Comparison Study of Thermal Decomposition Characteristics of Wattle & Pine Tannin-based Adhesives

  • This study investigated the thermogravimetric analysis of two types of cured tannin-based adhesives from wattle and pine, with three hardeners of paraformaldehyde, hexamethylenetetramine and TN (tris(hydroxyl)nitromethan), at a temperature of 170℃ and a heating rate of 5, 10, 20 and 40℃/min for 10 minutes. The 5 minutes cured wattle tannin-based adhesive with each hardener at 170℃ was also tested to compare the degree of curing. It was found that thermogravimetric analysis could be used to measure the degree of curing of a thermosetting adhesive. The TG-DTG curves of all the adhesive systems were similar and showed three steps in a similar way to a phenolic resin. This means that each adhesive system is well cross-linked. However, a high thermal decomposition rate was shown at 150 to 400℃ in the case of the pine tannin sample with TN (tris(hydroxyl)nitromethan). The Flynn & Wall expression was used to evaluate the activation energy for thermal decomposition. As the level of conversion (𝛼) increased, the activation energy of each system increased. The activation energy of the wattle tannin-based adhesive with paraformaldehyde was higher than the others.

  • "Structural surface becomes an antenna." This term, CAS, indicates antenna embedding in structural surfaces. The CAS is composed of several composite laminates and Nomex honeycombs, and microstrip antenna elements are inserted between layers with designed configurations. Constituent materials are selected considering electrical contributions as well as mechanical performances. Antenna design with adhesive films are impossible because of their thin and rough distributions between honeycomb and substrate.   • Recently, many bridges become not only functionally obsolete of bridge deck due to inadequate width but also structurally deficient of substructure due to erosion. In these cases, widening is almost always more economical than complete replacement, and therefore there is a need to make available the results of research and field experience pertaining to the widening of bridge substructure. But, an experimental study for the guarantee of unification between existing and new substructure with adhesive anchor is so insufficient that the development of adhesive anchor system for the unification should be settled promptly. The purpose of the present study is to explore pull out and shear characteristics of adhesive anchor system. For this purpose, several series of concrete specimens have been tested. Major test variables were the bonded length, anchor diameter and anchor slope. The pull out strength, bond stress and shear strength of adhesive faces were measured for the specimens. The present study indicates that the pull out strength increased with more bonded length and more anchor diameter, and that the bond stress decreased with more bonded length and more anchor diameter. The pull out strength and the bond stress increases with more anchor slope and it is considered that the slope of $5^{\circ}$ was more efficient. From the shear tests, it is supposed that anchor diameters more than D19 was proper to the adhesive anchor. Finally, it is expected that both experimental data in these tests and further study including mock-up tests will contribute to the establishment of the unification between existing and new substructure with adhesive anchor.

  • The optical performance of the mirror for satellite camera is highly dependent on the adhesive properties between the mirror and its support. Therefore, in order to design a mirror with high optical performance, the mechanical properties of adhesives should be well defined. In this paper, the mechanical properties of three kinds of space adhesives are studied. Elastic moduli of the adhesives are determined by tensile tests. Stress-strain relation is obtained by using exponential curve fitting for the adhesive which shows non-linear behavior. In case of the linear behavior material, elastic modulus is calculated through linear curve fitting. For the tensile tests, several points have been selected in the operating temperature range of the adhesive. The elastic modulus of each adhesive is expressed as a function of temperature. Characteristics of the adhesives are discussed regarding their temperature sensitivity.

  • In electric motor coaches. the rolling stocks move by the adhesive effort between rail and driving wheel. Generally, the adhesive effort is defined by the function of both the weight of electric motor coach and the adhesive effort between rails and driving wheel. The characteristics of adhesive effort is strongly affected by the conditions between rails and driving wheel. When the adhesive effort decreases suddenly, the electric motor coach has slip phenomena. This paper proposes a re-adhesion control based on disturbance observer and sensor-less vector control. The numerical simulation and experimental results point out that the proposed readhesion control system has the desired driving wheel torque response for the tested bogie system of electric coach. Based on this estimated adhesive effort, the re-adhesion control is performed to obtain the maximum transfer of the tractive effort.

Effect of chlorhexidine application on the bond strength of resin core to axial dentin in endodontic cavity

  • Objectives: This study evaluated the influence of chlorhexidine (CHX) on the microtensile bonds strength (${\mu}TBS$) of resin core with two adhesive systems to dentin in endodontic cavities. Materials and Methods: Flat dentinal surfaces in 40 molar endodontic cavities were treated with self-etch adhesive system, Contax (DMG) and total-etch adhesive system, Adper Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE) after the following surface treatments: (1) Priming only (Contax), (2) CHX for 15 sec + rinsing + priming (Contax), (3) Etching with priming (Adper Single Bond 2), (4) Etching + CHX for 15 sec + rinsing + priming (Adper Single Bond 2). Resin composite build-ups were made with LuxaCore (DMG) using a bulk method and polymerized for 40 sec. For each condition, half of specimens were submitted to ${\mu}TBS$ after 24 hr storage and half of them were submitted to thermocycling of 10,000 cycles between $5^{\circ}C$ and $55^{\circ}C$ before testing. The data were analyzed using ANOVA and independent t-test at a significance level of 95%. Results: CHX pre-treatment did not affect the bond strength of specimens tested at the immediate testing period, regardless of dentin surface treatments. However, after 10,000 thermocycling, all groups showed reduced bond strength. The amount of reduction was greater in groups without CHX treatments than groups with CHX treatment. These characteristics were the same in both self-etch adhesive system and total-etch adhesive system. Conclusions: 2% CHX application for 15 sec proved to alleviate the decrease of bond strength of dentin bonding systems. No significant difference was shown in ${\mu}TBS$ between total-etching system and self-etching system.

  • Recently, composite hollow bushings have been increasingly employed mainly from the various characteristics. Composite bushings are superior to porcelain bushings in several respects, including lighter weight, better anti-pollution and anti-explosion properties, and easer manufacturing. This paper deals with the optimal thermal fitting for improved tightness characteristics of composite bushing. Two types of composite bushings were fabricated. For optimal fitting process, it is necessary using adhesive and designed internal structure of flange and FRP tube. In this study, for improved tightness characteristics of composite bushing has prominence and interface tolerance of flange and FRP tube. From FE-SEM analysis the adhesive layers were different with interface tolerance, sample 1 and 2 which have respective about $120{\mu}m$ and $50{\mu}m$.

Characteristics of Adhesive Disks in Parthenocissus tricuspidata during Attachment (착생에 따른 담쟁이덩굴 흡착근의 부착 특성)

  • Parthenocissus tricuspidata is an epiphyte that lacks a main axial stem, but develops adhesive disks along the stem for climbing support. In this study, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) were utilized to examine the brick wall surface and the adhesive disks of P. tricuspidata that attached to the surface successfully. The study was mainly focused the outermost layers of both structures before and after adhesion to find out whether there has been some structural and/or physical interactions between the two. The adhesive disks adhered firmly to the brick wall by secreting adhesive materials that help them for a tight attachment to the surface. The rough wall surface appeared facilitating better attachment of the adhesive disks by infiltrating the materials into those spaces leading to some degree of interactions at the interface. EDS analysis on the outermost layers of the adhesive disks that were separated from the substrates was also consistent with the SEM data on the interaction between the adhesive disks and the substrate surface. EDS analysis of the brick wall surface and the adhesive disks demonstrated similar elements of O, Si, Fe, Al, K, Mg, and Na in their components.

  • To clarify the one body behavior of reinforcing bar and concrete, it is important to investigate bond characteristics between two materials. Bond strength is decided by applied force and interface area between reinforcing bar and concrete. And, the resultant force of chemical adhesive force, frictional force, and mechanical interaction are to be main factors. Property of concrete influences on chemical adhesive force and frictional force; bond strength is decreased by corrosion of reinforcing bar, as the result, durability is also decreased. In this study, to confirm bond characteristics with property of concrete, w/c ratio and blending of mineral admixture were selected as the main test parameters. The results obtained from this study will be used as the basic data for bond characteristics with corrosion.
