  • We designed and fabricated a vision chip for edge detection with a $160{\times}120$ pixel array by using 0.35 ${\mu}m$ standard complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technology. The designed vision chip is based on a retinal structure with a resistive network to improve the speed of operation. To improve the quality of final edge images, we applied a saturating resistive circuit to the resistive network. The light-adaptation mechanism of the edge detection circuit was quantitatively analyzed using a simple model of the saturating resistive element. To verify improvement, we compared the simulation results of the proposed circuit to the results of previous circuits.

  • In this paper, we developed a working adaptation evaluation system using finger force measurement which interact between material and biological system. The system consists of a finger force transducer, a signal conditioner, an A/D converter, a computer, and a software system for data processing. The finger force transducer is made by a load cell and a special mechanism. The data processing software controls the A/D converter, data monitoring, and data analysis for group classification. The developed system were tested by 4 different materials in left hand and the finger forte transducer in the other hand's thumb and index finger with 16 persons. As the results of experiments, the developed system could measure the finger force quantitatively and classify the measured values into four groups.

  • The purpose of this study was to find out the differences and relationships among balanced strategy, coordinating and learning mechanism, and perceived performance of hospitals in Korea, and provide some directions to establish effective strategic management of hospital. Measure items on balanced strategy, coordinating and learning mechanism, and perceived performance were developed from previous studies. Questionnaire was sent and received through Internet site and e-mail during May, 2008. Data were collected from key informant in each institutions, and analyzed using frequency analysis, T-test, ANOVA, correlation and regression analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1. The level of strategic selection and external learning mechanism of private hospital was lower than that of medical corporation, and others corporation hospital. 2. There was little difference between hospitals in metropolitan and those in small cities. 3. Hospitals that have under 100 beds were statistically lower level in strategic selection and external learning mechanism than hospitals has over 100 beds. 4. Formal coordinating and external learning mechanism, and foundation form(medical corporation) were significantly influenced on profitability from specialized field. 5. Strategic selection and adaptation mechanism were significantly affected on total profitability. 6. Strategic selection and external learning mechanism were significantly influenced on competitive power around its local market. Hospitals that are to be competitive by specialization should have to establish mechanism for management such as balanced strategy, coordinating and learning mechanism.

  • Guaranteeing the safety of human workers around robots has become an important issue with the increasing demand for human-robot collaboration in industrial production lines. This study proposes a robot manipulator equipped with a counterbalancing mechanism that reduces the power of actuators required to drive the robot, thus keeping a human worker safer in a human-robot collaborative environment. A counterbalancing torque that exactly cancels out the gravitational torque in the proposed mechanism is generated by restoring the force of a spring in the counterbalancing mechanism. A prototype design and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Fuzzy sliding mode controller for a class of uncertain nonlinear dynamical systems is proposed and analyzed. The controller's construction and its analysis involve sliding modes. The proposed controller consists of two components. Sliding mode component is employed to eliminate the effects of disturbances, while a fuzzy model component equipped with an adaptation mechanism reduces modeling uncertainties by approximating model uncertainties. To demonstrate its performance, the proposed control algorithm is applied to an inverted pendulum. The results show that both alleviation of chattering and performance are achieved.

  • This paper presents a robust adaptive control scheme based on the Lyapunov design for robot manipulators subjected to inertial parameter uncertainties and bounded torque disturbances. The scheme is a modified version of the adaptive computed torque method which adopts a dead zone into the adaptation mechanism so as to avoid parameter drifts by disturbances. It is shown via stability analysis and computer simulations that all the signals in the overall adaptive system are bounded and tracking errors lie within a prespecified bound.

  • Adaptation in dynamic environments gains a significant advantage by combining evolution and learning. We propose an on-line, realtime evolutionary learning mechanism to determine the structure and the synaptic weights of a neural network controller for mobile robot navigations. We support our method, based on (1+1) evolutionary strategy, which produces changes during the lifetime of an individual to increase the adaptability of the individual itself, with a set of experiments on evolutionary neural controller for physical robots behaviors.

  • In order to study the mechanism for the adaptation to salt stress, we mutagenized budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae with Ethylmethane sulfonate, and isolated salt-tolerant mutants. Among the salt-tolerant mutants, two strains exhibit additional temperature sensitive phenotype. Here, we report that these two salt-tolerant mutants are specific to {TEX}$Na^{+}${/TEX} rather than general osmotic stress. These mutant strains may contain mutations in the genes involved in {TEX}$Na^{+}${/TEX} home-ostasis.

  • Salt accumulation in agricultural soils reduces the growth and productivity of crops. Although scientists have been studied the impacts of salinity on plants, the physiological mechanism of adaptation to salinity has not been well understood. Practically, salinity in irrigated soil of green and glass houses keeps increasing in Korea by the massive application of nitrogen fertilizer.(omitted)
