  • To generate the template of a detected object and to track the overlapped object and the object covered by other objects correctly are important research problems in visual surveillance. The frame difference is not capable of generating the template of slowly moving object. To get around the drawback of the conventional frame difference, we propose a new algorithm for generating a template using adaptive 3-frame difference.

  • In this paper, the adaptive nodal generation procedure based on the estimated local and global error in the element-free Galerkin (EFG) method is proposed. To investigate the possibility of h-type adaptivity of EFG method, a simple nodal refinement scheme is used. By adding new node along the background cell that is used in numerical integration, both of the local and global errors can be controlled adaptively. These errors are estimated by calculating the difference between the values of the projected stresses and original EFG stresses. The ultimate goal of this study is to develop the reliable nodal generator based on the local and global errors that is estimated posteriori. To evaluate the performance of proposed adaptive procedure, the convergence behavior is investigated for several examples.

  • A pre-processing system for adaptive noise removal is proposed based on the principle of identifying and filtering object regions and background regions. Human perception of images depends on bright, well-focused object regions; these regions can be treated with the best filters, while simpler filters can be applied to other regions to reduce overall computational complexity. In the proposed method, bright region segmentation is performed, followed by segmentation of object and background regions. Noise in dark, background, and object regions is then removed by the median, fast bilateral, and bilateral filters, respectively. Simulations show that the proposed algorithm is much faster than and performs nearly as well as the bilateral filter (which is considered a powerful noise removal algorithm); it reduces computation time by 19.4 % while reducing PSNR by only 1.57 % relative to bilateral filtering. Thus, the proposed algorithm remarkably reduces computation while maintaining accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose a robust clutter pre-thresholding method using background adaptive Threshold Map for the clutter rejection in the complex coastal environment. The proposed algorithm is composed of the use of Threshold Map's and method of its calculation. Additionally we also suggest an automatic decision method of Thresold Map's update. Experimental results on some sets of real infrared image sequence show that the proposed method could remove clutters effectively without any loss of detection rate for the aim target and reduce processing time dramatically.

  • Improving voice quality is a major concern in telecommunications. In this paper, we propose a robust speech quality enhancement against background noise and packet loss at VoIP (Voice-over-IP) receiver. The proposed method combines network jitter estimation based on hybrid Markov chain, adaptive playout scheduling using the estimated jitter, and speech enhancement based on restoration of amplitude and phase to enhance the quality of the speech signal arriving at the VoIP receiver over IP network. The experimental results show that the proposed method removes the background noise added to the speech signal before encoding at the sender side and provides the enhanced speech quality in an unstable network environment.

  • Magneto-cardiogram(MCG) signals may be highly distorted by the environmental noise, such as power-line interference, broadband white noise, surrounding magnetic noise, and baseline wondering. Several kinds of digital filters and noise cancellation methods have been designed and realized by many researchers, but these methods gave some problems that the original signal may be distorted by digital filter due to the wideband characteristics of background noise. To eliminate noise effectively without distortion of MCG signals, we performed multi-level frequency decomposition using wavelet packets and local adaptive noise cancellation in each local frequency range. In addition to the proposed wavelet filter to eliminate these various non-stationary noise elements, the local adaptive filter using the least mean square(LMS) algorithm and the soft threshold do-noising method are introduced in this paper. The signal to noise ratio(SNR) and the reconstruction square error(RSE) are calculated to evaluate the performance of the proposed method and compared with the results of the conventional wavelet filter and adaptive filter. The experimental results show that the proposed local adaptive filtering method is better than the conventional methods.

  • In this paper, a meshfree shell adaptive procedure is developed for the applications in the sheet metal forming simulation. The meshfree shell formulation is based on the first-order shear deformable shell theory and utilizes the degenerated continuum and updated Lagrangian approach for the nonlinear analysis. For the sheet metal forming simulation, an h-type adaptivity based on the meshfree background cells is considered and a geometric error indicator is adopted. The enriched nodes in adaptivity are added to the centroids of the adaptive cells and their shape functions are computed using a first-order generalized meshfree (GMF) convex approximation. The GMF convex approximation provides a smooth and non-negative shape function that vanishes at the boundary, thus the enriched nodes have no influence outside the adapted cells and only the shape functions within the adaptive cells need to be re-computed. Based on this concept, a multi-level refinement procedure is developed which does not require the constraint equations to enforce the compatibility. With this approach the adaptive solution maintains the order of meshfree approximation with least computational cost. Two numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed method in the adaptive shell analysis.

  • Biomedical signals are ubiquitously contaminated and degraded by background noise which span nearly all frequency bandwidths. This paper proposes the MADF (multiplication free adaptive digital filter) algorithm to cancel the noise. And the convergence characteristics of the algorithm is analyzed. In the experimental results, the MADF algorithm has the advantage in which has superior to a condition of low-frequency and slow data speed. This application gives an important significance in ensuring the objectivity of clinical information and in promoting the representation and the disease diagnosis.

  • We present a design for personalisation of a chording keyboard. There are two primary design goals. Firstly, the keyboard layout should be easy to learn, and easy to use, taking into account the background and physical constraints of the user. Secondly, the keyboard layout should be readily extensible, based on the previous behaviour of the keyboard user. The design proposal accomplishes these goals, and can be simply implemented on cost-effective hardware. In addition, we present preliminary experimental results on optimising the initial keyboard layout.

  • In stochastic hyperspectral target detection algorithms, the target signal components may be included in the background characterization if targets are not rare in the image, causing target leakage. In this paper, the effect of target leakage is analysed and an improved hyperspectral target detection method is proposed by excluding the pixels which have similar reflectance spectrum with the target in the process of background characterization. Experimental results using the AISA airborne hyperspectral data and simulated data with artificial targets show that the proposed method can dramatically improve the target detection performance of matched filter and adaptive cosine estimator. More studies on the various metrics for measuring spectral similarity and adaptive method to decide the appropriate amount of exclusion are expected to increase the performance and usability of this method.
