  • This paper is concerned with a fracture strength study of composite adhesive lap joints. The tests were carried out on specimen joints manufactured hybrid stacked joints such as the polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer. The main objective of the work was to test the fracture strength using hybrid fiber composites with a polyester and bamboo natural fiber layer adjacent to the spew fillet of adhesive bonded joints and hybrid stacked joints. The results are presented using tensile-shear strength graph and finite element analysis. The failure mechanisms are discussed in order to explain that spew fillet at the end of the overlap reduces greatly the adhesive shear and effects the tensile-shear strength in hybrid stacked joints.

소독제가 개인용 트레이와 실리콘 인상재의 접착력에 미치는 영향에 대한 연구 (EFFECT OF DISINFECTION OF CUSTOM TRAY MATERIALS ON ADHESIVE PROPERTIES OF SEVERAL IMPRESSION MATERIAL SYSTEMS)

  • The effects of impression tray disinfection procedures on the bond strength of impression-material adhesive to two of types resin trays were evaluated with a tensile test. Autopolyme-rizing acrylic resin was formed into 1x1x1 cm cubes. A hook was attached to each cube with autopolymerizing acrylic resin. Perforated trays were fabricated with stops to maintain an even 3 cm of impression material over the resin block. Hook on the opposite side of the perforated tray permitted attachment of the metal plate to a mechanical testing machine. Before adhesive was applied, one third of the resin specimens were immersed in a 5% sodium hypochlorite solution : one third in a 2% glutaradehyde solution, and one third were kept in the "as fabricated" condition. Three products(Perfect ups, Exafine, and Exp-ress) of polyvynil siloxane impression material-adhesive system were evaluated. The resin-impression material-metal plate couples were attached to a mechanical testing machine and tensile forces were applied at a separation rate of 10 centimeters per second. The results were as follows; 1. Both disinfectant and adhesive had effects on bond strength values, but adhesive had more effect than disinfectant(p<0.01). However, there was no interaction between dinin-fectant and adhesive(p>0.01). 2. Mean bond strength values for the Perfect materials were about 85% less than that of the Exafine or the Express materials. However, there was no stastically significant difference between the mean bond strength values of the Exafine materials and the Express materials(p>0.05). 3. The use of disinfectants produced significant reduction in bond strength values(p<0.05). But there was no stastically significant difference between the mean bond strength values of the groups treated with disinfectants(p>0.05).

The effect of dentin desensitizers and Nd:YAG laser pre-treatment on microtensile bond strength of self-adhesive resin cement to dentin

  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study is to evaluate if pre-treatment with desensitizers have a negative effect on microtensile bond strength before cementing a restoration using recently introduced self-adhesive resin cement to dentin. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Thirty-five human molars' occlusal surfaces were ground to expose dentin; and were randomly grouped as (n=5); 1) Gluma-(Glutaraldehyde/HEMA) 2) Aqua-Prep F-(Fluoride), 3) Bisblock-(Oxalate), 4) Cervitec Plus-(Clorhexidine), 5) Smart protect-(Triclosan), 6) Nd:YAG laser, 7) No treatment (control). After applying the selected agent, RelyX U200 self-adhesive resin cement was used to bond composite resin blocks to dentin. All groups were subjected to thermocycling for 1000 cycles between $5-55^{\circ}C$. Each bonded specimen was sectioned to microbars ($6mm{\times}1mm{\times}1mm$) (n=20). Specimens were submitted to microtensile bond strength test at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. Kolmogorov-Smirnov, Levene's test, Kruskal-Wallis One-way Analysis of Variance, and Conover's nonparametric statistical analysis were used (P<.05). RESULTS. Gluma, Smart Protect and Nd:YAG laser treatments showed comparable microtensile bond strengths compared with the control group (P>.05). The microtensile bond strengths of Aqua-Prep F, and Cervitec Plus were similar to each other but significantly lower than the control group (P<.05). Bisblock showed the lowest microtensile bond strength among all groups (P<.001). Most groups showed adhesive failure. CONCLUSION. Within the limitation of this study, it is not recommended to use Aqua-prep F, Cervitec Plus and Bisblock on dentin when used with a self-adhesive resin cement due to the decrease they cause in bond strength. Beside, pre-treatment of dentin with Gluma, Smart protect, and Nd:YAG laser do not have a negative effect.

일방향 복합재료 Single Lap접합 조인트의 파손 모드 및 강도 I. 실험 (Failure Mode and Strength of Unidirectional Composite Single Lap Bonded Joints I. Experiments)

  • 본 연구에서는 몇 가지 접합 방법에 따라 일방향 복합재료 단일 겹치기 접합 조인트의 파손 과정, 모드 및 강도를 실험적으로 평가하였다 접합 방법으로는 접착제 없는 동시성형, 접착제를 사용한 동시성형 및 이차 접합의 세 가지를 고려하였다 또한 이차 접합 조인트에서 몇 가지 파라미터의 영향도 살펴보았다. 접착제 없는 동시성형 시편은 가장 우수한 조인트 강도를 나타내었다. 이차접합 조인트에서는 접착제 층의 점진적인 파손이 발생하였다. 접착제의 재료 및 접합 강도가 상대적으로 강한 필름 접착제의 동시성형 조인트는 갑작스런 층간분리 파손이 발생하였으며 이차 접합 조인트보다 더 낮은 파손 강도를 나타내었다. 이차 집합 조인트에서 층간분리 파손이 발생하지 않은 것은 접착제 층에서의 균열 진전 및 점진적 파손이 층간분리 파손을 방지한 것으로 보인다. 따라서 복합재료 접합 조인트의 파손 강도는 접착제의 재료 강도 또는 접착 성능과 항상 비례하지 않으며 이것은 복합재료가 층간 분리 파손에 약하기 때문이다.

Effect of chlorhexidine application on the bond strength of resin core to axial dentin in endodontic cavity

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of chlorhexidine (CHX) on the microtensile bonds strength (${\mu}TBS$) of resin core with two adhesive systems to dentin in endodontic cavities. Materials and Methods: Flat dentinal surfaces in 40 molar endodontic cavities were treated with self-etch adhesive system, Contax (DMG) and total-etch adhesive system, Adper Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) after the following surface treatments: (1) Priming only (Contax), (2) CHX for 15 sec + rinsing + priming (Contax), (3) Etching with priming (Adper Single Bond 2), (4) Etching + CHX for 15 sec + rinsing + priming (Adper Single Bond 2). Resin composite build-ups were made with LuxaCore (DMG) using a bulk method and polymerized for 40 sec. For each condition, half of specimens were submitted to ${\mu}TBS$ after 24 hr storage and half of them were submitted to thermocycling of 10,000 cycles between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ before testing. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and independent t-test at a significance level of 95%. Results: CHX pre-treatment did not affect the bond strength of specimens tested at the immediate testing period, regardless of dentin surface treatments. However, after 10,000 thermocycling, all groups showed reduced bond strength. The amount of reduction was greater in groups without CHX treatments than groups with CHX treatment. These characteristics were the same in both self-etch adhesive system and total-etch adhesive system. Conclusions: 2% CHX application for 15 sec proved to alleviate the decrease of bond strength of dentin bonding systems. No significant difference was shown in ${\mu}TBS$ between total-etching system and self-etching system.

Microtensile bond strength and micromorphologic analysis of surface-treated resin nanoceramics

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of different surface treatment methods on the microtensile bond strength of resin cement to resin nanoceramic (RNC). MATERIALS AND METHODS. RNC onlays (Lava Ultimate) (n=30) were treated using air abrasion with and without a universal adhesive, or HF etching followed by a universal adhesive with and without a silane coupling agent, or tribological silica coating with and without a universal adhesive, and divided into 6 groups. Onlays were luted with resin cement to dentin surfaces. A microtensile bond strength test was performed and evaluated by one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test (${\alpha}$=.05). A nanoscratch test, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy were used for micromorphologic analysis (${\alpha}$=.05). The roughness and elemental proportion were evaluated by Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test. RESULTS. Tribological silica coating showed the highest roughness, followed by air abrasion and HF etching. After HF etching, the RNC surface presented a decrease in oxygen, silicon, and zirconium ratio with increasing carbon ratio. Air abrasion with universal adhesive showed the highest bond strength followed by tribological silica coating with universal adhesive. HF etching with universal adhesive showed the lowest bond strength. CONCLUSION. An improved understanding of the effect of surface treatment of RNC could enhance the durability of resin bonding when used for indirect restorations. When using RNC for restoration, effective and systemic surface roughening methods and an appropriate adhesive are required.

DESIGN OF ADHESIVE BONDED JOINT USING ALUMINUM SANDWICH SHEET

  • Recently, weight reduction of vehicles has been of great interest, and consequently the use of composite materials in the automotive industry is increasing every year. Composite sandwich panels which consist of two skins and core materials are replacing steels in automotive floor and door. The substitution of one material for another is accompanied by change of joining method, so that adhesive bonding has been popularly used for joining method of composite materials. In the case of adhesive bonding of composite materials, there could be loss in the joint strength by delamination of two faceplates or cracking on faceplate. Thus, it is necessary to prevent loss in the joint strength by designing the joint geometry. In the present paper, adhesive bonding of aluminum sandwich sheet was tried. For understanding joint behavior, studies on stresses in the single lap joint were reviewed and failure modes of composite material were analyzed. Strength tests on the single lap joint consisting of aluminum sandwich sheet and steel were performed and variation of the joint strength with the joint configuration was shown. Based on these results, design guide of adhesive bonding in aluminum sandwich sheet was suggested.

단면형상에 따른 단일겹치기 이음의 피로 및 정적 토크 전달특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (Effect of the Cross Sectional Shapes on the Static and Fatigue Torque Transmission Capabilities of Adhesive Single Lap Joints)

  • In this paper, the effects of the adhesive thickness and adherend roughness on the static and fatigue strengths of the adhesively bonded circular single lap joints has been investigated by an experimental method. The stacking sequence effect of the composite adherend on the static and fatigue strength and the fracture patterns of the adhesive failure were also observed. Since the circular single lap joint fails catastrophically beyond the static strength of fatigue limit, the tubular polygonal adhesively bonded joints such as triangular, tetragonal, pentagonal, hexagonal as well as elliptical joints were manufactured in order to give partial mechanical characteristics to the adhesively bonded tubular joints. These joints were tested both in static and fatigue modes. From the experimental investigations, it was found that the fatigue strength of the circular adhesively bonded joints was much dependent on the arithmetical average surface roughness of the adherends and the polygonal adhesively bonded joints had better fatigue strength characteristics than the circular adhesively bonded joints.

Shear Strength of an Aluminum Alloy Bonded with a DP-460 Adhesive: Single Lap-shear Joints

  • Single lap-shear joints (SLJ) specimens with and without partial round fillets were fabricated to measure the average shear strength of adhesives. The effects of the length of the adherend on the SLJ specimens were also investigated. An epoxy adhesive was used to bond aluminum alloy. Tensile tests were performed on the adhesive bulk specimens to measure the mechanical properties. The finite element analysis (FEA) method was used to measure the adhesive stress distributions, i.e., the peel and shear stresses, on the bonded part. The experimental results revealed that the specimen consisting short length of adherend and without the partial round fillets exhibited the smallest average shear strength of adhesive among the investigated specimens. FEA revealed that the low average shear strength for the specimen with a short adherend length was caused by high stress concentrations on the adhesive at the edge of the bonded part.

  • The chloroprene adhesive for ladies' shoe-making applied by the cementing method in KS G 3116 has been evaluated.. For the quality test of adhesive for pump whole cut vamp using chloroprene adhesive, general property and adhesion strength were measured and duration for environmental exposure was tested. Also, a list of experiments for field application was prepared. In case of adhesion-strength measurement,, the KS G 3116 method of peel strength at end of toe was found to be reasonable by measurement through a whole length, toe to heel seat on feather edge.
