate physical activity than girls (p for vigorous activity: <.001, for moderate activity: <.001). There was no significant difference in walking activity between boys and girls and between middle and high school students. Only days spent in vigorous activity was significantly higher in middle school student compared with high school students (p=.013). According to the relationship between physical activity and obesity, moderate physical activity was significantly related to BMI for high school boys (p=.041). However, when adjusting for age, sex, school, parental income, daily caloric intake, physical activity was not significantly related to obesity. Conclusions: The results showed that male and female middle and high school students spent not enough days in doing low moderate and vigorous physical activity. Thus, this strengthens the need to increase physical activity level in these populations. In spite of non-significant relationship between physical activity and obesity from multivariate analysis, increasing moderate physical activity for high school boy could be effective to prevent and manage obesity, since significant difference between moderate activity and obesity in this population.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influences of sarcopenic and non-sarcopenic obesity on the components of Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) in adolescents. Methods: This study used the fifth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data from 2010 to 2011. The study included 859 adolescents aged 12 to 18 years. Descriptive statistics and simple and multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted using SAS 9.2. Results: Based on the results, adolescents with sarcopenic obesity had a higher risk of central obesity (AOR: 23.41, 95% CI: 12.76-43.97), high triglyceride (OR: 4.58, 95% CI: 2.69-7.79), low HDL-cholesterol (AOR: 2.66, 95% CI: 1.74-4.05), high blood pressure (AOR: 3.44, 95% CI: 1.37-8.68), and high fasting glucose (AOR: 2.37, 95% CI: 1.13-4.96) than their normal counterparts. Adolescents with non-sarcopenic obesity had a higher risk of central obesity (AOR: 19.75, 95% CI: 9.73-44.67), high triglyceride (OR: 3.09, 95% CI: 1.22-7.81), and low HDL-cholesterol (AOR: 2.73, 95% CI: 1.37-5.45) than normal youths, and these were not significantly related to high blood pressure and fasting glucose. Conclusion: Sarcopenic obesity was more related to the components of MetS than non-sarcopenic obesity. Since adolescents with sarcopenic obesity are a more vulnerable population, a prevention and management program for MetS and cardiovascular risk should be implemented in this population.
Objectives: The purpose of this study is to identify the associated factors with subjective oral symptoms experience of obesity adolescents. Methods: The study subjects were targeting 8,139 obesity adolescents and 55,601 non-Obesity adolescents who completed 2016 Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based survey. Dependent variables were subjective oral symptoms experiences of fracture teeth, pain, throbbing pain, periodontal pain & bleeding, mucosal disease and bad breath. Independent variables were demographic characteristics of the subjects, oral health behaviors, health behaviors and eating habits. Results: Obesity adolescents were 12.8% with 61.9% subjective oral symptoms experience. Regarding the related factors of subjective oral symptoms experience of obesity adolescents, the factors were identified to be significantly higher in high school (OR=1.72) compared to middle school, learning achievement was higher in middle (OR=1.09) and lower (OR=1.31) compared to high, economic status was higher in lower (OR=1.09) compared to high, sealant experience (OR=1.10) and scaling experiences (OR=1.12) responded no were higher compared to responded yes, smoking experiences responded yes(OR=1.08) were higher compared to responded no, sweet drink (OR=1.14) and fastfood (OR=1.13) consumption were higher in consumption compared to non-consumption and females (OR=0.46) were higher than males. Oral symptoms experience were lower that father and mother's level of education were under high school graduation (OR=0.86) compared to unknown, economic status was in case of middle (OR=0.93) compared to high, tooth brushing was lower in under 1 time (OR=0.76), 2 times (OR=0.61) compared to more than 3 times, vigorous physical activities responded no (OR=0.75) were lower, compared to yes, vegetable consumption was lower in non-consumption (OR=0.68) compared to consumption. Conclusions: Subjective oral symptoms experiences were identified higher in obesity adolescents than non-obesity adolescents. It would be useful to use the results of this study to reduce oral symptoms and necessary to develop a program system considering characteristics of obesity adolescents.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the body composition difference and obesity prevalence in grade 5 to 8 by gender. A total of 1,333 students, 707 boys and 631 girls, were recruited from one elementary and one middle school in Seoul, Korea. Anthropometric measurements including height, weight, lean body mass, and body fat were assessed. Height and weight were increased by grade, but Body Mass Index (BMI) by grade showed no significant difference among boys. Lean body mass had growth spurt between 7 and 8 grade among boys compared to gradual increase among girls. Overweight and obesity prevalence were higher among elementary schoolers than middle schoolers. Overweight (BMI for age> $85^{th}$ percentile) prevalence was about $44\%$ among $5^{th}$ grade boys compared $29\%$ among same grade girls. These results provided that there were prominent difference regarding body growth and obesity prevalence in gender and grade. Further studies for children and adolescents should be considered their body composition change.
Purpose: This investigation examined a model to predict body mass index in order to prevent later development of obesity among adolescents. The hypothesized model was developed based on the principle of Social Cognitive Theory that social influences predict perceptions of cognition as well as behavior. Method: The 5,770 adolescents, aged 14-18 who participated in this study came from 11 separate school districts in Busan and Kyungnam province of South Korea. The adolescent surveys were administered in a group setting at the participating school. Of the 5770 surveys, adolescents with more than 10 percent missing data in the entire survey were excluded. The final sample contained 4,527 cases. The adolescents were included 2,250 (49.7%) males and 2,277 (50.3%) females. Data was analyzed Pearson correlation coefficients using SPSS 12 program and structural equation model (SEM) using Maximum Likelihood estimation was employed using Amos 5.0. Results: Social support directly affects cognitive determinants. Cognitive determinants directly affect behavior determinants which directly affect BMI. Cognitive and behavioral factors mediated the relationship between social support and BMI (GFI= 0.984, CFI= 0.974, RMSEA=0.031). Conclusion: Social levels should be supportive to help adolescents have healthier behaviors. This support can be accomplished by providing frequent support to establish positive cognitive factors as the foundation of the solution to prevent overweight and obesity.
