  • The projection of climate-related range shift is critical information for conservation planning of Korean fir (Abies koreana E. H. Wilson). We first modeled the distribution of Korean fir under current climate condition using five single-model species distribution models (SDMs) and the pre-evaluation weighted ensemble method and then predicted the distributions under future climate conditions projected with HadGEM2-AO under four $CO_2$ emission scenarios, the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCP) 2.6, 4.5, 6.0 and 8.5. We also investigated the predictive uncertainty stemming from five individual algorithms and four $CO_2$ emission scenarios for better interpretation of SDM projections. Five individual algorithms were Generalized linear model (GLM), Generalized additive model (GAM), Multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), Generalized boosted model (GBM) and Random forest (RF). The results showed high variations of model performances among individual SDMs and the wide range of diverging predictions of future distributions of Korean fir in response to RCPs. The ensemble model presented the highest predictive accuracy (TSS = 0.97, AUC = 0.99) and predicted that the climate habitat suitability of Korean fir would increase under climate changes. Accordingly, the fir distribution could expand under future climate conditions. Increasing precipitation may account for increases in the distribution of Korean fir. Increasing precipitation compensates the negative effects of increasing temperature. However, the future distribution of Korean fir is also affected by other ecological processes, such as interactions with co-existing species, adaptation and dispersal limitation, and other environmental factors, such as extreme weather events and land-use changes. Therefore, we need further ecological research and to develop mechanistic and process-based distribution models for improving the predictive accuracy.

  • High data rates in long-term evolution (LTE) networks can affect the mobility of networks and their performance. The speed and motion of user equipment (UE) can compromise seamless connectivity. However, a proper handover (HO) decision can maintain quality of service (QoS) and increase system throughput. While this may lead to an increase in complexity and operational costs, self-optimization can enhance network performance by improving resource utilization and user experience and by reducing operational and capital expenditure. In this study, we propose the self-optimization of HO parameters based on fuzzy logic control (FLC) and multiple preparation (MP), which we name FuzAMP. Fuzzy logic control can be used to control self-optimized HO parameters, such as the HO margin and time-to-trigger (TTT) based on multiple criteria, viz HO ping pong (HOPP), HO failure (HOF) and UE speeds. A MP approach is adopted to overcome the hard HO (HHO) drawbacks, such as the large delay and unreliable procedures caused by the break-before-make process. The results of this study show that the proposed method significantly reduces HOF, HOPP, and packet loss ratio (PLR) at various UE speeds compared to the HHO and the enhanced weighted performance HO parameter optimization (EWPHPO) algorithms.

  • Blind equalization techniques have been used in multipoint communication on which the research on the internet has focused. In this paper, a criterion of minimizing Euclidian Distance between two PDFs for adaptive blind equalizers has been presented. In order for ED expressed with Parzen PDFs to be minimized, we propose to use a set of randomly generated desired symbols at the receiver so that the PDF of the generated symbols matches that of the transmitted symbols. From the simulation results, the proposed method has shown superior error performance even in severe channel environments in which CMA has shown severe performance degradation. This indicates that the proposed algorithm can be considered relatively insensitive to ESR variations compared to CMA. As a field of ITL, ED minimization using Parzen PDFs has shown possibilities of being successfully applied to blind equalization.

  • Objective : This study aimed to ascertain the effect of interpersonal sensitivity/resilience on depression and anxiety in firefighters whose frequency of exposure to traumatic events is high. Method : A survey was performed and data related to 75 firefighters were analyzed. Questionnaires included the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R). To assess the susceptibility or protector roles with respect to psychopathology, the Interpersonal Sensitivity Measure (IPSM) and Conner-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) were used. Results : The personality characteristic, interpersonal sensitivity (IPSM) showed a significant positive correlation with depression (BDI, r=0.557, p<0.001) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (IES-R, r=0.316 ; p<0.001). In contrast, resilience and symptom parameters (BDI, IES-R) were negatively correlated with each other, but not statistically significant. However, an adaptive factor for change, a third sub-factor of CD-RISC, had significant negative correlation with depression and anxiety symptoms (BDI, r=-0.275, p<0.005 ; IES-R, r=-0.254, p<0.005). Conclusion : The results of the present study showed that some personality traits may act as vulnerability or protective factors with respect to the psychopathologies of depression and anxiety.

  • In this paper, the Ka-band maritime satellite communication systems for mobile terminals are proposed. The design includes the link budget analysis, determination of modulation and coding schemes and the overall structure of a transmitter. To avoid the harmful effects on the existing DVB-S2 services, the proposed maritime satellite system using the same spectrum with DVB-S2 at the same time employs the very wideband spreading transmission. Additionally, omni-directional low-gain antennas should be equipped in a mobile terminal to reduce the system cost. These two considerations limit the maximum transmission rate of the proposed system. Due to the limitations, the proposed system includes 36 dB or 39 dB spreading gain depending on the modulation scheme and a link-adaptive repetition method depending on the level of rain attenuation. To support short packets with minimal performance loss, the turbo code used in 3GPP instead of LDPC(low density parity check code) is adopted. By combining them, the overall structure of low-rate maritime satellite communication system is designed.

  • In order to reduce the threat by illegal unmanned aerial vehicles, a tracking system based on sound was implemented. There are three main points to the drone acoustic tracking method. First, it scans the space through variable beam formation to find a sound source and records the sound using a microphone array. Second, it classifies it into a hidden Markov model (HMM) to find out whether the sound source exists or not, and finally, the sound source is In the case of a drone, a sound source recorded and stored as a tracking reference signal based on an adaptive beam pattern is used. The simulation was performed in both the ideal condition without background noise and interference sound and the non-ideal condition with background noise and interference sound, and evaluated the tracking performance of illegal drones. The drone tracking system designed the criteria for determining the presence or absence of a drone according to the improvement of the search distance performance according to the microphone array performance and the degree of sound pattern matching, and reflected in the design of the speech reading circuit.

  • Bacterial serine proteases, especially those from Bacillus, have been extensively studied. Intracellular serine protease 1 (Isp1) is responsible for most of the proteolytic activity in B. subtilis. To identify Isp1 substrates and study its physiological functions, a mutant of Isp1, which has lost the enzymatic activity, was constructed. Through a GST affinity chromatographic method, several Bacillus proteins that specifically interacted with S246A mutant Isp1 protein were isolated and then identified by MALDI-TOF analysis. ClpC and elongation factor Tu (EF-Tu) were among those proteins specifically bound to mutant Isp1. In addition, several proteins involved in stationary phase adaptive response (such as RNA polymerase sigma factor, spoIIIE) were also identified. These findings led us to suggest that the major function of this serine protease, whose expression is greatly increased during the stationary phase, is to mediate transition of the cell into the stationary phase in a proper and timely manner.

  • In this paper, we have analyzed the effects of co-channel, adjacent-channel, and the human shield(Body Blockage) for wideband WLAN based on the IEEE802.11n 40MHz channel bandwidth required for high speed digital signage service. Simulation results show that wideband WLAN can be operated with 78 interferers over 63m distance in co- channel, 80 interferer over 61m distance in adjacent channel. By applying the mitigation method for reducing the interference, we have confirmed that protection distance is improved to 51m using beamforming, and 40m using cognitive radio in co-channel interference. Also body blockage interference is reduced using adaptive channel bandwidth, C/I ratio, beamforming, power control mitigation methodology.

  • In this paper, we propose an AR(augmented reality) system using user's bare hand based on computer vision. It is important for registering a virtual object on the real input image to detect and track correct feature points. The AR systems with markers are stable but they can not register the virtual object on an acquired image when the marker goes out of a range of the camera. There is a tendency to give users inconvenient environment which is limited to control a virtual object. On the other hand, our system detects fingertips as fiducial features using adaptive ellipse fitting method considering the geometric characteristics of hand. It registers the virtual object stably by getting movement of fingertips with determining the shortest distance from a palm center. We verified that the accuracy of fingertip detection over 82.0% and fingertip ordering and tracking have just 1.8% and 2.0% errors for each step. We proved that this system can replace the marker system by tacking a camera projection matrix effectively in the view of stable augmentation of virtual object.

  • Climate change has impacts on not only the average temperature rise but also the intensity and frequency of extreme events such as flood and drought. It is also expected that the damages on agricultural infrastructure will be increased resulting from increased rainfall intensity and frequency caused by climate change. To strengthen the climate change adaptation capacity, it is necessary to identify the vulnerability of a given society's physical infrastructures and to develop appropriate adaptation strategies with infrastructure management because generally facilities related to human settlements are vulnerable to climate changes and establishing an adaptive public infrastructure would reduce the damages and the repair cost. Therefore, development of mitigation strategies for agricultural infrastructure against climatic hazard is very important, but there are few studies on agricultural infrastructure vulnerability assessment and adaptation strategies. The concept of vulnerability, however, is difficult to functionally define due to the fact that vulnerability itself includes many aspects (biological, socioeconomic, etc.) in various sectors. As such, much research on vulnerability has used indicators which are useful for standardization and aggregation. In this study, for the vulnerability assessment for agricultural infrastructure, 3 categories of climate exposure, sensitivity, and adaptation capacity were defined which are composed of 16 sub-categories and 49 proxy variables. Database for each proxy variables was established based on local administrative province. Future studies are required to define the weighting factor and standardization method to calculate the vulnerability indicator for agricultural infrastructure against climate change.
