  • In this study, the personality type of youths was divided into 4 areas: Open, Blind, Hidden and Unknown, and the four different types were analysed according to the impact on smartphone addiction. The survey was conducted on 406 middle school students in Jeonbuk province to assess the relationship between smartphone addiction of youth and the personality type. The results of this study are as follows: First, the difference of smartphone addiction in youth between genders is not large, but males were largely affected by tolerance, while females by difficulty of daily living. Second, the differences of smartphone addiction between grades found that difficulty of daily living and tolerance had a statistically significant impact. Third, the result of co-relationship between the Johari window type of mind and smartphone addiction showed that blind type and unknown type had a statistically significant positive relationship but open type had a negative impact. Finally, analysis of variables about whether a type of mind affected smartphone addiction showed that there was a relationship. The most serious type of addiction to smartphones showed in hidden type and unknown type. Therefore in developing programs to treat smartphone addiction it should seek specific measures to help these groups.

  • Background: In the literature, there have been debates as to whether smartphone use has negative effects on physical and mental health. The present study investigated the extent to which smartphone addiction impacts on musculoskeletal pain prevalence among university students. Methods: The questionnaire consisted of three sections: demographic information, the Smartphone Addiction Scale (SAS), and the modified Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. Results: A total of 249 participants were included in this cross-sectional study. The body parts that were reported with highest prevalence of musculoskeletal pain were the upper back (70.3%), neck (65.9%), and wrists/hands (68.7%). The SAS scores were correlated with duration of smartphone use on a typical day (P = 0.001), duration of owning a smartphone (P = 0.027), and musculoskeletal pain prevalence in the neck (P = 0.001), wrists/hands (P = 0.001), shoulders (P = 0.025), and upper back (P = 0.023). The SAS score was significantly associated with prevalence of musculoskeletal pain in the neck (odd ratio [OR], 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.98-1.10; P = 0.002), wrists/hands (OR, 1.07; 95% CI, 0.97-1.09; P = 0.001), and upper back (OR, 1.10; 95% CI, 0.98-1.11; P = 0.033). Conclusions: The findings indicated that the upper back, neck, and wrists/hands have a higher prevalence of musculoskeletal pain among smartphone users, particularly those with a smartphone addiction. Smartphone addiction scores were correlated with duration of smartphone use on a typical day, duration of owning smartphone, and musculoskeletal pain prevalence in the neck, wrists/hands, shoulders, and upper back.

Significant risk factors for smartphone addiction were problem focused coping style ( =-3.278, p=.031), hopeful prediction ( =.117, p=.044), circles presence ( =2.744 p=.019), motive for smartphone usage ( =-1.122 p=.003), and average daily using time ( =2.975 p=.000). These factors explained 43.6% of the variance in smartphone addiction. In conclusion, the results from this study suggest the need for the development of an intervention program for smartphone addiction, with consideration to the factors affecting smartphone addiction outlined in this study

The data were obtained from 4th waves of KCYPS(Korean Children Youth Panel Study), and 1,686 4th graders in elementary schools who have smartphone were analysed. To achieve the purpose, this study executed frequency analysis, descriptive statistic, and hierarchical multiple regression analysis through SPSS 21.0. The results of this study are as follows: First, the higher children's smartphone addiction level, the higher children's aggression goes. Second, parents' supervision, affection, neglect have moderating effects on the relationship between children's smartphone addiction and aggression which means parenting styles could reduce children's aggression despite serious smartphone addiction. Based on these results, this study suggests that the combination of preventive discipline of smartphone addiction and parental education program is needed to reduce children's aggression which is main factor of bullying. Methods: The subjects of this study were university students at D University and G University in Daejeon Metropolitan City and Gangwon-do. A questionnaire survey was conducted to the subjects who understood the purpose of this study and participated in it from March 1 to June 10, 2018, and 243 were finally analyzed except 24 questionnaires without sufficient answers. Results: As a result of multiple regression analysis with variables, which were significant in univariate analysis, as independent variables, there were gender and smartphone dependency as general characteristics affecting the degree of smartphone addiction, and family relations and future problems among stress sub-factors were selected as significant variables. Conclusion : In the case of college students, they choose the smartphone as the easiest way to relieve stress because they lack the time and space to actually release stress. Therefore, club activities or on-campus and extra-curricular activities are recommended, and it needs to seek a way to get rid of stress by solving the cause of stress through counseling.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the relationships among preschoolers' smartphone addiction tendency, problem behaviors, and parenting efficacy of the mothers of these children. Methods: A cross-sectional, descriptive study design was used with self-administered questionnaires. A total of 83 mothers of preschoolers aged 4-6 years and their preschool teachers from a kindergarten participated in the study. Results: Mean daily time spent by the preschoolers on smartphones was about 45 minutes/day. About 40% spent more than 60 minutes/day on smartphones. The majority (69.8%) used smartphones without adult supervision. The level of smartphone addiction tendency among the preschoolers was $1.52{\pm}0.45$ on a 4-point scale. Preschoolers whose mothers use smartphones for more than 60 minutes/day showed a higher level of smartphone addiction tendency than preschoolers whose mothers use smartphones for less than 60 minutes/day. Also smartphone addiction tendency among preschoolers had a positive correlation with hyperactive-distractible behavior (r=.228, p=.038) and a negative correlation with parenting efficacy of their mothers (r=-.299, p=.006). Conclusion: Our findings demonstrated that preschooler's smartphone addiction tendency is significantly associated with hyperactive-distractible behaviors of the children and low parenting efficacy among their mothers. Therefore well-designed care plans for these populations should be provided to decrease smartphone addiction tendency.
