This study evaluated slope stability through a case study to determine the disaster risks associated with increased deforestation in structures, including schools and apartments, located in urban areas adjacent to slopes. The slope behind the ○○ High School in Gwangju, Korea, collapsed owing to heavy rain in August 2018. Historically, rainwater drained well around the slope during the rainy season. However, during the collapse, a large amount of seepage water flowed out of the slope surface and a shallow failure occurred along the saturated soil layer. To analyze the cause of the collapse, the images of the upper area of the slope, which could not be directly identified, were captured using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). A digital elevation model of the slope was constructed through image analysis, making it possible to calculate the rainfall flow direction and the area, width, and length of logging areas. The change in the instability of the slope over time owing to rainfall lasting ten days before the collapse was analyzed through numerical analysis. Imaging techniques based on the UAV images were found to be effective in analyzing ground disaster risk maps in urban areas. Furthermore, the analysis was found to predict the failure before its actual occurrence.

A method for measuring the length and slope of a temporary structure using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and 3D modeling method is proposed. The actual length and slope of the vertical member of the specimen were measured and compared with the measured values obtained by the proposed method for the specimens with and without the vertical protection net installed. Based on the result of measuring the length of the temporary structure specimen using the UAV and 3D modeling method, the measured value showed an error of 0.87% when compared to the actual length in the specimen without the vertical protection net installed. In addition, the error of the slope was 0.63°. It was thought that the proposed method could be usable for the purpose of finding parts in wrong installation state on the temporary structure and informing the manager in charge. However, in the case of the specimen with the vertical protection net, the measurement showed a 1.46% error in length and 2.77° difference in slope. Therefore, if a vertical protection net is to be installed in a temporary structure, the measurement accuracy should be improved by utilizing an image processing method, etc.
At the mudstone slope located on the roadside of the Seokri area in Donghae-myeon, Pohang, Gyeongsangbuk-do, this study was performed to analyze the effects of rainfall on the stability of slope through seepage analysis according to the precipitation type of the mudstone slope, referring to the actual case of slope failure. For this, precise geological survey, geophysical exploration and drilling survey for the slope where the failure occurred were performed and followed by analysis of detailed soil layer. For the section where failure surface located, the durability reduction of rocks was measured through slaking/swelling tests and the permeability was measured through in-situ permeability tests for each soil layer. In addition, the change of strength parameter and process of instability were analyzed by back analysis, using Talren 97 and Slope/W programs, in the slope. By applying different precipitation conditions to the geographical conditions of the slope that had actual failure records, the slope stability was analyzed by seepage analysis according to duration of rainfall and rise of groundwater level resulting from the flow of rainfall caused by development of geological structures and the slope surface condition.

Solar power generation systems require maximum power point tracking (MPPT) control to acquire maximum power using inefficient and high-cost PV modules. Most conventional MPPT algorithms are based on the slope-tracking concept. The perturb and observe (P&O) algorithm is a typical slope-tracking method. The two factors that determine the MPPT performance of P&O algorithm are the MPPT control period and the magnitude of the perturbation voltage. The MPPT controller quickly moves to the new maximum power point at insolation change when the perturbation voltage is set to large, and the error of output power will be huge in the steady state even when insolation is not changing. The dynamics of the MPPT controller can be accelerated even though the perturbation voltage is set to small when the MPPT control period is set to short. However, too short MPPT control period does not improve MPPT performance but consumes the MPPT controller resources. Therefore, analyzing the performance of the MPPT controller is necessary for actual insolation conditions in real weather environment to determine the optimum MPPT control period and the magnitude of the perturbation voltage. This study proposes an optimum MPPT control period that maximizes MPPT efficiency by measuring and analyzing actual insolation profiles in typical clear and cloudy weather in central Korea.

Intensive rainfall causes frequent slope failures at the shallow depths of slopes. Because soil layers at shallow depths of slopes usually become dense, and its permeability and soil strength vary according to depth, forensic studies and stability analyses of shallow slope failure need to consider the depth-variant soil properties. In this study, the effect of depth-variant soil properties on surface failure of slopes during rain infiltration is investigated using numerical analysis. Three different cases considering depth-variant soil properties were conducted and the results were compared. For the analysis, undisturbed soils at three different depths were sampled at actual slope failure sites and the properties including strength and permeability characteristics at each depth were obtained. Stability analysis and seepage analysis were conducted using actual rainfall records. The comparison of the results shows that analysis could lead to an erroneous conclusion according to the way of considering depth-variant soil properties. The case in which depth-variant soil properties were considered predicted similar failure times and failure shapes with the actual failure. Therefore it is recommended that the depth-variant soil properties should be considered for the analysis of shallow slope failure during rain infiltration.

In this study, the problems were analyzed that derived a different position evaluation results depending on the unit grid size that are applied to the terrain slope analysis conducted to assess the its position and environmental impacts in the prior environment reviewing process of golf course construction projects. For this purpose, the unit grid size were analyzed that can precisely reflect a actual terrain by analyzing the change of a slope percentage according to the change of unit grid size about 12 golf courses is currently in progress of construction work through the environmental consultation or ongoing consultation. And the consultation availability of environmental assessment was reverified by applying the unit grid size derived through this study about a study golf course. In the result of study, the bigger grid size for slope analysis is set, the greatly gradient is changed and the slope ratio of the higher elevation was lowly evaluated in comparison with actual terrain. The analytical result that most closely match the actual terrain was extracted in the case applied $5m{\times}5m$ of the unit grid sizes setting in this study. So, we proposed this study results to the ministry of environment and could be amended the unit grid size of $5m{\times}5m$ as standard for the analysis of slope. Also, if new grid size for site evaluation is applied to the study sites, 4 sites exceed the standard suggested the existing regulations and they are not proper as golf course site in flank of environment.

The objective of this study is to extract the shape of the slope from the images acquired using UAV and evaluate its suitability and reliability when applied to slope stability analysis. UAV is relatively inexpensive and simple, and it is possible to make terrain survey by generating point clouds. However, the image acquired from UAV can not be directly photographed by the forest canopy due to the influence of trees, resulting in severe distortion of the terrain. In this study, therefore, the effects of forest canopy were verified and the slope stability analysis was performed. Images acquired in winter and summer were used, because summer images are heavily influenced by the forest canopy and winter images are not. As a result of the study, the winter image is suitable for the extraction of slope shape, but severe terrain distortion occurs in the summer image. Therefore, slope stability analysis using slope shape extracted from summer image is impossible, so it should be modified for slope stability analysis. The modified slope did not completely eliminate the distortion of the terrain, but it could express the approximate shape of the slope. As a result of the slope stability analysis, the location and shape of the failure surface are the same, and the error of the safety factor is less than 0.2, which is close to the actual slope.
A forecast of slope behavior during catastrophic events, such as earthquakes is crucial to recognize the risk of slope failure. This paper endeavors to eliminate the significant supposition of predefined slip surfaces in the slope stability analysis, which questions the relevance of simple conventional methods under seismic conditions. To overcome such limitations, a methodology dependent on the slip line hypothesis, which permits an automatic generation of slip surfaces, is embraced to trace the extreme slope face under static and seismic conditions. The effect of earthquakes is considered using the pseudo-static approach. The current outcomes developed from a parametric study endorse a non-linear slope surface as the extreme profile, which is in accordance with the geomorphological aspect of slopes. The proposed methodology is compared with the finite element limit analysis to ensure credibility. Through the design charts obtained from the current investigation, the stability of slopes can be assessed under seismic conditions. It can be observed that the extreme slope profile demands a flat configuration to endure the condition of the limiting equilibrium at a higher level of seismicity. However, a concurrent enhancement in the shear strength of the slope medium suppresses this tendency by offering greater resistance to the seismic inertial forces induced in the medium. Unlike the traditional linear slopes, the extreme slope profiles mostly exhibit a steeper layout over a significant part of the slope height, thus ensuring a more optimized solution to the slope stability problem. Further, the susceptibility of the Longnan slope failure in the Huining-Wudu seismic belt is predicted using the current plasticity approach, which is found to be in close agreement with a case study reported in the literature. Finally, the concept of equivalent single or multi-tiered planar slopes is explored through an example problem, which exhibits the appropriateness of the proposed non-linear slope geometry under actual field conditions.

This study conducted an evaluation of the extent of debris flow damage using SINMAP, which is slope stability analysis software based on the infinite slope stability method, and FLO-2D, a hydraulic debris flow analysis program. Mt. Majeok located in Chuncheon city in the Gangwon province was selected as the study area to compare the study results with an actual 2011 case. The stability of the slope was evaluated using a DEM of $1{\times}1m$ resolution based on the LiDAR survey method, and the initiation points of the debris flow were estimated by analyzing the overlaps with the drainage network, based on watershed analysis. In addition, the study used measured data from the actual case in the simulation instead of existing empirical equations to obtain simulation results with high reliability. The simulation results for the impact of the debris flow showed a 2.2-29.6% difference from the measured data. The results suggest that the extent of damage can be effectively estimated if the parameter setting for the models and the debris flow initiation point estimation are based on measured data. It is expected that the evaluation method of this study can be used in the future as a useful hazard mapping technique among GIS-based risk mapping techniques.
