We propose an adaptive zoom motion estimation method where a picture is divided into two areas based on the distance information with a depth camera : the one is object area and the other is background area. In the proposed method, the zoom motion is only applied to the object area except the background area. Further, the block size of motion estimation for the object area is set to smaller than that of background area. This adaptive zoom motion estimation method can be reduced at the complexity of motion estimation and can be improved at the motion estimation performance by reducing the block size of the object area in comparison with the conventional zoom motion estimation method. Based on the simulation results, the proposed method is compared with the conventional methods in terms of motion estimation accuracy and computational complexity.
The major problems of recent object tracking methods are related to the inefficient detection of moving objects due to occlusions, noisy background and inconsistent body motion. This paper presents a robust method for the detection and tracking of a moving in infrared animal videos. The tracking system is based on adaptive optical flow generation, Gaussian mixture and Kalman filtering. The adaptive Gaussian model of optical flow (GMOF) is used to extract foreground and noises are removed based on the object motion. Kalman filter enables the prediction of the object position in the presence of partial occlusions, and changes the size of the animal detected automatically along the image sequence. The presented method is evaluated in various environments of unstable background because of winds, and illuminations changes. The results show that our approach is more robust to background noises and performs better than previous methods.
An adaptive nonlinear artificial dissipation model is presented for performing aeroacoustic computations by the high-order and high-resolution numerical schemes based on the central finite differences. An effective formalism of it is devised by combining a selective background smoothing term and a well-established nonlinear shock-capturing term which is for the temporal accuracy as well as the numerical stability. A conservative form of the selective background smoothing term is presented to keep accurate phase speeds of the propagating nonlinear waves. The nonlinear shock-capturing term that has been modeled by the second-order derivative term is combined with it to improve the resolution of discontinuities and stabilize the strong nonlinear waves. It is shown that the improved artificial dissipation model with an adaptive control constant which is independent of problem types reproduces the correct profiles and speeds of nonlinear waves, suppresses numerical oscillations near discontinuity and avoids unnecessary damping on the smooth linear acoustic waves. The feasibility and performance of the adaptive nonlinear artificial dissipation model are investigated by the applications to actual computational aeroacoustics problems.
This paper proposes a color image coding algorithm based on shape-adaptive all phase biorthogonal transform (SA-APBT). This algorithm is implemented through four procedures: color space conversion, image segmentation, shape coding, and texture coding. Region-of-interest (ROI) and background area are obtained by image segmentation. Shape coding uses chain code. The texture coding of the ROI is prior to the background area. SA-APBT and uniform quantization are adopted in texture coding. Compared with the color image coding algorithm based on shape-adaptive discrete cosine transform (SA-DCT) at the same bit rates, experimental results on test color images reveal that the objective quality and subjective effects of the reconstructed images using the proposed algorithm are better, especially at low bit rates. Moreover, the complexity of the proposed algorithm is reduced because of uniform quantization.
In this paper, we propose an adaptive encoding method of fixed codebook in CELP coders and implement an adaptive fixed code exited linear prediction(AF-CELP) speech coder. AF-CELP exploits the fact that the fixed codebook contribution to speech signal is also periodic like the adaptive codebook (or pitch filter) contribution. By modeling the fixed code book with the pitch lag and the gain from the adaptive codebook, AF-CELP can be implemented at low bit rates as well as low complexity. Listening tests show that a 6.4 kbit/s AF-CELP has a comparable quality to the 8 kbit/s CS-ACELP in background noise conditions.

License plate (LP) detection is the most imperative part of an automatic LP recognition (LPR) system. Typical LPR contains two steps, namely LP detection (LPD) and character recognition. In this paper, we propose an efficient Vehicle-to-LP detection framework which combines with an adaptive GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) and a cascade of boosted classifiers to make a faster vehicle LP detector. To develop a background model by using a GMM is possible in the circumstance of a fixed camera and extracts the motions using background subtraction. Firstly, an adaptive GMM is used to find the region of interest (ROI) on which motion detectors are running to detect the vehicle area as blobs ROIs. Secondly, a cascade of boosted classifiers is executed on the blobs ROIs to detect a LP. The experimental results on our test video with the resolution of $720{\times}576$ show that the LPD rate of the proposed system is 99.14% and the average computational time is approximately 42ms.

Impulsive sound and vibration signals in gear are often associated with their faults. Thus these impulsive sound and vibration signals can be used as indicators in the diagnosis of gear fault. The early detection of impulsive signal due to gear fault prevents from complete failure in gear. However it is often difficult to make objective measurement of impulsive signals because of background noise signals. In order to ease the detection of impulsive signals embedded in background noise, we enhance the impulsive signals using adaptive signal processing.

For the detection of moving objects, background subtraction methods are widely used. An adaptive Gaussian mixture model combined with probabilistic learning is one of the most popular methods for the real-time update of the complex and dynamic background. However, probabilistic learning approach does not work well in high traffic regions. In this paper, we Propose a reliable learning method of complex and dynamic backgrounds in high traffic regions.
This paper is a study on the design of adptive filter for QRS complex detection. We propose a simple adaptive algorithm to increase capability of noise cancelation in QRS complex detection with two stage adaptive filter. At the first stage, background noise is removed and at the next stage, only spectrum of QRS complex components is passed. Two adaptive filters can afford to keep track of the changes of both noise and QRS complex. Each adaptive filter consists of prediction error filter and FIR filter The impulse response of FIR filter uses coefficients of prediction error filter. The detection rates for 105 and 108 of MIT/BIH data base were 99.3% and 97.4% respectively.
